Karlach's scene after you beat Gortash. Man, that was incredible acting. I don't know what awards she's eligible for but she needs to be nominated at least. ❤

@@jgg75 There was a full squad of onion chopping ninjas in my room during this scene 🤣 The scenes with Karlach were by far my most favourite in the game - absolutely fantastic work by the whole team and some of the best voice acting ever
It absolutely broke me. And it’s funny because my other favourite Karlach moment is almost the complete opposite in that it’s just after Elminster’s visit at the start of act II- when my tears are mostly from frustration and anger at this solution that’s been offered as if it’s completely reasonable and Gale’s passive acceptance of it. That Sam, over the course of a single game, could both save me and break me really shows what a true masterclass actor she is.
And her voice is the exact same...Devora's natural voice when she speaks does NOT sound like Lae'zel at all, so I fully expected Samantha's normal voice to sound different as well, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out otherwise 🙌😃

I love how straightforward and genuine Samantha is. I can see where she found some of the threads she needed to give Karlach a real voice. Thanks, Dan! Great questions!
The performance of Karlach is some of the best acting I've ever seen in a game - god, even across all media. There was a late game moment that absolutely broke me from its sheer honesty, like an open wound.
Karlach is such a great character - she's been screwed with so badly, and at the same time is just so good natured and excitable. "Ohhh, a circus! Can we go?" absolutely cracked me up.
Pulled up this video just to leave a comment for Samantha Beart. I wanted to say that there comes a point in the story where Karlac has to contend with getting what she wanted and it's surprising, for her, result. This scene is the best written and most powerfully delivered in the entire game for me. You made me feel that inner struggle with a literal pang in my chest. Excellently written by the writers and convincingly, powerfully delivered by you. If there were such a thing as an Emmy or BAFTA category for videogames, you would be a cinch to win. Performances like yours are going to see a future where such a category exists. Bravo!
Karlach is such a sweetheart and has not left my side since we first met, the lines she has is one thing, the way she delivers is another, but just the sheer joy she is to be around, definitely the most iconic character in BG3 and they are all amazing! I hope we get an expansion literally focused on our companions because this game could be twice as big and I would still find it difficult to say goodbye.
This was a very special interview, with a very special actress, playing one of the most special roles in video game history. Thank you. I will never forget every precious moment I had the privilege to spend with Karlach. ❤
Ah man... Karlach was a real surprise for me as I progressed thru the game. Definitely my favorite companion for her boisterousness, earnestness, and genuinely hilarious lines.
It takes REAL TALENT to come off as such a strong character in voice acting. It's VERY difficult to elicit certain emotions from your acting without being able to convey anything save the sound of your voice. But I for one, am quite smittin' with Karly. Voice acting, character design, story progression, motivations, reactions, backstory, all of it. So hats off to you Samantha. You killed it darlin'!!!!!!
Have to say, the voice acting in BG3 is superlative and really makes the game as immersive as it is. All the voice actors should be so proud of their work.
'The Scene' - was done so well you could really feel the emotion pouring out in the performance, I love it when games are able to make you feel the emotions of the characters. They're just as worthy of dramatic praise as film and tv. You can definitely see part of Samantha in Karlach too.
I really really hope Samantha follows through on that idea to do a playthrough as Karlach ❤ What a great idea! That would draw a big audience for sure.
One thing I think isn't getting enough mainstream talk when it comes to Karlach is just how ADHD-coded she is. As a very ADHD person it was IMMEDIATELY recognizable and made her so much more lovable. It, intentionally or not, really comes out in Sam's performance and I think a lot of the comments about Karlach being "childish" or "regressing" are more extensions of her unmasking her ADHD and fully expressing how we percieve the world. Anyways, Sam you did an amazing job bringing out such humanity in Karlach and the ADHD community loves you for it ❤
Just a brilliant character, I was ready to "murder the demon" when I came across her, and instantly fell in love with the clever writing and great accent. She's easily my favorite in the game
she is the coolest most awsome caracter in the whole game. i like shadowheart aswell but karlach is the most sweetest and coolest caracter in the game. wont play a single gamethrough without her.
Man, voice actors theese days are so good at making virtual characters so believable & likeable, Samantha did an outstanding job with Karlach, the way she delivers the lines, it's impressive as it always sounds right! Thank you for the interview
Karlach is by far my favorite character in the game! Every single interaction made me smile so so much and i love the dichotomy of her backstory! Everything about the character is amazing, and just made the game for me
I am so glad to finally see the voice behind Karlach. Here's the thing... when I first met Karlach I didn't care much for her; she just had a different vibe that clashed with my preconceived notions of what my party would/should be. But as the journey went on (and on, and on, and on, and on) for 360+ hours, she became my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE character. I cannot imagine having experienced BG3 without my beloved Karlach, she knew how to get the adrenaline flowing before battle. And who doesn't love her "heyyyyy-o!" when switching to her? THANK YOU Samantha, you nailed it!
This video really gives depth on a whole other level to the character. I truly appreciate how much careful thought, love and personality went into her performance voicing Karlach. Thank you! ❤
"Voice of the oppressor", so bloody well said. Brilliant interview. I had a cpc 464 myself. I think late 80's/ early 90's. I used to get them from my cousins when they got new ones. Hand me downs were a great way to start.
Karlach is a breath of fresh air. She's so open and accessible. I love her character the most. Her honesty and general goodness, despite the tragic background, is deeply touching
Happy 39th Samantha! (nothing weird, just googled it due to talking about old computers and today is sep 22). Karlach is probably my favourite character in BG3 and I think that your voice acting is a major part of it!
Fantastic interview! I recently finished my first playthrough, and that scene that Samantha's talking about... Her performance shook me to my core - you could not only hear but *feel* Karlach/Samantha's emotion, and it was truly incredible. I was close to crying myself watching that scene!
Karlach is honestly one of the most charming characters I've ever met in a game. Sweet, silly, brave and vulnerable--she's such a brilliant soul, and Samantha just brought her to life--hearing "Karlach's" laugh from the real person is just such a trip. Thanks for doing such a wonderful job, Samantha!
Very chill and insightful interview. The British gaming VO industry seems to have really been taking off in recent years and its really dope to see actors get excited and interested in their roles.
There are 2 moments in BG3 that made me cry, the first was that dame, punching the floor with the music, you know what I mean? the angel lady? (trying to be spoiler free) and the second was the end with the couple of mates who decide to stay in a certain place and light up a certain smoke. Karlach made me cry right there and right then. I had to literally clean dried tears off the lenses of my glasses.
Really amazed when Samantha talked about how late she came onto the project. Her performance is incredible, Karlach became my bestie almost immediately and her character arc really helped carry the whole playthrough for me. The emotional beats she has created some amazing moments of just pure friendship that a lot of RPGs don't manage. And while much is made of the romances, I found the buddy dynamic that developed was much more impactful to the experience.
I completely agree. Felt this with Astarion my first playthrough. Made his character much more beloved to me for me to genuinely win him over through friendship than anything else.
The acting, animations, texts and expressions for Karalch were the highlight of the game for me. It is insanely good. I was so invested in her story. just crazy....
Thank you for bringing one of the best characters of the last decade to life with your amazing voice acting. edit: The breakdown after the revenge had me in tears.
"Ezio Auditore da Firenze", you have to intone it like you're ordering layered Pizza while gesticulating wildly. "She's been tadpoled" that should be the stock phrase for getting busted down to level 1, even as an NPC with previous heroic exploits. PS Karlach - most favourite companion out of the lot. Most compelling back story.
The other thing about that emotional scene. Karlach was in a position where she wasn't just beating the person to death, getting some sort of cathartic release for revenge. But she was seeing the dead body. Dead. Over. You can't punish them anymore. He benefitted from everything up to that very point. There was no real balance of justice, her life was still ruined and destined to be ruined still. She always felt revenge would be a cure, perhaps the fantasy itself keeping her focused through a tormented life, but even the fantasy had now been taken from her. Her attitude was the one rebellious thing that Karlach had to rebel against the powers, the many power, that had always been outside of her control. Again, very well done Samantha.
31:52 I love this attention to details. Bards have some spells with more verbal elaborate components than other classes. Notoriously Vicious Mockery. I really look forward to someday discover the unique insult repertoire of each of the companions.
It's so wonderful to see someone who's worked so hard to be successful finally getting her due. Especially in such a tumultuous time in the entertainment industry. Way to go Samantha!
I made Karlach a BardBarian in my second playthrough, it's so fun to hear the VA think of that combo as well! What a great interview, it's so cool learning more about the VAs and their different perspectives on acting
She really brought Karlach to life. What a cracking character...shes also just as cool and funny in real life too. I hope to see her in many more games into the future :)
Karlach is the Minsc of BG3. Even though Minsc is here, she really is this game's equivalent to Minsc. You just like having a party member like that around to lighten up the mood and ground you.
All day I sit at work and think about going home and playing Bg3. Kaelach is no small part of that. Thank you both for this interview. Adding that much more flavor to the game!
Love her as Karlach AND Thomasina, Hobbs Barrow was such a great game. Watched the whole thing on Johnny Chiodini's YT channel ( whom Samantha is friends with)
I was initially going to romance Shadowheart, then I met Karlach and her voice acting made me fall in love with her. Shadowheart will have to wait for a second playthrough lol. That isn't to say that Shadowheart isnt voice acted well, she is. Karlach is just such a sweet bean I had no choice.
She, Karlach, made me cry at the end. I was crush. God, every crew member did an amazing job, but Karlach did steal my tears. She can happily keep them tho.
By the time I'd watched this whole interview, I realised my face was aching from smiling constantly. Samantha is such an engaging and delightful person!
I played EA, and was 100% going to romance Astarion during first play through, but then I met Karlach, and was like: OMG im in luv, f yeah we’re doin tis
Karlach and her VA are for me on par with Elizabeth from Bioshock and Snake from the MGS games. Sometimes there is this very special video game character spoken by that very special person and you instantly know: 'i've just witnessed video game history'
Karlach, the seduction roll on the door failed. You'll just have to knock me out, stick my slumbering body in a crate, set fire to the crate and then yeet it through the door. Karlach: Fuck yes
Im only 30 hours into the game and already Karlach to me is one of the best videogame characters I've ever had the pelasure of playing. I dont say that lightly either im pushing 50 years old have been playing videogames since iI could hold a controller. Congrat to you for being attached and givng life to that character. I love it and am so happy for you and the team!

I’m convinced that the scene Samantha is talking about at 1:17:45 is the entire scene with Harleep. It has to be.
I adore Karlach, like she is just a delight and she's so funny and sweet. Also beautifully acted! I love her story, and her evolution.
She is just as nice as Karlach is in the game! She did an amazing job and and I hope we get to hear more from her in the future
Karlach is my favorite character. She's a gem, and she made my heart melt. Kudos to Samantha Béart for an astounding performance.
"I'm curious."
If anyone tries to make a drinking game on that line, they'll die.
Beart is super unique and what she has done is incredible.
Her voice is so like Karlach... Wait, she IS Karlach - me after a little while thinking with chaos in my brain
You know a game is legendary when we love seeing videos of its voices and creators
Last character to be written in BG3? Saved the best for last honestly.
25:48, throwing shade on one of my favorite series, and yet its too true. love it
I absolutely love Karlach! Great writing and voice acting!!
Love her as Karlach AND Thomasina, Hobbs Barrow was such a great game. Watched the whole thing on Johnny Chiodini's YT channel ( whom Samantha is friends with)
I love Karlach and Sam so much. And the fact she's a gamer herself :)))
I went into playing the game and Romance Lae'zel but changed my mind as soon as I met Karlach. 😂
She, Karlach, made me cry at the end. I was crush. God, every crew member did an amazing job, but Karlach did steal my tears. She can happily keep them tho.
Now I have to do another playthrough just to make Karlach a bard.
By the time I'd watched this whole interview, I realised my face was aching from smiling constantly.
Samantha is such an engaging and delightful person!
Your interviews are SO good! They feel laid back and your questions are exactly what we wanna hear.
Karlach is one of the best characters of all time. Great work! And ty so much.
I played EA, and was 100% going to romance Astarion during first play through, but then I met Karlach, and was like: OMG im in luv, f yeah we’re doin tis
When I first saw Karlach, I was like OMG.... That is a big beautiful woman. And I actually started considering romancing her first before Astarion.
Only got through act 1 so far, but I am LOVING Karlach's banter lines. "Sneaky sneaky! YOINK!" etc. have me rolling every time I hear them.
Amazing performance. I can't recall wanting a character to like me the way I did when I met Karlach.
I love her. Made me tear up. Phenomenal performance
