I played BG2 *so many* times back in the day that a lot of the character voices are eternally seared into my mind. When I first heard Jaheira in 3, I was convinced it was her original voice actor, and was rather shocked when I found out it wasn't. Tracy absolutely nailed that role, amazing work. EDIT: And now that I finished the whole interview, I also have to say: What an absolutely delightful and charming lady she is.
She did such an incredible job capturing the essence of Jaheira, and yet showing the changes in the many years in between. As someone who beat the original games more times than I can count, I was absolutely delighted by her performance!
I started playing BG3 a few weeks ago, and stumbled upon these interviews with Shadowheart, Astarion and Karlach etc. This has to be the most enjoyable so far. Tracy is right: we discover Jaheira quite late in the game. And what a reward! Her performance was amazing. Amazing for the high fidelity to the heritage character of BG1 and BG2. But most of all, what was brought to this character that matured is so true. The mother/daughter relationship, the stormy relationship to Minsc, the souvenir of Khalid: so well written, so emotionally delivered. Gotta love Tracy's Role in Bringing Jaheira to Life! Knowing that she has a gaelic accent mixed with a touch of slavic made for a ton of personality for the character. She's definitely one of my favorite characters to pick up into the party! I'm glad she said my favorite line in this interview LMAO
I did hope Jaheira would be played by her original voice actor since I played both BG1 & 2. However, Tracy Wiles is amazing, really captured the essence of Jaheira. When I watched her in the trailer for the 1st time, and now encountering her in the game, I never for a moment thought, hmm, this Jaheira sounds different... I hope the original Jaheira voice actor is well, but I'm also happy that Tracy has taken up the baton wonderfully.

So I battled my way to Ketheric with her tagging along, only for him to immediately one-shot her with a divine smite crit on his first turn. So glad I reloaded my save and kept her alive in hindsight, as in that moment I just thought "Oh, she is a really interesting NPC and I want her to have a nice happy life after I leave the area."
Meeting Jaheira was the most memorable moment in the game for me havning spend so much of my childhood with her and Khalid. I kind of rushed act 2 just to find her cause i knew she was going to be there. The voice sounds just like the original and is amazing. Sheâs been in my party the whole act 3. I just cant bench her.

Jaheira became one of my favorite characters by the end. The fact that you can call her old to her face and she approves is the type of banter I love with a close friend. Also she and Minsc really made Act 3 a lot better for me. Bringing them to lots of parts of the city has some of the best commentary in the game imo!
I love the character of Jaheira - meeting her and getting to know her in the game was one of my favorite parts of my playthrough! I haven't played the previous BG games (yet), but Tracy's performance as Jaheira honestly made me want to immerse myself in the lore of the previous stories as well! Now I want to learn everything I can about Jaheira - and btw that line where she's talking about losing her husband had me so emotional! Amazing work!
All companions in BG3 are amazing thanks to the work their voice actors have done to give them life but I especially LOVE Jaheira's accent. So thank you Tracy Wiles for making Jaheira such a special and lovable character.
I played Baldur's Gate back in 1998. I still have the CD's. Jaheira was a dual-class druid fighter and she was indispensable as a healer and as a tank, with ankheg armor and a ring of protection. In the sequel she was just as dependable. It was always cool to do the quests related to the Harpers. I still have those CD's too, not to mention 786 total hours in the Enhanced Editions on Steam. Now here we are, 20 years later, and she's back. I was as excited to see her again as Karlach was to meet her. She didn't disappoint. ððĨ To answer the question at about 36 minutes... Save-scumming dates back to early rogue-like games that are basically iron-man challenges the whole way through. No reloads. Save-scumming was making a backup of your data so if something bad happened you could undo it. It was definitely cheating. The present day interpretation is saving your game, trying something, then immediately reloading if you weren't successful. There are varying degrees like saving when you know there's going to be a big fight, so you can complete it without any of your party dying, all the way to saving before you pick the lock on a door, so you don't waste any of your lock picks.
Of all the bring back characters from the old games, I definitely feel like Tracy's rendition of Jaheira was the best. She did such an amazing job capturing the original character!
I never thought I'd like Jaheira this much. When I read that letter, it felt like it was summer 1999, when I first found Khalid and Jaheira in Friendly Arms Inn. She stuck with me through BG1 and BG2... I'm such a pack rat, but I did not open that bookcase and I never will. Everything about her in BG3 is written and performed wonderfully. Thank you Tracy

I fucking love the accent she gives to jaheira in that game. Like, genuinely, I want to hear it all the time. It's like that kind of accent you say "where tf this comes from?" and you feel like you've heard it before, somewhere, but in fact you didn't. Or at least I didn't. My heart jumped out of my chest when LEGACY Jaheira and Minsc came to the party. Just a little pissed the developers made Jaheira a level 2 character and why she kept dying at the towers. I was furious. But got around to save her.

She did an excellent job. Honestly speaking, I thought her and Raphael were the best-acted/depicted characters in the entire game, and their actors aren't getting nearly enough credit for their performances.
Another fantastic interview, watching them all as they come out has been a joy. My only gripe with Jaheira is you get her too late, though once I do she doesn't leave my team. She's such a fun character to have around and her soldier-style camaraderie works well with my Tav since he never misses a chance to call her old, but equally she's very genuine and wears her heart on her sleeve a lot more than you'd expect, like when you find a certain old friend, when you go to her house, and when she tells you about her backup plan she had prepared if last light inn went bad.
My gripe is gameplay mechanic wise. Jaheira is one of the characters you meet the earliest in the first Baldur's Gate. And it is very likely that she stays in your party until the very end of Throne of Bhaal. By that time she is Level 20. Also she is a multiclass character from the start. A fighter/druid. So why is she only a level 8 Druid when you meet her in this game? I know the level cap for playable characters is Level 12 (the highest enemy I met was the Dragon at Level 17). So to reflect her experience she should be Level 12 from the start. Or do Levels degrade with old age considering that she is probably something around 125? Which is more or less the end of the road for half-elves. ;) Well at least you can give her her old multiclass back, which I did, so she is now a level 5 Druid and a Level 3 Fighter.
Bairdotr! While i haven't played the first few Baldur's games, recognising her from the first Divinity was a treat. Her performance as Jaheira is amazing!
I played D&D and als BG 1 and 2. Fun fact to where Jaheira's accent might be from: She was born on Thethyr and lived in Calimshan for a time with her husband Khalid. I clearly see Calimshan like Arabia, so i can hear some arabian accent. Thanks to the voice actor for making her way more interesting than she already was ;)
Jaheira is older in this game, and my favourite thing about her is how you inspire her to fight. Kind of reminds me of the scene in Lord of the Rings where the elves fight alongside the humans one last time.
I worked out why I love Jaheira so much. She has similar vibes to Ana Amari in Overwatch. Wizened woman that still has a fire in her belly, sassy but compassionate, razor-sharp wit and so full of beans that you regularly forget just how old they both are.
I really wasn't expect the home section. Just walk into a random house doing the usual steal and plunder shits... and then WTF, Jaheira's got daughter & kids?! That was cute ðððĪĢðĪĢ

keeping jaheira alive isn't too hard if you're willing to use wildshape. when a shape is "killed" they just un-wildshape. they have basically as many lives as wildshape charges, plus heals.
I loved this interview, and your others with the cast of BG3. It's been interesting to see how the VA was done for this, because the stories can have different outcomes. I've heard Bioware VA's say the same thing, it can be very complicated because of the branching out of the storylines.
I loved it when I met Jaheira's whole family in Baldur's Gate! I wish there was more of it though especially when we consider that the upper city content of Baldur's Gate was cut off.
I think Tracy nailed it, Jaheira was instantly believable to me, it was very much "Jaheira, older, more tired, but definitely the Jaheira we knew from the old games". Minsc to me was very much "Matt Mercer doing Minsc" -a superb rendition of Minsc, because Matt's very talented, and I may be vulnerable to this because I've watched the hundreds and hundreds of hours of Critical Role with Matt doing hundreds and hundreds of voices. Viconia DeVir was the voice that disappointed me, a couple of lines captured Viconia, but she sounded too shrill. Grey DeLisle's deep, buttery-smooth delivery was so delicious and hard to match.
Absolutely loved Jaheira, she is such a fresh character compared to all those brooding origin ones. But with Moonrise, I had to play that fight three times, because she kept running forward reeeeeally eager to die :D I had Shadowheart assigned almost exclusively to healing her and keeping her out of trouble, but it was totally worth it. Thank you for this interview, now I love the character even more thanks to it!
Really liked Jaheira. The way she reacts to important stuff, her kids (more like a sodlier), when you poke her for something (she actually approves that). Too bad we can't romance her. At least, a hug :(
At this point, when I start a new playthrough, I'm impatient to get Jaheira back. I have to force myself not to skip content just to get to the Inn as fast as possible.
Jaheria's responses to things, and the way she responds to military-style humor and teasing just... *chefs kiss*. I *love* her so much. I just wish that Jahira was an option as an origin character to play through as. Out of all the characters, Jahira is the one I really relate to the most, and feel like I'd behave the way she does if me, the person, was inserted into this setting. You did such a fantastic job of bringing her to life. Halsin is my number one, and Jahira and Minsc are tied for #2 favorite characters in the game. All the characters are done so well, and feel so lifelike. It makes sense they were picky about who they chose for each character. I have to say the people who made the choices just nailed it.
God damn I didn't realise she was a home girl ð I'm gonna need to ask who she is now, everyone knows everyone here ð ð That's surreal. Ask Traci to give you a Tcheuchter accent if ever she's back on ð
On my second playthrough, I decided to resort to save-scumming because Jaheira kept wandering into Hadar's Hunger and dying. But I wouldn't have it any other way. She's just too great as a companion in act 3.
I'm an old. I played the first 2 Baldur's Gates when they came out. Jaheira was always a favorite companion in BG1, and one of my favorite video game girlfriends from BG2. Honestly, I had no idea that Larian hadn't gotten Heidi Shannon to voice her for this game. Tracy did a great job.
I really hope Mintharaâs voice actress will have an interview. Tracy Wiles is an exceedingly charming woman.

My heart jumped out of my chest when LEGACY Jaheira and Minsc came to the party. Just a little pissed the developers made Jaheira a level 2 character and why she kept dying at the towers. I was furious. But got around to save her.
I love Jaheira! Thank you Tracy for giving her character so much life!

She did an excellent job. Honestly speaking, I thought her and Raphael were the best-acted/depicted characters in the entire game, and their actors aren't getting nearly enough credit for their performances.
Another fantastic interview, watching them all as they come out has been a joy.
My only gripe with Jaheira is you get her too late, though once I do she doesn't leave my team. She's such a fun character to have around and her soldier-style camaraderie works well with my Tav since he never misses a chance to call her old, but equally she's very genuine and wears her heart on her sleeve a lot more than you'd expect, like when you find a certain old friend, when you go to her house, and when she tells you about her backup plan she had prepared if last light inn went bad.
My gripe is gameplay mechanic wise. Jaheira is one of the characters you meet the earliest in the first Baldur's Gate. And it is very likely that she stays in your party until the very end of Throne of Bhaal. By that time she is Level 20. Also she is a multiclass character from the start. A fighter/druid.
So why is she only a level 8 Druid when you meet her in this game? I know the level cap for playable characters is Level 12 (the highest enemy I met was the Dragon at Level 17). So to reflect her experience she should be Level 12 from the start. Or do Levels degrade with old age considering that she is probably something around 125? Which is more or less the end of the road for half-elves. ;)
Well at least you can give her her old multiclass back, which I did, so she is now a level 5 Druid and a Level 3 Fighter.
I sadly just used her to get my boy Boo. I should use her more but she still shows up at the end as the High Harper you want at your side.

Bairdotr! While i haven't played the first few Baldur's games, recognising her from the first Divinity was a treat. Her performance as Jaheira is amazing!
I played D&D and als BG 1 and 2. Fun fact to where Jaheira's accent might be from: She was born on Thethyr and lived in Calimshan for a time with her husband Khalid. I clearly see Calimshan like Arabia, so i can hear some arabian accent. Thanks to the voice actor for making her way more interesting than she already was ;)

Jaheira is older in this game, and my favourite thing about her is how you inspire her to fight. Kind of reminds me of the scene in Lord of the Rings where the elves fight alongside the humans one last time.
I worked out why I love Jaheira so much.
She has similar vibes to Ana Amari in Overwatch.
Wizened woman that still has a fire in her belly, sassy but compassionate, razor-sharp wit and so full of beans that you regularly forget just how old they both are.
I really wasn't expect the home section. Just walk into a random house doing the usual steal and plunder shits...

Jaheira was in my party and I instantly jived with her personality. She was my absolute favorite companion. She canât be romanced in game but she is the best.

keeping jaheira alive isn't too hard if you're willing to use wildshape. when a shape is "killed" they just un-wildshape. they have basically as many lives as wildshape charges, plus heals.

I loved this interview, and your others with the cast of BG3. It's been interesting to see how the VA was done for this, because the stories can have different outcomes. I've heard Bioware VA's say the same thing, it can be very complicated because of the branching out of the storylines.
I loved it when I met Jaheira's whole family in Baldur's Gate! I wish there was more of it though especially when we consider that the upper city content of Baldur's Gate was cut off.
all of Jaheira's moments and story tie-ins in act 3 are so good, I had to save Minsc with her and interact with Nine Fingers with her in the party

I think Tracy nailed it, Jaheira was instantly believable to me, it was very much "Jaheira, older, more tired, but definitely the Jaheira we knew from the old games". Minsc to me was very much "Matt Mercer doing Minsc" -a superb rendition of Minsc, because Matt's very talented, and I may be vulnerable to this because I've watched the hundreds and hundreds of hours of Critical Role with Matt doing hundreds and hundreds of voices. Viconia DeVir was the voice that disappointed me, a couple of lines captured Viconia, but she sounded too shrill. Grey DeLisle's deep, buttery-smooth delivery was so delicious and hard to match.

Absolutely loved Jaheira, she is such a fresh character compared to all those brooding origin ones. But with Moonrise, I had to play that fight three times, because she kept running forward reeeeeally eager to die :D I had Shadowheart assigned almost exclusively to healing her and keeping her out of trouble, but it was totally worth it. Thank you for this interview, now I love the character even more thanks to it!
That's why you ask her to join your party. That way you control her instead of the AI, and she has much less risk of dying.
I actually had Jaheira die a lot at moonrise and each time I save scummed strictly for her
Really liked Jaheira. The way she reacts to important stuff, her kids (more like a sodlier), when you poke her for something (she actually approves that).
Too bad we can't romance her. At least, a hug :(

At this point, when I start a new playthrough, I'm impatient to get Jaheira back. I have to force myself not to skip content just to get to the Inn as fast as possible.
Jaheria's responses to things, and the way she responds to military-style humor and teasing just... *chefs kiss*. I *love* her so much. I just wish that Jahira was an option as an origin character to play through as. Out of all the characters, Jahira is the one I really relate to the most, and feel like I'd behave the way she does if me, the person, was inserted into this setting. You did such a fantastic job of bringing her to life. Halsin is my number one, and Jahira and Minsc are tied for #2 favorite characters in the game. All the characters are done so well, and feel so lifelike. It makes sense they were picky about who they chose for each character. I have to say the people who made the choices just nailed it.
God damn I didn't realise she was a home girl ð I'm gonna need to ask who she is now, everyone knows everyone here ð ð That's surreal. Ask Traci to give you a Tcheuchter accent if ever she's back on ð
On my second playthrough, I decided to resort to save-scumming because Jaheira kept wandering into Hadar's Hunger and dying. But I wouldn't have it any other way. She's just too great as a companion in act 3.

I'm an old. I played the first 2 Baldur's Gates when they came out. Jaheira was always a favorite companion in BG1, and one of my favorite video game girlfriends from BG2. Honestly, I had no idea that Larian hadn't gotten Heidi Shannon to voice her for this game. Tracy did a great job.
