I've been feeling suicidal and this video has literally put a smile on my face. I'm a little bit inspired by life again. Let's hope it lasts longer than Opeth's prog death era 🤘🏾
I've studied Mikael, and that's what I thought he did first, but digging more into it he actually uses his entire vocal folds. His growls, especially live are powerful. He doesn't use a closed mouth much, his vowels are pretty neutral. To give you an idea what to aim for, you just have to think about how to sound like a choking old man.
I think I'm for like 10 years into the Opeth-writing style because I just enjoy this music-style for such a long time. Normally the evil open-chords and evil-acoustic sections make Opeth Opeth and it's helpful if you have a warm voice to fit the style.
I often use Freeverb2 with a long tail. Big room size, low wet, 3 second delay, low pass at 500hz, high pass at 7khz. The bigger trick is that the reverb sits between two compressors - the first compressor is mild and before the vocal is "excited" with a mild preamp, that gives you an evenness to work with. The long tail reverb, as described above, is next (the reverb's gotta be subtle and long) then the overall thing is compressed heavily. That way the reverb disappears when you're singing and appears again when you're not. If clean, the final trick is the three part harmony trick inspired by Steven Wilson. That's a bit more complicated but boils down to singing one part for each note in a chord, assuring that the chord inversions are picked so that each part travels the least. Hopefully I get time to show that off in a video soon.
It's a combination of Steven Slate Drums and Native Instruments StudioDrummer. I think for this one StudioDrummer was the cymbals and SSD was the tubs.
That'd be cool. If you haven't already seen it, Ben Eller does a fantastic rundown of how to play guitar like Mastodon: th-cam.com/video/YFop1gTbaj8/w-d-xo.html
"Because Opeth"
Well if I haven't uttered those exact words 973 times in my life before now.
how many times are you up to now?

This madlad sounds more like Opeth than Opeth

You had some killer riffs and your distorted vocals sounded like a mix between Belakor's and Opeth vocals. Good shiz. Subscribed.
Wow! That felt really authentic. Great work dude!
Love this channel man, I play Opeth on drums and dream of playing like that on guitar, just a dream mind.
THIS will improve my life.
From one Blackwood to another, you inspired me man!
Oh man you gave me such a big grin for 7 minutes. Thanks for making it still alive after 20 years!
You mean... Still (a)Life?
good stuff right here! thank you
great work friend. You also did it with some humor. Congratulations, you sound more Opeth than Opeth himself currently!
you nailed the perfect Mikael sarcastic aloofness
I miss old opeth, this was great

Nice video btw! Funny to watch!
your growls and cleans.. both sound amazing! awesome video!
You don't perhaps live in my neighborhood, do you? 🤘 Awesome creation.
Dude, you are talented as hell!
Much better than 2020 Opeth
In Cauda Venenum has some bangers don't lie
@@stefanfyhn4668 I don't care about bangers I want strong feeling and atmosphere, I even liked heritage.
4:18. Lol that sounds exactly like Nathan explosion from metalocalypse
Wow man, you nailed it! Your normal voice almost sounds like Mike too! Haha! Nice artwork on the your walls btw!
Bruh
Those vocals are so good
What reverb are you using for the clean vocals? It sounds fantastic!

Subbed. Good shit

HOLY SHIT HE DOES
reminds me of blackwater park
Hey lad, nice surname, same as mine!
I enjoyed
Fucking genius man!
To make like opeth back then you will need a death metal vocalist.
Good stuff. Subbed.
What drum vst are you using? It sounds really good.

How likely would a Carcass LIY be to happen?
Not out of the question though I'm not sure I've got the guitar chops to just casually bust out some Amott.
What drum vst do you use? It sounds bad ass!
Oh nice. Can you teach me how to write like Mastodon too?
That'd be cool. If you haven't already seen it, Ben Eller does a fantastic rundown of how to play guitar like Mastodon: th-cam.com/video/YFop1gTbaj8/w-d-xo.html
the problem of wanting to sound like Opeth, is that Opeth it's so unique that when you sound like them, it feels like a ripoff
I sub'd to your channel!
But... you ARE my dad...
LOL thanks man
what midi keyboard is he using ?
That's a Keystation 61 but I don't play it anywhere in the song. In my FF / RS vids I'm using a Korg D1.
( little lack of groove on drum beat )
:))
this doesn't sound like opeth at all
Good shit Dale!
