  • My book, friends! My book is available to pre-order through the publisher, and additional rewards are still available too, for now unbound.com/bo...
But in the meantime, a recent health scare made me think about an experience I had with a medical doctor a decade ago. I've wanted to talk about it for awhile, in the hope that if you're a model and it happens to you, you might be better prepared than I was.
As always, I can be contacted on kinkyarielanderssen@gmail.com or I Tweet daily as @ArielAnderssen

I never tell them that I am a model, I say I am a journalist (I have the degree), this discrimination happens all the time and I do not want to deal with it.

What an absolutely dreadful experience! Thank you for sharing your story. The academic department I used to head up before retirement does a lot of work producing educational content aimed at medical professionals with the goal of combating prejudice and preconceived notions about various populations. I plan to share your video with my former colleagues as an example of the biases that can creep into the relationship between doctors and patients. I am glad you finally got the treatment you needed, but I am also saddened by the delays you had to suffer to get treatment.

Send the letter but also send a courtesy copy to the hospital administrator. The query: “What do you do for a living?” should not be asked unless the patient deems it necessary to aid in a diagnosis. It’s not just prejudice one encounters in the medical field, but everywhere these days -incompetence, arrogance and lack of common sense. Exhausting as it is, one must always have their armor on and shield at the ready to deal with such people and situations. I’ve had many and have dealt with a few the way you are with this doctor - a letter. Very self-healing. More people need the courage to call these people out in the intelligent way you are doing. 👏🌹

I never realised that you had suffered so much over the years. It certainly never showed on the number of occasions that I met you at Erotica - a sign of your professionalism. Very pleased that you have been given the all clear in respect of cancer. Your letter which you are sending is spot on. I think you should, perhaps, have sent it sooner.

My best friend is a consultant surgeon, through him I've met many more. Having grown up in the time of 'trust me, I'm a doctor' It used to surprise me, some of them you really do wonder how they got where they are. He even jokes about it himself sometimes...the xxx consultant entered the room, knuckles dragging on the floor :)

As a big fan of your work I'm so sorry to learn that you have had to endure so much pain for so long, and that your health problem was so much exacerbated by unsympathetic and prejudiced treatment. It's good to know that you finally got a diagnosis and treatment plan, but this seems to have taken much too long.

What an awful thing to have to go through, shocking😢
On your more recent issues I went through the same in 2000 convinced I had colon cancer fortunately mine turned out to be ulcerative colitis, serious enough but something my mum also had so I knew it could be dealt with. One thing that has helped me massively over the years is always seeing the same consultant by going private. It’s not that expensive if you just see them for consultations. I’ve seen the same guy for 20+ years, he’s probably not supposed to but he drops me onto his NHS list whenever I need a scan then a private appointment to discuss results. All meds via GP so again on the NHS. I’m not too far away from you and see my consultant at the Shrewsbury Nuffield. If you need a name let me know. Remember Endoscopy Departments - where s**t happens!

Thank you, and I'm so sorry you went through that. I researched ulcerative colitis a little while I was waiting for my colonoscopy and it sounds very unpleasant so I'm extremely glad you've got a good consultant. I'll certainly go private if I don't get a resolution, so i very much appreciate your advice.

From someone who has cancer, dead now, I am glad you don't have the feckin bugger. I used to have a yearly liver ultrasound to check the eye tumour hasn't wandered there and it is a bit uncomfortable as my liver is shy. So I was lying on the bed and forgot that a few days before I was at a fetish club nightand had a few whip marks on my side and tummy and I got a wee look from the woman doing the test. I just said oh it was consensual and that was the end of the conversation.
Jesus Mary & Joseph and the wee donkey too, that consultant is a right areosole. I can't work due to my massive sight loss, radiation is a bugger, but I do photography as my hobby and it has saved my sanity. A few pro togs have said to me I should not do it at all and not hire models on studio days as I don't sell my work, most of them shut up when they see my purpleport portfolio.
Looking forward to getting my copy of your book

It will forever baffle me when I hear stories about unpleasant, unprofessional and, sometimes, downright horrid medical professionals. I simply cannot understand why anyone would choose to become a medical professional unless you are an empathetic people person and want to help other people. In my view, if you're not those things then the medical profession isn't for you. Too many times have I heard stories from the likes of yourself and other friends, and even some of my own experiences, about doctors who seemingly couldn't care less about their patients, and it's further exacerbated and made much worse in instances like this where, not only are they not empathetic or professional, they actively discriminate against their patients based on whatever preconceived notions they have about their career choices (or any other characteristic). That someone can let their (objectively discriminatory) personal beliefs or biases interfere with their work and affect their professionalism really irks me, especially in scenarios like this where we're talking about people's health and often when people are at their most vulnerable. To do such a thing and not even take the time to ask the right questions or listen to your patient and indirectly prolong the suffering of your patient, simply because of your personal beliefs, is reprehensible. Because how else are you ever going to know what they're experiencing or feeling unless you ask thorough questions? Jumping to conclusions based on someone's profession solves nothing. You're not psychic, Doctor. I do also wonder whether there is, was or can be an element of superiority complex with some doctor's, perhaps in this instance with his preconceived notions of modelling? I hope that writing that letter has helped you work through that experience and your experiences since, it is excellently and strongly worded without being or sounding harsh, which I suspect many people would suggest you're well within your rights to be, explains how his actions made you feel, how it affected you both in the short and the long term, and it invites and encourages the doctor to do better going forward. He can't right how he wronged you (other than perhaps by apologising), however he can make sure that he doesn't wrong anyone else.

I always take someone with me to any Dr's this seems to keep them ore polite and civil I think Dr's are used to people lying to them so when an honest soul tells them the trytg they don't get it sadly

Where possible I try to go along too. And when I am being treated myself I insist on correcting any medical professional who calls me "Mr." - "it's Doctor, actually" (which I try to say a bit apologetically like I am letting them in on a collaborative secret). The effect of that can be quite dramatic on people's demeanour (even though I am not a medical doctor). In fairness to them I think they have to deal with such a broad swathe of the general public that they are probably on their guard at work the whole time too - me saying I'm a doctor (in as friendly fashion as I can) gives them permission to enter "discussing with a colleague" mode. Fellow-Ph.D. friends report similar experiences.

Ariel, PLEASE post that letter to this medical doctor! If he has any shred of humanity and decency in him, he will be very thankful for your feedback. If he gets offended, it just means he is a quack and believes himself to be divine next to god (YHWH).
Unfortunately the medical doctors trained in the 1960s to 1980s were indoctrinated with this mindset of being infallible and medical science as the have all and be all solution for humanity, and that within their lifetime immortality would become a reality. And it was only in the late 1990s and early 2000s that this mindset has slowly started to shift and change.
