    Niro has more room for storing ur small items next to the driver and passenger and the 2 cup holders are internal and retractable and can be hidden from view that a cover slides over the that compartment. The Niro is heavier given its centre of gravity having better stability and smooth ride due to the longer wheel base and due to the extra weight, it's slightly slower on the get go which accounts for the less distance traveled and mileage. The interior is more premium looking on the Niro. A friend has a Kona & she saw the difference was a better appealing interior all round. My Brother also has a Kona before I had purchased a car and when I went to the International Car Show - We bought the Niro when we took a test drive on the streets. The manufacturer mileage on both cars are not what u actually get but much higher. Our Niro got a max. of 301 miles or 485 Km. Both the Kona & the Niro are exceptional what each personal use.

    Thank you Jonathan for doing what I've been saying FOR MONTHS about Hyundai & KIA as the ONLY OEMs that WILL be numbers 2 & 3 after TESLA! --- Especially HYUNDAI, but KIA as well, is Particularly Excellent as an Affordable EV that offers Excellent Range, Quality and Style FOR ITS PRICE!! Excellent comparative-analysis as always. Please keep Educating the MASSES, they would be lost without what you bring to our Sustainable Energy Movement!

    You NEVER even touched on interior MATERIALS. The Kia employs MUCH more in the way of "Soft Touch" materials and enjoys features that aren't even available in the Kona at ANY price, at least in Canada. Having said all that, BOTH are ridiculously priced here in Canada. I own an absolutely "Fully Loaded" Kia Niro Hybrid SX Touring which cost us just under $33,000 Canadian (slightly more than $25,000 U.S.). An E-Niro where I live, with the same equipment level, costs over $56,000 Canadian. That's an insane 69% price premium for what? A slightly faster 0-60 time? Our Niro Hybrid has also exceeded it's EPA rating of 43 mpg overall, including a mix of summer and winter driving with snow tires. I keep ALL gasoline receipts in a spreadsheet so I KNOW exactly what our Niro delivers.
    There's much talk about EV's reaching price parity with ICE vehicles when battery prices hit $100 per Kwh. Well let's assume that the current price is as high as $200 per Kwh (which it isn't). Even IF the price of batteries dropped to ZERO, that whole 64 Kwh pack (O.K. 70 Kwh with reserve) saving would be $14,000. So how come the $23,000 price gouge? The Niro Hybrid already has a significant battery and the EV version needs NO gasoline engine nor the 6 speed transmission which is in the hybrid. Those items aren't FREE to produce.
    In my mind, there is a lot of B.S. going on in the whole EV world! I can appreciate that traditional dealers DON'T want them due to less scheduled maintenance ripoff opportunities.

      Thank you. I'm about to purchase a Niro Hybrid and was looking for the data you provided here ! Thank you for that. How is reliability and everyday living ? Its seems like a perfect small SUV for a small family. We downsizing from a Minivans due to my daughter leaving to college and me buying a Transit T350 for business with 5 seats (just in case we take a long road trip). The Kia seems better looking and overall just a tad bigger to be more comfortable and for same price as the Kona.

      @@oldwortex5818 My wife and I love the Niro Hybrid. Everyday living is great. For both of us, Ingress/Egress has been excellent, even though our statures are completely different. The 2 Level "Memory Seating" is a wonderful option for us. The heated Steering Wheel and Heated/Cooled Seats are much appreciated and we rarely use the HVAC system, especially on shorter trips. Our Niro is now about 31 months old and reliability has been exemplary. I do suspect I'll need to replace the rear brakes this year BUT that is a problem for ALL vehicles in our Salt Laden winter road conditions. The rears ALWAYS need replacing before the fronts as all the salt spray kicked up by the front tires drifts back under the vehicle and deposits on the rear brakes causing them to corrode. If you live in a year round warm climate, I doubt this would ever be an issue. Although my wife could care less, I REALLY like the Dual Clutch 6 speed transmission in the Niro and consider it a "Marriage Made In Heaven". Although I would NOT want such a transmission in an Internal Combustion Vehicle due to Clutch Slippage on hills etc. However, since the electric motor in the Niro is not turning when the vehicle is stopped, such clutch slippage is not an issue. At near as I can tell, the Niro always starts initial movement under electric propulsion. If I wish to engage in the process, I can actually get BETTER mileage in Sport Mode by shifting to higher gears manually, sooner than it would if left in Drive. On one 75 mile cross country trip, travelling at posted speed limits, I managed 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers (just over 62 U.S. mpg). If I had just left it in Drive for that trip, it probably would have run about 4.2 liters per 100 km. The shifts from the Niro's DCT are virtually instantaneous and it will hold a selected gear until I shift it again (unless of course if I'm risking engine damage).
      I was recently in the market for another vehicle and wanted a Plug-In Hybrid Niro BUT our Canadian dealerships had NO inventory of the SX models. We've become so spoiled by the feature set of OUR Niro that I just wasn't going for the lower trim level. So instead I purchased a 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, you know, the one with the Solar Roof. Unlike the Niro the Sonata comes with a conventional 6 speed Torque Converter Automatic. Even though it has paddle shifters to allow manual gear selection, it will only hold a specific gear for a few seconds before it switches back into Drive. Although the Sonata is a nice vehicle in many ways, I must say that the Kia Niro rides more smoothly in spite of it's shorter wheelbase. Also, although the "Guess-O-Meters" i.e. average fuel consumption displays are optimistic in both vehicles, our Kia Niro still exceeds the EPA ratings slightly. Not true with the Sonata; in fact not even close. The Guess-O-Meter has proven to be almost 20% inaccurate and my "real world consumption" is considerably below EPA estimates, although still decent for a vehicle of this size.

    This a very good comparison!! I bought a cheap 2017 Chevy Bolt little over a month ago for work, it does it's job, but interested to up grade at some point, I seen both these in person recently, I have to say exterior Kona looks better but quality everything else Niro seem better, I would not pay $50,000 out the door, you have to be pretty short or better duck your head to get in back of both of these EVs, I'll wait a year or two when the price drop, as the range and fast charging ability of these EV will improve faster then you might think, ideally AWD would be in a perfect world. My personal 2 cent.

    Great video Jonathan and interesting changes that you’ve made!! Between the 2, I’ll take the Niro because of being able to option in a heat pump plus the additional interior space. Just a little side note, they are still lacking the charging infrastructure like Tesla have which gives Tesla the edge over both.

    The waiting list is long on Kona and e-niro here in Sweden, salesman told me that there is a car with highest trim level and 64KWh battery, I was very close to buying it, took my wife and she sat in the backseat and could notice directly that leg room is very small, a 6 feet man can not actually sit comfortably in the back seat, but for me, Kona's dashboard and center console are more elegant. I guess it is better pay the difference and get a Model 3, but I am sure build quality is far superior with Hyundai and Kia...

    • @oldwortex5818

      Yes, Tesla build quality is pretty dismal. Kia dash seems to be better imho and most people voted the Kia being nicer all around. Also the Kia has more legroom so you should look at that car in legroom is important.

  • @stevebritt
    @stevebritt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmmm...This is why only comparing certain specs is a bad idea. I went to an EV show SRP put on in Arizona where both were present. The Niro was noticeably nicer inside and clearly more comfortable and practical in general. The interior layout/features also seemed slightly better thought out. The range numbers you cite do not adjust for interior size or carrying capacity. - Somewhat misleading. The Niro has slightly less range because it's a larger, longer vehicle with the same e-system, not because it is less efficient.

  • @fields1
    @fields1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If Hyundai/Kia offered the Kona/Niro EVs with AWD and about 300HP, I might see a reason to buy one. In their current state with only FWD and a somewhat poor traction control system that doesn’t seem to be able to quickly enough vary power, the Niro and Kona suffer from tremendous torque steer and just light up the front tires for a smoky burnout. They don’t
    really appeal when a Model 3 costs about the same but is RWD, faster, better to drive, can DC fast-charge almost twice as fast, and is drastically more technologically advanced. Then there’s the fact Tesla’s cars will always be up to date because of their OTA updates. You also can’t even find any of these vehicles for sale unless you’re in select cities/states. I’ve looked before and the closest available of either Model was like 400 miles away in Atlanta. Not a single car was available in NC, VA, SC. I see tons and tons and tons of Teslas here in Raleigh, NC. I’ve never seen a single Kona or Niro EV on the road. I see hybrid or turbo versions of both, but never the electric. The one thing that is appealing is the $7500 tax rebate. I hope Hyundai/Kia do offer more EVs and develop a dedicated platform that doesn’t have all of the compromises an ICE to EV conversion suffers from.

    A series of fires prompted mass recalls of Hyundai's best-selling Kona EV in South Korea in October. In South Korea, Hyundai has recalled 25,564 Kona EVs built during September 2017 to March 2020 due to the risk of short circuit possibly caused by faulty manufacturing of its high-voltage battery cells.

    Looking at the Niro EV (or e-Niro in EU) vs the Kona EV in terms of performance, charging speed and battery is in the reality close to the same. Since they share the same platform, and share most drive train components, it's more a question of you like things like practially and apperence. The effiency in Kona i slighly better, it's for most user neglectible. If range is important when going on longer trips, using a DC fast charger, the driving style is by far more important. Kona is smaller car, and you can really tell by just sitting in each one of them. Kona have a strange looking center console taking up far to much space. The Niro have a more open solution.
    If you ever consiering a Kona EV or Niro EV, make sure you try them both. You'll be amazed how many people try the Kona and experience the small and really not so pleasent place to be in. Especially if your a taller person. The Kona EV have a slight benefit in terms of pricing, but it's still to much money to spend on anything you really didn't like.Or if you really want that HUD.
