I have one and it has come in extremely handy. Saves the old running downstairs and running back upstairs and then going back down to try the next breaker. The way they wired this old house, one day, I'm going to pull all new wire and redo it, but until then, that tool is extremely handy.

I've noticed that works a lot better if you take that dead front off also if you have a multi-layer circuit or a twin breaker it's kind of hard to decide which one

It's been a while but I can remember most of the cheep circuit tracers were useless for finding circuits in large commercial buildings. Surge protectors, ups systems as well as other electronic devices on the circuit your tracing is kind of PITA with a cheep tracers. The ET310 is probably far improved over the older versions and the price is increasable. Thanks so much for sharing this great tool. 👍👍

That is a handy sniffer Ed! We had an electrician put in a new Main Panel in our last house and few of the circuits got misplaced or maybe he was just putting them in a better spot. This would have been a great solution to easily finding wich circuit the plug was on instead of flipping through each one of them! Great video as always and thank you for posting!

I bought a similarly functioning tool many years ago and have used it hundreds of times when repairing and troubleshooting residential electrical systems. Great tools to have and great for labeling electrical panels. Another great tool is an underground locator but much more expensive!
That sounds like one of those tools I wouldn’t need often, but it sure would be handy when I do need it!
@@MyClutteredGarage With the number of people buying compact and sub-compacts backhoes, it seems like a no brainer rather than having to accept the responsibility or paying for repairs, or fines. An 811 rep might be a good person to bring into one of your Monday evening livestreams.
My breaker panels aren't labeled. That would be a really handy tool to make that happen.

Great video Ed, and makes me rethink my original opinion of this tool, which I also have. I couldn't ever seem to get an accurate reading, but armed with the new (to me) info regarding powering on at a distance, surge protectors and 240 voltage I need to reevaluate. Unless I have a bad unit I'm thinking operator error is the more likely culprit!
(Oddly enough, this is something I actually read the instructions on, but now I'm thinking maybe I "skimmed" rather than "read". 🙄)
I also failed to mention in the video that you should press the power/reset button in between tests if you are tracing multiple circuits.

I used it on a 230 electric dryer 30 Amp outlet. Use the alligator clips and using two pieces of wire and attach them to alligator clips then stick one in the common and one in either hot but just one and you can detect the circuit breaker. The common to either ground is 120 volts but 230 from both hots.

I have a similar tracer for either live or dead circuits. They are time savers for sure. By now the reliability of them has got to be much better than the earlier versions. I use it to send a signal down the underground dog fence to find the break. Nice review on a very nice product Ed.

@@1BigDawg357 It is about ten years old now Ron, and its from WW Graingers. It's not the best in the world but it's still easier than the old fashion way. It works best inside a house or building and not so good through the dirt. It was expensive for what it was back in the day and I'm sure there are much improved and lots cheaper versions today. I will try to remember to get the name of it and provide it to you here. Its on the shelf in the shop.

Klein tools are great.
Excellent video but one major complaint.. none of your electrical plate cover screws are oriented correctly! They are all over the place! Some of the screws are horizontal, some vertical some on angles.. how do you sleep at night! Haha. Good video, I want that tool, but you have to align your screws. You know, for safety.

If you take the dead front off you could find it the first time in 30 sec I've been using the tool for around 4 years now and here's the thing if you're a service electrician and your troubleshooting a loose neutral and trying to find that breaker if you plug this tool into it you are going to burn your tulip because there is a lose neautral

I think they recommend unplugging your surge/UPS system if you don't get a proper reading. I was able to leave mine plugged in. Thank you!

One question: do you have to re-map the Breaker Panel every time you move the transmitter to a new outlet?
Hi. I think that once you "map it" it learns the panel. Of course, I tend to wave it over every breaker a few times anyway.

Looks like a very handy tool! You mentioned about unplugging any surge protectors but did the rep say anything about surge protectors that protect the whole panel ? In other words you can't unplug it because it's wired into the panel.
Interesting point. I don't know the answer to that. It's also not guaranteed that a surge protector will interfere. I should have said "some can or may interfere". Personally, I did not unplug my surge protectors. I called because I did get a false reading the first time I used it. However, it worked fine the next time and ever since then.
@@MyClutteredGarage I just tried one of these yesterday and it kept reacting to two different circuits. Now I think it must be one of the surge protectors I have on that other circuit, was thinking we had wiring issues or it was operator error. Will turn off the surge protectors and see if they were interfering with the reading on the detector. Thank you!

What if i use a step up Transformer 110v/220V for the Transmitter would it be applicable?
Would it make sense to use the clips accessory on a light switch terminals (have to pull switch out of the box but could just leave it all wired in). I suspect it wouldn't matter if the switch is in the "on" position...unless it is part of a three way configuration which would need the mating switch to be "on"...am I picturing that correctly? Another video?🙂

If the outlet dose not have power can you still use the tone generator? Other ones seem to have a power source built in to the generator.

Just wondering if the Klein rep said if an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for a computer would also send out a false signal. Most UPSs have surge protection built in but are more sophisticated than the average surge protector. Thanks for the informative video.
Not sure, but I left mine plugged in and there was no issue.

Thank you. I don’t think range is an issue because the signal travels through the wire.
I understand I meant the distance between the transmitter and the receiver its wireless and it hass a range in order to it to pick a good signal

Will this detect another outlet on the same circuit?
Will the tool still work accurately with reverse polarity when using the Alligator Clips on the white and black power-in wires or does it make no difference which Red or Black alligator clip is attached to either the white or black wire?
I don't know for sure, but I don't think it would matter.
I find it it’s a very good tool you working with Romax, but it’s not good if you were in a commercial building with conduit pipe.

Do the circuit breaker finder works in conjunction with the Klein outlet tester? Does that mean that the tester is sends a signal to the breaker finder to allow it to find the correct breaker? will it tell you if wiring is correct with no power supplied? When wiring a new house and you want to test a circuit before power, is into the house.

My outlet have no power , actually 3 of them one in the garage, one light in the patio and one outlet in the patio. All my breaker are on. Nothing is tripped. Can I trace which breaker using this tester?

I don’t think so. There has to be power going through the circuit. You may need to call an electrician.
Would this work in an rv on dc? Or only on
a/c. RVs are notorious for circuit problems.

One question...I have a whole bank of outlets that are dead out in my laundry room and garage. The dryer and furnace are fine but all the 120's are dead. No breaker is tripped and I even went thru and flipped all that I wasn't sure of just to be sure they were all on. Since there is no power at these outlets, would this circuit breaker finder be able to work so that I can at least see what breaker they are hooked to? (This includes my garage door, too. I will have to manually raise it to get the car out.) Anyway, just wondering. As you can tell, I don't know a lot about electric circuits and won't be messing with them but still want to know about the breakers. Thanks!
From what I understand, there needs to be power from the breaker to the outlet in order for this device to work properly. I’m no electrician, but I would start by looking for a faulty or tripped GFCI outlet. Laundry room, and garage outlets are often placed downstream from a GFCI outlet. Otherwise, you may need to call an electrician. Good luck! -Ed.

You have to carefully remove the switch plate and pull the switch out to connect aligator clamps to silver and bronce screws.
All of the outlets in my basement suddenly stopped working. The basement was refinished a few years ago, and I'm pretty sure they were all wired to the same breaker. The problem I have is none of the breakers in my panel are tripped, and I can't figure out which breaker these outlets are running to. I reset all the breakers making sure all were fully on and that didn't work. My guess is it's a bad breaker that just didn't trip. (Can that even happen?). How can I safely test the breakers in my panel to see if one is bad? Is there are certain type of meter I should use?
I’d call an electrician. They have magical ways to trace these things. Good luck!
Would this find low voltage? I’m looking to turn my thermostat off to replace it but it is low voltage.
I don’t think this will find low voltage. But you don’t have to worry about getting shocked from a thermostat wire. You should, however, turn off your heater so that you don’t accidentally touch the wires together and turn it on.
All the videos I watch never said how far can it detect so can you please tell me how far can the Klein ET310 track, does it work on a 3 storie home? Thanks

Yes, it does! I have a 3 story home and just labeled my entire fuse box with this tool. Went a little overboard and created an Excel spreadsheet for all the breakers and what they connect to and taped it on the door. They don't give you much room on the label to write them all in

What if there is no power coming out of the outlet and all the circuit breakers are in the “ON” position. Not one one circuit breaker has been tripped “OFF”. Is the transmitter getting it’s power from the outlet or does the transmitter has it’s own power source to work.
Hi Mel. The tester needs power at the outlet to work. Might be time to call an electrician. Those guys have magical ways of fixing issues. 😄
@@MyClutteredGarage That's what I thought. No power to the transmitter, no signal going to the reciever. I had this problem in my circuit box. All the breakers were in the "ON" position but no power to some outlets. My neighbor came by and switched the breakers "ON" & "OFF" a couple of times which resulted in getting powert back to the outlet. In conclusion the end result was called "Reseeding the Contacts" or cleaning the contacts on the breakers by switching the breakers "ON" & "OFF"

What happens when plug the transmitter into an outlet and you get no light on the transmitter? Do you change the breaker or the outlet?
You’ll have to do some deeper testing. You might need an electrician.
Start by replacing the $1 outlet.
Make sure white wire goes to silver screw, black wire to bronze screw and bare ground wire to green screw.
Make sure braker is off.
You can also test the braker with a voltage tester.
The outlet tester sometimes tells you what's wrong.
Does it work if the Socket doesn’t have power ?
Probably not. It Hass to travel through the wires. If the socket does not have power, then there’s probably something wrong with the wires.
That thing is pretty neat but it's also about $50ish bucks. Most people have more kids than they need (I know this from being at Walmart). Pick out the one with the least potential and give em a key, you'll find the breaker. :)

You need to use the alligator clips

Okay. But what if I need to find the breaker for a hardwired 208v Walk-in condenser?
I’m pretty sure it only works for 120v.
@@MyClutteredGarage That is my point. 120v is an extremely limited application. Less than 25% of commercial equipment runs on 120v, and even Residential A/C runs on 208v. What good is a tool which fails 4/5 of its use-case. Klein is a professional brand, afterall. Their logo is literally a Linesman. Not exactly 120v work there......
@@LynnJynh9315 now that I think about it, it seems there’s no reason you can’t put an alligator clip on one leg of a 220 circuit and trace it with this tool. I have not tried it though. Good question!
What I don't get is if I plug the transmitter into a receptacle and then use the tester on another receptacle in the same branch, I get nothing. Even if I pull the cover off and touch the hot wire. But it works at the wire in the panel. Actually makes no electrical sense. I'd like to be able to plug into one receptacle and just touch other receptacles and switches to see what's on the same branch.

Good point. It looks like receiver only works with brakers and not with outlets, switches or wires.
You should call Klein and ask them about it and maybe in the future they can add that future.
I bought a pencil voltage tester with flash light.
What about a light switch
It should work for that using the optional alligator clips.
I doesn't work. The damn thing narrowed it down to three breaker switches. I tried all three. The power was still on. I returned it.
That’s a bummer! Any UPS systems in the house? They claim that can interfere.
