  • I always dreamed of climbing with David. I would watch videos of David climbing with Conrad Anker and say... when I'm 28, David will be 42 and I'll be climbing with him. Sadly, those dreams are now destroyed, as David was killed in an avalanche, alongside Jess Roskelley and Hansjorg Auer. They were climbing the M-16 route on Howse Peak. When I first heard the news on Wednesday, I paused... This can't be real... This wouldn't happen to David. But after many hours, I finally admitted to myself David is gone. We must not remember David as a man who died in an avalanche... but instead remember him as the thoughtful, energetic and motivated person he was. Rest in peace David... may your legacy live on.

    The somnolent skies the iced snow bridge, reaching from on to another ridge. Hands frost bitten, eyes half blind, two friends lost and ropes hard to find. The wind icy and cuts so deep, my inner core, there is no heat. Dear God please help me, for I'm so cold, hours ago, young eager and forever bold. Now reduced to a pitiful stumbling man, reach down please and hold my hand. I'm in a place, no conquest now, I know not my journey, the why or the how. For my climbing at last has come to and end, no courage or strength, or hope to spend. Lay me down and spare the pain, find a place for my body lain. The mountain has won, I did my best, oh how I failed that ultimate test. My cairn is there for my spirit to dwell, read the inscription and read it well. "Man is mere mortal, climbing up to the gods, consider your strengths, consider the odds. For this man fell, as others have done, for many have tried, and succeeded there are none. But in time one will come, strong and with fright, standing atop the mountain, and bathed in it's light. 'We the lost and fallen all came for that chance, to bathe in the sunlight, our life enhanced. In memory of all the mountaineers who loved to climb

    Just a few months ago I began watching videos on TH-cam of alpinists climbing big mountains. I didn't know who David Lama was. When I first watched a David Lama video on TH-cam I was so incredibly amazed that I soon found myself watching every single video of David Lama available on TH-cam. I thought "wow, this guy is such a young and talented mountaineer". I soon discovered that he was one of the most talented climbers in the world. His videos were really inspiring to me. I never thought the life and career of such a talented and young climber would end so soon. On his videos David always looked so passionate about climbing, he always looked so calm and in control.
    I try to find some meaning out of this big tragedy. To me the big lesson here is to follow your dreams with passion no matter what. To do what you love and to love what you do. Always. It doesn't really matter how long you live as long as what you do in life makes you happy. It is not about how long you live but how much you enjoy what you do in life regardless of your age.
    Great lessons by this young and talented climber. Thank you so much David for the inspiration. May you rest in peace.

      Im Abstieg vom Howse Peak geriet die Seilschaft in eine gigantische Lawine, die nach menschlichem Ermessen einfach nicht zu überleben war. Das sind leider die "objektiven Gefahren" (Lawinen, Steinschlag, etc.), denen auch Ausnahmekönner immer wieder zum Opfer fallen. Wenn man das Gipfelfoto vom Howse Peak sieht, muss man sagen: Hier sind drei Menschen gestorben, die etwas taten, was sie zutiefst liebten, und die gerade einen weiteren glücklichen, intensiven Moment erlebt hatten. Das muss jeder für sich entscheiden, aber viele würden vielleicht zustimmen, dass es nicht das wichtigste ist, dem Leben mehr Jahre zu geben, sondern den Jahren mehr Leben. Daran gemessen hatten Lama, Auer und Roskelley bereits ein langes, erfülltes Leben hinter sich. Das muss man nicht so sehen, aber man kann es so sehen!

    First Uli, now David. Will it be Alex next? I've been a climber all my life, but these leading-edge projects are becoming so extreme you have to ask if they are justifiable.When you're pushing that close to the limit, it's almost inevitable that some fine day you'll run out of luck. Not only is it a waste of young lives, but it must be devastating for their families.

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@listrahtes Sadly, it absolutely wasn't bad luck. It was a case of over-confidence and bad judgement.
      The mountain was out of condition with serious avalanche risk. There were warnings in place. Other people who were in the area have said that they felt the dangers were unjustifiable and stayed in camp.
      David and his party were three of the most talented alpinists on the planet. This was their first training climb as a team, and it seems that they were simply too attached to the idea of enjoying a climb together.
      They started their route, realised it was too dangerous, and instead of baling out they traversed onto an easier route and kept going. They were killed while descending an obvious avalanche chute after they summited.
      A tragic waste. It seems that in their confidence they had forgotten that big mountains are no respecters of mere human ability.

    • @listrahtes
      @listrahtes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tullochgorum6323 But isnt that often the case in winter ascents? Mountaneering at that level at least to me implicates that level of danger. Think about Lamas Lunaq Ri mindblowing solo ascent. Seems you know better about the conditions so I wont contest that. Maybe even for winter it was not to be recommended. Still many very experienced climbers die simply because of nature be that Steck, Buhl.... Patrick Berhault fell to his death because a snowdrift went of under his feet. I think its in general a price we need to accept going into the mountains. Still very tragic to loose these three so young.

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@listrahtes Well, I've chatted online with a guy who was in the area at the time, and he was pretty amazed that they decided to climb that day, and also that they kept on going once they had realised that their initial route was unjustifiable in the conditions. Apparently the conditions were truly terrible.
      Yes - winter climbing is extremely dangerous. But surely that's an argument for increased caution - not for taking egregious risks?
      I know a couple of people who have done major alpine winter ascents - and they will wait weeks for the right conditions. Sometimes a project will take years till the conditions come right.
      I think the problem here was that they'd wanted to climb as a team for some time, and this was the first time it had all come together. So they decided to take the risk and grab the opportunity. After all - they were the best of the best - so what could go wrong?
      As the saying goes, there are very few old, bold winter mountaineers.

Some people just believe it is better to have lived 20yrs and did everything than a 100 and did nothing. To each their own. But I think David lived an amazing life and achieved more in his short life than most do. I admire him!

    The death of David went close to heart, even tho i didn't know him personally. Thru his dedication and mindset I got inspired to do what i love the most and I m thankful he shared it with us all. We lost one of the Greats, not only in climbing but also in general. I find solace that he died doing what he loved most, still there is this emptiness of what could have been. I wish that his family, friends and the climbing community can overcome this sad time and look back at his life knowing that he lived it to the fullest. Rest in Peace David

      I am so glad I’m a nobody and that when i die my spirit won’t have to contend with total strangers blowing smoke like this.
      “Not just in climbing, but in general...”
      He wasn’t curing kids with cancer, you do know that, right? He went on endless vacations. Cool, but not exactly worth a medal of honor.
      “Died doing what he loved?” Selling red bull? Take it as a lesson that doing other things as well, finding a balance, might be a good idea. Might have saved Davids life.
      Not trying to be disrespectful-even if its happening. In climbing and life it is more important to be realistic. Thats my “inspiring” take away from this man.
      This kind of post mortem idolatry makes me want to puke. Sends the wrong message to the kids.

      Todd your words come from somone who wants nothing from life. David had a passion that inspired people through how much he loved what he was doing. Red bull sells red bull and pays athletes to be the athletes THEY ARE. Leading our kids to think there is a cure for everything is far more dangerous then anything David accomplished in his life.

    • @toddmulligan2609
      @toddmulligan2609 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I want a little bit from life...and that is enough. do you want YOUR kid to try to take too much, pushed by sponsorship money? “Too much is never enough” is a sickness. It has only one cure. Its killing the whole world for god’s sake. Glad I’m a nobody so I don’t have to live or die as a proxy for anyone’s insane fantasies... mostly my own. -but yours are special.

    I think its pretty close to say that Lama was on his way to be the alpinist of them all regarding difficult routes if he would have lived on. To achieve so much so young is breathtaking and unheard. His talent was very special. His free ascent of Cerro Torre was only one of these unique feats and this combination of technical climbing ability with alpinist qualities has imo only been seen very few times . Dani Arnold isnt far behind and a Hans Jörg Auer also was an absolute animal (The fish in free solo is close to Honnolds El Capitan). Imo had Lama lived on he would have gone up to be considered the most talented alpinist of all time with fantastic resume. It doesnt really matter as mountains are imo not for competition but friendship and respect but its still mesmerizing and most of his ascents have a beauty in style and routes he choose.
    In a way Lama continued in Wolfgang Güllichs foot steps. Much like if Güllich would have been his father. IF you look at their lives there are so many similarities. Güllich also was for quite some time the best climber in the world period but then ventured on to alpine style climbs and free solos. Lamas Cerro Torre project reminds me of Wolfgangs Trango Tower free ascent of Eternal flame.
    Both were free thinkers and continued to be very respectful, friendly and not caring about financial sucess. They will always be remembered and by that also Hans Jörg Auer and Jess Roskelly. RIP.

    The void in you you try to fill with anything of this world is Jesus Christ , he is the only way to the kingdom of God the only way to reconcile back to God,you cannot be a child of God until your born again through Jesus, if this world teaches you to do what you want,pleasure is the goal,thrills,it's a lie,doing what God wants is the only truth,you will never have peace,love,contentment,joy,without knowing Jesus because he is those things,unless he dwells in you,you will seek search,crave,lack,want,desire,to fill that void with anything ,it won't last,it's fake counterfeit,nothing in this world can give you eternal life except Jesus,rest in peace is only for those that accept Jesus without him you will spend eternity in torment, all you think your taught,is a lie,eternity is a long time do you know where you will spend it? Hey ! We are all different and we cannot understand everything about others action and life. I think it is amazing and incredible to look at what some gives us to look at...about skills and fearlessness...adventures and spectacular scenery. Some how it is inspirational...and challenges all to understand...that everyone has bigger potential.... that it is about doing it...belive and be fearless. However I think many of those things about climbing is to stretch the luck and the safety....way too far. Than again...it seems that someone has the gift to do such a things...and it ...as i said has many different impacts on others life and others perspectives...others beliefs...others ability to complete and fulfill dreams. Much respect for the skills, bravery and thanks for sharing. I agree....that one should live ... and blossom, instead of regret a boring life...when old. Be safe...take care.
