No is no in Aus/NZ but there is a slang term for no which is commonly used which is "na" different word, same meaning. Not taught in schools but slang. Similar to saying yeah instead of yes.

Its a kind of American chauvinism I guess. There is no one "correct" accent, and if there was it sure as hell isn't American English. I can barely understand some southerners. Even average Americans say words in very strange ways (to an Australian), like mirror of aluminium, and they can be pretty harsh on vowels themselves. I guess I have to remember this next time I give a kiwi shit about their accent.
