Hi Gabe, Cownose are abundant in Tampa and Hillsborough Bay in the spring and summer. We used to "snatch" them and use them for shark bait back when it was legal to catch and hang sharks. The big Cownose were like tying a rope to a train!! FYI; its a rule...if you see cownose rays scraping bottom (they eat clams, starfish, etc) there will be big cobia and the odd snook swimming on their backs eating the crabs that get turned up!!.
The Mullet Inn (HWY 60 Courtney Campbell Causeway) also punched 3/4 inch plugs out of the wings and sold them as Fried Bay Scallops in the restaurant. Never caught them to eat myself but the fake scallops were good. One of the Storms took out the Mullet in the late 60's.
I was in the Navy (1990-1994) active duty at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. When I did have time to fish there, it was the pier on the beach front. I usually caught Spot and Flounder, which were delicious. I would catch the occasional Bluefish or Spanish Spotted Mackerel. Absolutely delicious for weekend fish and eggs breakfast.
Gabe, I grew up in Norfolk,Va. Back in the day(‘60’s)Wachapreague on Eastern Shore was the place to go for flounder. Over the years Have fished up and down ocean and bay side for Big Red Drum and Black Drum..Tarpon, Speckled Trout..Chesapeake Blue Crabs,best seaside salt oysters plus awesome deer and duck hunting..we live in NC now and don’t get up there as much as we used to, but lots of memories.

Greetings from Ocean City, Maryland !!! Awesome video !!! As A chef , I used to get fresh Skate And Cownose Rays from the O.C. commercial harbor ,. after properly processing right away ( same as shark meat ) I used to sell breaded Skate wings at the bar and always sold out . BAR FOOD along with some cold BEERZS is where it's at . The Cownose I would treat more like fresh tuna ( sometimes having that bloody dark color on the larger rays ) . A simple quick soak in teriyaki or your favorite marinade and a fast grill does the job for me . I have been down in your neck of the woods many times and have looked over the bridge on a clear day and started getting hungry for some fresh fish .
I used to live in Chesapeake and I always went on the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel pier at island 1 to fish for sheepshead and taugs! Plus I got my biggest bull red off that pier at 52lbs and a 88lb black drum!!! Love your videos and keep it up blue Gabe!
I'm a Tim Wells fan as well as a manta ray meat fan... Best if both worlds, Gabe. Been all over every foot of the Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland shores. Fishing, crabbing and oysters.

We used to fish out of Cape Charles on the Virginia Eastern Shore in late November and December. I caught a 40 plus pound striped bass there one time.
Great video! Welcome to Virginia! Hooked a cow-nosed ray on vacation near Corova Beach, NC. 45 minutes to get it in and another 10 minutes figuring out how to get the hook out without getting the barb jammed into me. Ugh. Have fun!
My husband is from the eastern shore. His dad and brother are saltwater cowboys that run the ponies from Chincoteague. It’s so beautiful there!!

I live on Maryland's Eastern Shore. If you put out any cut bait in the Chesapeake Bay, you will catch a ray or skate. By the way, the sika deer and huge whitetails are on the Maryland part of the peninsula. However, the fishing in Virginia is usually better.
thats the ramp I use to kayak out to SMith Island, just north of Fishermans! ive seen tarpon jump out there, sanbar shark breeding ground as well! awesome video! the Virginia Barrier islands are loaded with marine life and the area has a super interesting history.......glad you came up!

Gabe, been to the Eastern Shore more than a hundred times. In-laws use to live in Accomac. You're down low near the tip of the peninsula and it is as beautiful there as anywhere. But, the greenheads are vicious. They make horseflies seem friendly.

The meat reminds me of the gills of a mushroom. I lived in Maryland for a few years while there we would go to the Potomac. We moved to Fredricksburg Virginia before coming home. We use to go to Virginia Beach . Beautiful seafood available.

Hey Gabe I was stationed in Virginia Beach at Naval Air Station Oceana during my 4 years in the Navy repairing the hydraulics on the FA 18 Hornets. Beautiful place. I didn't get to do much fishing or hunting but loved my time there.
I live in Virginia Beach but from Florida. Glad you got to see how things are done here. Blue crabs are great but I miss the spiny lobster that I grew up on ❤️

My mother and her whole family were all born and raised in the Tidewater area on the DelMarVa Peninsula in Newport News Virginia. I'm thinking this is part of the Eastern Shore, but am not certain. I spent every summer of my young life in Newport News with my mom when we would visit her parents at their big, old house and three of my mom's sisters all lived close by each other. My Aunt Vivian, who I was named after, lived with my grandparents. They were my favorite times of my young life and I miss it, still. We swam, fished and crabbed along Hampton Roads. My cousin, Sam and I beach-combed all along the shore, all day long, exploring and digging up clay to make things.

Yes sir love eastern shores did a good piece of time there commercial fishing and raising clams. I stayed in Exmore and few other places there like Cape Charles.

I can't believe you came all the way up here to shoot a cow nose ray in the middle of COBIA season. We have massive cobia here, I live in Virginia Beach, which is right next to the eastern shore. If you do come back up here we can take you cobia fishing on our boat with a tower.

I think they call them horse flies cuz they're so hungry they could eat a horse I tell you what I've had them chewing me a few times and they can take a chunk out real quick.
