    Just a hint for you, when cutting thin sheet metal with a hole saw, run the hole saw in reverse and it will not grab, giving you a much smoother cut.

    Kaowool is toxic if you breathe it in so you do want to be wearing a face mask
    - **isn't wearing a face mask**
    And it is extremely itchy so you want to be wearing long sleeves
    - **isn't wearing long sleeves**
    Grant Thompsom logics

    • @Sembazuru
      @Sembazuru 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes, a bad example. Demonstrating perceived (but not real) invulnerability. I'm not saying that I never take short cuts like this, but never when teaching.

    • @aacai5158
      @aacai5158 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Christopher Elliot, It is toxic because it releases fumes when cut, not when it is just there. He was probably wearing a mask when he was cutting it, but we can't be sure because we can't see his face when he is cutting.
      Plus, it is just itchy, nothing harmful if it touches your skin, so if you don't want to wear long sleeves, gloves are just fine. He's not setting a bad example, just telling us what to do if we want to try this project ourselves.
      Also he has to talk clearly and it would be hard to understand if he had a mask on.

    • @cameronyartz1424

      It's important to lead by example, as actions always speak louder than words. Most people tend to pick up tricks and shortcuts when they watch others, even into adulthood.

    • @Sembazuru
      @Sembazuru 7 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Unfortunate that he is setting a bad example. A paper dust mask would probably be sufficient (but I haven't done the research on the particle size so I could be wrong).

      The minimal exposure is unlikely to cause any permanent damage. Typically exposure to inhalants like this needs to be prolonged for any lasting effects. That being said, it is quite disappointing to see him setting such a poor example for the young people who watch his channel.

      *Wears short sleeves and no mask

  • @smithyoftherust
    @smithyoftherust 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Something to add; we've been using kaowool to build blacksmith's forges for years now, and one super-critical thing to note. It's fine to cut slow when it's cool, but it disintegrates very easily when hot if you poke it. If it does get hit when hot, you also have the added effect of that hot ceramic dust being blown out at you by the gas pressure. It's best to put a fire brick in the bottom of your furnace or forge to put parts or the crucible on, which has the pleasant side benefit of making your lining last a lot longer.

      What he didn't mention is that kaowool becomes more friable after it has been heated, which means that it is even more dangerous once the foundry has been used.
      He really ought to have some type of hardface over it to seal off the fibers.

    Great Idea Grant, I would add one more step and that is to line the kaowool with mizzou refractory cement and plistix refractory so that the swirling fire doesn't blow microscopic fibers into the air and then into the lungs. The Kaowool fibers can fly far away. So defintiley and outdoor or garage with door open set up. IF you like I can send you the information. I'm the medical director/consultant for Blacksmithing For Beginners, International Blacksmithing, and Modern Blacksmithing. Thanks Grant for all you do....truly amazing to see you inspire others. Thanks again.....and I'd love to see you try HHO gas as a foundry/ forge fuel. As we talked about before. Docchuck

  • @SateenDuraLuxe
    @SateenDuraLuxe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    You should really consider coating the kaowool with ITC-100. The coating helps improve the efficiency of your foundry by up to 30% because it can reflect 98% of the IR radiation back into your crucible. IIt also protects against respirable silica. Refractory materials like Kaowool begin to break down at 1800 degrees releasing a form of respirable silica known as cristobalite. When applied to kaowool and cured, ITC-100 eliminates this problem.

    • @reidaaustin
      @reidaaustin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      SateenDuraLuxe how exactly does the stuff apply to the kaowool and how thick of a layer would you need. Aslo, how much of the stuff would you need. Its really pricy

    Just ordered the items and a Ladel needed from Amazon(without the propane torch thingy) and came up to $150. It works AMAZINGLY well. Ive made a multitude of Knuckle Dusters, Batons, Throwing stars, knifes and Axes. My next project is to reform those 22mm Cresent Wrenches. Thank you so much for this.

      Update: Removed Handle and made the hole in the middle then used an Arch Wielder to add handles on each side of Hole, like the Cement Donut. Keeps more heat in and allow easier addition of metals, as well as allows access for the ladel.

    Can you please make a metal phone case 👍

    • @Superseaslug
      @Superseaslug 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      a metal phone case, while coo, would probably block the signal from a lot of the radios in the phone, leaving you with poor signal. this is why a lot of manufacturers do not use metal in the design of phones anymore.

      Superseaslug3 Or because phone companies are cheap...

    • @Thalanox
      @Thalanox 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would depend on what metal you use.
      If it's a metal that's magnetic, like iron or steel, then it would interfere with the EM waves in the phone signal. If it's something that isn't magnetic, like aluminum, then I could see it working.
      Aluminum is rather soft and bendable, if memory serves. That's why it's not usually used as phone case material. Look at the bendable iphones if you need an example.

    • @soranuareane
      @soranuareane 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aluminum would make a Faraday cage for the phone and it wouldn't work. Magnetic or not, if it's metallic, it'll block the signal to the phone.

    Nice work. I made one almost identical about a year ago. After multiple firings the Kaowool will begin to break down. I couldn't have that as I was refining pure silver and it would get into the melt. The solution for me was to coat the Kaowool with refractory cement. it's a pain in the a$$ to get it on without wadding the Kaowool up in a big sticky mess but with patience it will make that furnace last for years and hundreds of firings. Where did you get the burners if I may ask? As always great job!
