This is it then, the big one - Laurie Greenland takes us down one dry and dusty DH track for the 2022 MTB World Champs in Les Gets, France. If you’re new to cycling, then it may at first seem odd that you can win a world championship in one race, but, well, you can, and when you do, you get to put the rainbow stripes on the rest of your jerseys for life!
This will be the second time that Les Gets has hosted the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, with that appearance coming back in 2004. Back then the French location was a regular fixture on the UCI mountain bike racing calendar. Les Gets disappeared from the UCI calendar after the 2004 Worlds but regained its spot in 2019 when it became a World Cup location. Racing at the World Cup in Les Gets took place in 2019 and 2021.
Being a world champion is a huge deal in mountain biking and the race carries with it more kudos than any other. For one year after the World Championships race, the winner of the World Champs gets to wear a special jersey that signifies them as the World Champion. They can wear that jersey at any race they take part in as long as they are racing that discipline. This jersey is usually white and has the colours of the rainbow in a band on it.
The broadcasted events for the 2022 UCI MTB World Championships will be shown on Red Bull TV. The live stream is, however subject to a geo-block. If a stream isn't showing when you click the link below, a local broadcaster has the rights in your country.

Les Gets' method of building a new track: flag off where you want it it to go, build a few jumps and a few berms, invite the world's top riders, let them rip up the grass and top soil and we'll call it good.

Yeah calling this the best track of the year is insane. Mont Saint Anne was the best this year by far
Not only Les Gets method.
One of the other benefits of winning World Champ is that your country gets an extra spot in their quota (if you race in the championships the next year). So, South Africa, France, Canada and Bulgaria got 8 spots because Minnaar, Nicole, Goldstone and Yankova are the reigning champs. The most any other country gets is 7 spots.

It's quota+1, if your country would get 4 riders in that year, they get 4+1

Can you please use higher fps for POV videos? The preview run at Fort William used 1440p 50fps, and it looked so much better. 25 fps is not enough when there is so much movement.
Remember you're in France - that marshall at the jump was simply on strike for a few minutes

I was in les gets on Monday. This bikepark is super fun. So many tracks to explore, not only downhill but also Enduro. Great vacation activity!
Nice run! Those jumps look like they could get tricky at speed, one seems short and the others really big

They're not good at making jumps.. Even some small local jumps in that area are better. Lol
I took the Gondala up there looking down on the start hut 2 weeks ago. The track looked epic, Gondala was the most rickety I'd ever ridden, was cacking myself lol

Good job Laurie for spotting the finger wiggle, for all he knew there could have been a crash after the road gap. Marshall needs a talking too though, use a red flag if there is an obstruction.

FWIW: Weather forecasts from the BBC and Accuweather say sunny skies for qualis Thursday but some rain on Friday and Saturday (Saturday is race day), so conditions could change a bit after qualifications are over.
I wouldn't take forecasts into account too much, they've been a bit unreliable around here (I live about 70km from Les Gets). The amount of times I left with sunny forecasts to encounter big storms or vice versa was quite high... Then again, it's the Alps so... good luck getting accurate forecasts with them mountains!
@@NickArthfael That's forecasts everywhere, I guess. I only mentioned it because at about 3:22 Laurie mentions how the one section might change if it rains (he said it could get "treacherous").

Why is it geo-restricted in the states? Kinda lame....had a beer and treats and everything. All the other races showed. Looks like I'll be having a Heineken at 5 a.m. watching American Pie
Kind of a boring looking track really. No rock gardens, tight sections or anything greatly challenging.
Wide open off camber high speed should cause a few crashes though.
I think it will make line choice easier to see when you aren’t actually there live, though. Fun for tv

You cant even recognize a pure bred race track when you see it. Steep and natural and taped wide. Why do all racers say schlamding was the best race track? Why are the racers saying this is the style of track they like to build to ride and practice on? Are you American?

@@liminalkid makes sense. there were some riders stopping on the track. how on earth are they allowed to do that? aren't they a huge risk for the descending riders?
There is nothing special about this track, it doesn't even look hard, look at Mont Saint-Anne for a real challenge.
This side of the mountain is super steep and when dry the speeds are insane it is a different challenge to MSA but just as difficult

Most will use a 30mm internal width either carbon or aluminium depending on sponsors or personal choice

DT Swiss ,Hope, or Mavic all make good quality aluminium rims and far cheaper than E13 carbon rim
