TOP 4 pedals for starters | LEARNED SO MUCH from PETE THORN!

  • Pete Thorn is helping me out with which 4 pedals to buy first, how to dial 'em in, and the sounds we can get out of just these 4 pedals!
    The specific pedals we used for this video were chosen because of a few reasons: the availability in the store when we recorded the video, the price, and the fact that we had experience or not with these pedals. You should see this video more as a suggestion. The four styles of pedals we talk about, the way we set them up, the order of the pedals, etc., just some suggestions. I think Pete gives A LOT of incredible advice on how to get the most out of just these 4 pedals!

      @@TexasJackdaw Indeed. In fact, I met Pete in person at an event in Epsom, UK about 8 or 9 months ago. Strangest (and coolest) thing to see a TH-camr you respect suddenly appear in person. Nicest guy as you can imagine. I got into Davids and Beat o I think some time after I had been watching Pete. I know Pete met Rick Beato a couple of months ago or so as well. So it's this little community of guys out there that, if I ran into them in person, I'd certainly want to have a chat and a drink with if they were up for it. Cheers.

    • @TimminatorPS
      @TimminatorPS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That is a precious piece of advice indeed, and I loved the choice of "simple" pedals.
      When our band split up, I sold some of the stuff that I would only need on stage (4x12" cab does not even fit in the bedroom). Then I started wondering which of my gear I would actually "need" to play at home. I traded my modelling combo with 100+ weird presets for a lunchbox-amp with three knobs. This way I now spend way more time on actual practicing, as I just flip the on/off switch and that's it. Maybe it is just me who gets distracted or intimidated by knobs and LEDs :) But now I really know my eqipment and I have learned to make better use of it, e.g. that little trick with the volume knob on the guitar as shown in the video.
      Obviously pedals are extremely useful in certain contexts, but if you are wondering how to improve your sound, do not assume that you can always buy the solution. Okay-ish stuff will probably do the job for your bedroom sessions.

I feel it’s also a great choice just because it teaches you many skills, such as learning what high range notes work with low range notes and what scales you can use over certain cords. You could also learn how to create different tones with multiple parts. It’s basically like having a band where you control every part with your feet.

    This is my budget setup. I have loads of fun with it.
    I have been playing for about 2 years.
    Boss RC-1 Looper pedal, Small Clone, Boss SD-1, Boss DS-1, Boss blues driver, Muff pi. I use the Delay on my amp (fender champ 40).
    And a Behringer NR300 Noise Reducer for when I wanna go nuts mixing pedals.
    I'm not an expert at all but for a brand new guitar student I would recommend the Boss RC-1 Looper pedal for sure. The feeling of making your
    own little rithm track is amazing. Great for working on your scales or writing your own songs even. Second I would recommend the
    Boss SD-1, it's super cheap and it fucking rocks.
    Small Clone + Boss DS-1 = Nirvana style tone
    Boss RC-1 looper pedal + Boss blues driver + Muff pi = Loads of (dirty/rock) blues fun. (My best combo so far!!)
    Boss SD-1 + clean tone = good enough for some AC/DC or Foo Fighters fun.
    Boss DS-1 + Muff pi = get your grunge on.

    Tip to beginners and intermediates. The fact that is not featured in these really good videos is that the heart of your tone comes from three places: 1. your fingers; 2. your amp; and 3. your pickups/guitar. If you are looking to get your tone out of a pedal, you are looking in the wrong place. Pedals are tools. The good one's are designed to take a good tone and color it in a very simple and specific way. For example, a good overdrive will work with your amp and guitar, not against it. In my experience, guitar players that come strolling in with these massive pedal boards chok full of every pedal imaginable have the worst tones. They've crossed over the line from guitar with effects to effects with guitar.
    If your just starting out, here are some good pedals that you should own:
    1. Ibanez Tube Screamer - any model will do. I prefer the Mini;
    2. TC Electronics Stereo Chorus -(not the Corona Chorus) They're not easy to find these day, but, if you find one, grab it.
    3. Boss Chromatic Tuner
    4. Boss Compressor (optional, depending on guitar/amp configuration)
    That's it. You don't need anything else. I played over 300 shows in every size venue imaginable with nothing but a Peavey Classic 20 through a 2x12 cab, an Ibanez Tube Screamer mini and a chromatic tuner. I've seen other pros play with less, just a really good amp like a Fender Bassman or a Vox AC30 plugged straight in.
    When it comes to effects, more is usually less.
    Cheers!

    Ok The strangest thing happened to me on Tuesday morning. I am a flight attendant for a US Carrier and I take online courses from Paul Davids. So I was going through his posts and found this one about pedals. I thought Pete Thorn was an interesting guy so I subscribed to his channel. Thought that was the end to that. Well was on a long layover in Charlotte NC and we are near a large Mall there I go to mall go to local Starbucks get a coffee and sit down in Mall area and people and enjoy my Coffee. When who should walk by but Pete Thorn!!! Walking with someone they proceed to Starbucks I just walked out of! I am kicking myself that I did not introduce myself to him and tell him this tale. So Thought I would post here! I am now hoping to Run into you Paul Davids! Lol the next time I layover in the Netherlands! I will not miss opportunity to stop and chat with you!

    This was actually really good to hear. I've been playing for 30 years and did the whole gear trip. I had to downsize my gear because of life and now I am happy with my fender twin, an old Ibanez Ibanez RG, and a wah. A little tweak here and there and you begin to really enjoy finding you voice

    1. Overdrive: Soul Food (alt.: Tumnus, Archer,...)
    2. Delay: Boss DD-7
    3. Distortion: Suhr Riot
    4. Reverb: Marine Layer (alt.: Hall of Fame, Blue Sky, Ventris, RV-500,...)
    Chain: Soul Food -> Riot -> DD-7 -> Marine Layer

    • @EnterJustice
      @EnterJustice ปีที่แล้ว

      For my own playing style I'd probably drop the reverb and get some modulation instead (Chorus, Tremelo, Univibe, something like that). Delay is fine, but maybe I'd get one with some more options (DIG dual delay, or one with tap divisions and modulation).

    • @nok22
      @nok22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree but also, keep in mind, pedals should add some more dimension and just a nice tone to the guitar, of course it's all about the player and how well you can play but I think pedals are nice to express your style more. That being said, surf rock classic would not be were they are today without reverb, and the kinks wouldnt have gotten the edgy sound without distortion.

    • @joshuamirabal822

      Truth be told: the amps and guitars we have in 2021 are way better quality than what they had in the 60’s and 70’s. Much tighter tolerances these days. Guitars used to be so inconsistent that Eric Clapton pieced together one Strat from 17 Strats. The fogies don’t agree with this and will argue to the end but the truth is in today’s manufacturing know how. Granted these modern amps won’t be serviceable for as long as the old turret board designs but they’re cheaper (adjusted for inflation) and are more consistent. Having played a Blues Deluxe, there is a really bad shrillness to the treble that I never liked but there is a simple mod to tame it. Try one cranked in person and you’ll hear the treble. It’s bright. I heard it’s a trick to make you think the amp has more volume than it actually does. Sold my Fender off for a British amp and couldn’t have been happier.
