Can't wait for this show. Tom Petty is one of the greatest singer-songwriters/ bandleaders in Rock history. I still miss him.
Such a talented and prolific songwriter. The best part is his songs are fairly simple from a chord perspective, but his ability to write melodic hooks are among the best of all time.
@@manuelper I remember listening to Tom Petty back in 1989 and even then marvelling over his body of work. Tom was truly a classic artist who left us too soon.
Developed a real appreciation for Tom Petty’s music after learning/covering many of their songs and a few deeper tracks! A true song craftsman.
He certainly was Eric!
Hooks for days - Tom Petty is EAR CANDY!
Nice to see the love for Hypnotic Eye. A great finale. Oh and what an outstanding panel.
As a kid, I would always complain when the local rock radio station would play stuff like Tom Petty instead of heavier, more hard rocking stuff. But through the years, I started to find myself digging more and more of his songs. When Tom Petty died, I started listening to more of his stuff, and it really hit me just how amazing Petty and his band are. So, so many great songs. And Petty remained a hitmaker for a very long time. Now, I wanna go listen to some Tom Petty!
Never too late to crank up some Petty - consistent excellence in the music he and band made together! Plus, Tom's lyrics MEAN SOMETHING! He's gone but his music ain't goin' anywhere!🎸❤️🎸❤️
Same! I got sick of Refugee and stuff a long time ago, and just went back last night. Fun stuff and at nineteen, after getting into Thrash, Groove, Doom, Nu, Melodeath metal, etc etc... I'll always love good old rock and roll.
Great idea to reconnect with Tom Petty again. After a great TV concert in the 1970s, I immediately bought the debut that had just been released. After catching up with the 2016 Greatest Hits compilation by Geffen, this has inspired me to dig a bit deeper now. Thanks for your great imput and a happy new year to you all!
Happy new year Gert!
Thanks guys. Enjoyed the episode, Miss Tom Petty. A good ranking of his albums that i thoroughly enjoyed, I see that I dug out Pack The Plantation Live album on vinyl that I have. I was a semi fan of his and enjoyed his music on records and enjoyed for long time You're Gonna Get It album i had the single I Need To Know hooked me in to him. Refugee a song classic I love when I would listen to that and Free Fallin and so many of his stuff. Tom could come up with such great gems of songs that is for sure and all though I had not gotten to see him but enjoyed shows that I would get on cassettes of a few that are quite enjoyable as well. He and the band were so entertaining and a great band to watch and be into. Thanks, I miss Tom and glad that he and The Heartbreakers and the band came around and gave the world the great memories that they did, A Merry Christmas To all Pete. Rick, Jamie, Steven, Scott, and Simon for his appearance at the end, Such good discussion guys thank you! 🎄🎁🎅
Thanks Jon. Really enjoyed doing this show. Merry Christmas!
just what I needed - a new direction - and I need to give Tom Petty more time in my listening. Thanks for the great review/ranking.
Thanks for watching!
Great! I really enjoyed myself watching this guys. Thanks.
You gave Tom Petty the royal treatment: every album ranked by a great team of 5. Full Moon Fever is my favorite.
Thanks Michael!
What...a...segment! Loved hearing different views of the albums. Great video. Thanks to all who participated and for Pete the ringmaster in setting the whole video up.
Great show guys!Glad to see long after dark get the love!
Great show guys, makes me want to go back and do a deep dive into these albums. Laszlo is hilarious!
Damn the TORPEDOES/ 7️⃣9️⃣. 🌵 desert island for me. Thanks guys. Awesome episode 👍💯
In addition, the “ While my guitar 🎸 gently weeps / with PRINCE, Petty, Lynne, Winwood etc, to me is one of the most memorable/ ICONIC tv 📺 musical moments ever. IMO. When PRINCE kicks” it in. Absolutely, hairs on my neck/ chills / PHENOMENAL job by all 👍💯
Thanks Gary!

As Tom Petty and the heartbreakers are my favorite, I was elated to see this review! Especially on Christmas day. It was like a present to me, being a big fan of sea of tranquility.
5.into the great wide open 4.hard promises 3. full moon fever 2.damn the torpedoes 1.Wildflowers
Our pleasure Randy!
Thanks for watching and hope everyone has a great Christmas!
Really enjoyed doing this show with this fantastic crew Scott. Have a great Christmas!
I really enjoyed that your top 2 were Damn the torpedoes & Long
After Dark Scott. MTV played “You got lucky” in heavy rotation. There was also a MTV
world premiere video for “Change
Of Heart” (live) I recall. One story town received airplay on the radio
in upstate NY on PYX106 as well.
Good job. 👍
@@MrRedrider1968 Thanks! LAD has long been a favorite of mine. When Pete was counting down his favorite albums from 1982 back in February, I think I placed it around 5 or 6. Cool to see that others also rank it high.
Merry Xmas Pete and the SOT gang!
Thanks Ignacio! Merry Christmas!!
@Pete Pardo - Walls (Circus) - How you said it reminded you of 70's Fleetwood Mac. it probably does because Lindsey Buckingham does do backing vocals on the song.
Great show, guys! Nice Hills shirt, Jamie! Quite a throwback!
Into the Great Wide Open is my personal favorite. "Learning to Fly" has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. It's one of the most genuine and life-affirming songs I've ever heard ... P.S. when you guys were talking about why Long After Dark didn't get much airplay or promotion and has been forgotten - it got me thinking that there was an abundance of great solo artists in this era and only so much room on the charts, particularly John Cougar with American Fool and its two massive hits.
That’s a good point. Never thought of that.
Very excited! Looks like the 3 solo albums are included. This would be tough for me. Also want to shout out the Mudcrutch albums. Dig em 👌
Excellent video and panel !
Great episode
Thanks Patrick!
Great show for Christmas Day..Petty Rules..Merry Christmas Everybody!!!
Thanks Stuart. Merry Christmas!
It is rare that a artist or a band has one masterpiece of a album. To me Tom Petty has three. Yes I said three. Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers and Damn The Torpedos. He doesn't have a bad album in his catalog. But it's my top 3 that I listened to the most
I agree 100% Chad!
A great Ranking of the brilliant Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers , 5 stars to Damn The Torpedoes and Wildflowers , Happy Christmas to you all on SOT
Thanks Jim! Happy Christmas!
Great show guys!!! I need to check out some of these albums!!! 🎶🎶🎶
Fantastic show guys!
My No 1 - Echo. Keep giving it a try, worth the effort. Dark , deep, great sounding, lots of hidden gems.
Torpedoes, Full Moon, and Wildflowers would be my top 3... followed by Hard Promises, Into the Great Wide Open, and You're Gonna Get It. She's the One and Southern Accents are underrated. I agree Tom Petty doesn't really have a bad album.
My fave band. Saw him twice in milwaukee. He was the king of it after all
Great Show. Lots of different Rankings and opinions.
This was a GREAT show! TP just brings out the best about rock music... in every way... including discussing and reminiscing about his music. I hate when whomever is worried about these shows being too long. For me, these discussions are anti-climatic and over too soon when they're only an hour. Just ask Joe Rogan (king of the podcast) about what is too long for a podcast with his 3 hour shows.
So many great albums! I probably go back to Wildflowers the most ." She's the one " might be my favorite though!
Merry Christmas Pete !!!
Great ranking guys, I liked how everyone had a bit different ranking, one of my favorite songs is “It’ll All Work Out” on Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough), definitely not their strongest album, but that song is just great and “Straight Into Darkness” on Long After Dark is another favorite of mine, yes, “Change Of Heart” was a single and played on the radio for a time, I had the red colored vinyl of the single, also, Hypnotic Eye is a great album. For some reason his death hit me harder than any artist that passed around the same time he did, even Bowie’s passing didn’t hit me as hard as Tom’s, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that he came from a similar working class upbringing as myself and he got to live his dream.
“It All Work Out” is such a good song, it’s also on the Elizabethtown movie soundtrack. I bought Let Me Up when it first came out, loved Jammin Me at the time. I recently played some of the album on Spotify a few weeks back and “Runaway Trains” is such a good song also.
For me its Hard Promises number one, always, fan from Norway.
I love the "fight the system" story of the hard promises album cover
1. Wildflowers. One of the greatest albums ever. NUMBER ONE. Head and shoulders. Good call choosing this, Rick!!!
thanks
I think the two last ones they did were some of the best material ever from Petty and the Heartbreakers. Really liked the direction they were going in with those last two albums.
After hearing the rankings, I just ordered those two.

Saw them play live 5 Jun '87 in Mtn View, and 23 Jul '89 in Sacramento. Top five live band for me.✌&🎶
I’ve been a huge fan ever since I got to do local load-in/load-out for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on the Last DJ tour. Incredible catalog.
1. Wildflowers
2. Full Moon Fever

12. Long After Dark

16. Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)
My favourite has to be Wildflowers. When I saw him at Hyde Park in 2017 he played quite a lot of that album including my favourite track Crawling Back To You. I wasn’t expecting that one.
tks guys 🤘🏻
So consistently excellent, Tom + Heartbreakers just seem to always play music that I wanna hear - melodically strong, filled with tasty hooks and vintage tones, never over playing or self indulgent, smart and humorous lyrics, each band member gets moments to shine.....I put Tom Petty with Neil Young for multitude of great songs and true artist integrity! Like pretty much anything they put out! RIP Tom - your musical genius lives forever!
Tom Petty is probably my favorite songwriter of all time. However, I've still yet to hear most of the '90s and '00s stuff. I've heard everything up to and including Wildflowers, as well as his swan song Hypnotic Eye. I, too, am counting the "solo albums" because they still feature Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. And even many of the early albums, I've only heard like once or twice, so I'll just list my top five so far...
1. Damn the Torpedoes
2. Full Moon Fever
3. Hard Promises
4. Wildflowers
5. Hypnotic Eye
But yes, I absolutely miss Tom Petty. His music resonated with lots of people regardless of their race, gender, orientation, area of residence, political affiliation, religious beliefs, or even usual music preference. He was the man!
You all have given me the motivation to listen to albums beyond 1991. I never gave Wildflowers a chance. That was, apparently, a very bad decision.
yes. yes it was
Good stuff Kyle. Hope you enjoy it... I think you will!
I only saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers the once, at Hyde Park in London in 2017. I was pretty disenchanted with live concerts at the time, but within minutes of this show starting I felt like I were 15 again. They played with such spirit and energy and had the crowd in the palms of their hands. Mike Campbell might just be my model of how great guitar players should approach the instrument. He’s incredibly versatile, can play in any style, is tasteful and always in service to the song, doesn’t showboat and has great technique but uses it sparingly. He provided a masterclass that evening. It was one of the great live music experiences of my life. Three months later Tom Petty was dead.
Great artist and killer band. Great job guys! I dearly love Long After Dark, but Damn The Torpedoes has to come in front. Just an amazing album.
I love Petty got to see him twice.I always considered Petty as a newer version of Dylan exept he can sing and rock out better.Wildflowers is my favorite but there are so many great albums.
For me right now, favorite Petty song is "I Should Have Known It" from MOJO. That is just an old time gritty kind of rock/blues song. Favorite Petty album is "Wildflowers". That album stands above the rest.
my Tom Petty ranking
1. Wildflowers
2. She's The One
3. Echo
4. Hypnotic Eye
5. Hard Promises
6. Highway Companion
7. Damn the Torpedoes
8. The Last DJ
9. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
10. You're Gonna Get It
11. Full Moon Fever
12. Into the Great Wide Open
13. Long After Dark
14. Let Me Up I've Had Enough
15. Mojo
16. Southern Accents
Is Wildflowers considered a bit hipster a common opinion? I've honestly never heard that or got that impression. It's definitely my favourite, from first listen in the mid-2000s. I think it intitally stuck with me because it had a prominent acoustic side to it and it didn't bore me. Time To Move On is one of my favourite songs ever, gets me right in the feels. Thing is though, I got the 5cd extended edition and there was no fedora. I'll be demanding a refund 😉
I love Jamie's humour and I think he was just having a laugh with us. I've never considered it a hipster album in any way.
Damn the torpedoes is my favorite Tom Petty album follow by the debut pretty close between those two, unfortunately never saw him live and I chance’s. My dad did in 1987 weedsport with Georgia satellites opening
Outstanding show - enjoyed it very much. Without a doubt, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers is the single, greatest American band in the history of Rock 'n' Roll / Popular music. (An 'American Treasure' indeed). There is so much depth and quality of work in their catalogue. It is remarkable how well they successfully endured and delivered during several transitional periods in their own lives and the music industry in general. They kept to being an 'album' band in the early 80s, when hits / videos dominated. They expanded their sound with albums like Southern Accents and yes came back to the top in the 90s with Full Moon Fever, Into the Great Wide Open and Wildflowers. As others have posted and mentioned in the show - their last two albums, Mojo and Hypnotic Eye were so impressive, indicative of yet a second major comeback. How many other artists /bands stayed relevant for so long (40 years) without 'recycling' the same type of material? They kept finding ways to stay inspired, wrote what they were feeling and just plain gave us amazing songs through and through. And I know 'Nobody's Children' is part of the '95 Box Set, but it so excellent.
Great post Michael! Thanks for watching!
We have a special appreciation for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers here in Gainesville, Florida. Tom always had something to say or a story to tell in his songwriting. Full Moon Fever is probably my favorite, but my favorite song, "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was only on the Greatest Hits album. When my daughter was 10, she went to bed almost every night listening to that album. The Traveling Wilburys gave Tom a chance to record music with some of his favorite musicians and to just have a good time.
I've been a fan of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers since 1982, and I agree that Echo and She's the One are not the band's strongest offerings. But you know what, both of those albums contain some of my favorite songs. "Grew Up Fast," "Supernatural Radio," "Climb That Hill," "Zero From Outer Space," "Swingin'," "Counting On You," & "About to Give Out" are great.
That is very true Paul. The Tom Petty catalogue is one of those rare beasts where everything has merit and none of it should be dismissed. An impressive feat given the time and amount of releases it spans.
Love Pete’s description of lps in general. He needs to listen to Wildflowers more it’s a top 100 lp on my list.
The guys’ faces when Pete put Wildflowers up high. Priceless.
I'm not good at ranking stuff, but a Top 5 I can do ;)

2. You're Gonna Get It
1. Damn the Torpedoes
I bought a 2cd Tom Petty anthology maybe two years ago. Really started to dig it and just went ahead and bought all his albums. For me, all of them are good to excellent and all have some very good songs them, but I like the first 7 albums the most. So from the debut up to full moon fever.
It's a tie between Damn the Torpedoes and Wildflowers(more a solo venture)for me for #1. He is greatly missed. RIP Tom. Merry Christmas to all!
I really like Echo and agree with Steven. Room at the Top is one of my favorite Tom Petty songs and the rest of the album did not let me down. My top three albums are Damn the Torpedoes, Full Moon Fever and Echo.
Great to see some Echo love!
@@TranquilityFireReid I was really surprised at how low most had Echo on their list. It is a painful album, so I do understand that it may be an uncomfortable listen for some, but it's quite powerful. I admit I am a fan of dark, moody & painful albums like Peter Hammill's Over; the song Betrayed is like a knife in the gut; so Echo is right up my alley! :D
@@aldebaran4154 I'm with you completely. I was surprised to see it rank pretty low with everyone else except Rick. I often connect with albums that seem to really come from a time and a place in a band's journey and especially ones that lay it all on the line. Echo did that for me and I listen to it often.
I love Room at the Top, it’s turned out to be my favorite song by him. My brother actually chose it as his wedding song and the band he got had to learn it and never heard of it. They ended up loving the song and actually played it twice that night. Supposedly, Tom stopped playing it on the Echo tour because it affected him so much on a personal level with his ex wife. Gwyneth Paltrow actually went to see him during that tour and begged him to play it because she loved the song and he still wouldn’t play it.
TP&TH are my all-time favorite band, so for me this was a very interesting panel and show. My album rankings-
1. Wildflowers
2. Damn the torpedoes
3. Full moon fever
4. Hard promises
5. Long after dark
6. TP&TH
7. Into the great wide open

11. Let me up (I’ve had enough)
12. Southern accents
13. Mojo
14. The last DJ
15. Echo
16. She’s the one
no mention of the song Swingin' ??!!!
One of my favorites, definitely in my top 10
I did mention it. love the song

Tom Petty is my favorite American artist along with Springsteen. I found out about him on MTV, in those old days when it was a music channel. After that, I have bought almost everything he put out
. 1. Full moon fever 2. Wildflowers 3. Into the great wide open 4. Damn the torpedoes 5. Southern accents 6. Highway Companion
7. The debut 8. Hard promises 9. Hypnotic eye 10. Long after dark 11. You're gonna get it 12. Mojo 13. Let me up 14. The last DJ 15. Echo 16. She's the one
Will have to investigate his albums, like the few songs I have heard, it's strange but there are a lot of US bands I have never listened to like Journey, Styx, Van Halen, Kansas, Chicago and UK bands like Magnum, Uriah Heep etc. I tend to like very heavy metal or classy pop, just can't take to AOR or soft rock, though I love Steely Dan. Another great show though lads, thanks. Listen every night when I crack open a cider. Heaven :)
Good video Pete. Surprised that you did a video about Petty since I've heard you complain many times about his 'nasly' voice. Shall we expect something about Dylan from you in the future? LOL. Didn't think a 2 hr video would keep my interest but it did. I enjoyed the banter with the guests but if I had to rank my top 5 as you say, they would be in this order (1st - 5th). Full Moon Fever, Damn the Torpedoes, Hypnotic Eye, Into the Great Wide Open, Mojo (I like blues).
I must partake here after just popping in for HVSq --- TP&Hb's - the last Great American Band -- am I right on this? I think so -- please let me know otherwise
Doing a Top 10 as I am very familiar with these 10 - the other 5 not so much>>>
10. Hard Promises (don't love the hits off this one)
9 Into the Great Wide Open - this one disappointed but certainly don't hate it
8. Long After Dark
7. Wildflowers
6. Full Moon Fever - somedays I absolutely must hear "A Face in the Crowd" fine album
5. Southern Accents - "Rebels" just phenomenal
4. Let Me Up - got burnt out on "Jammin Me" back then but rest of album carried it- my favorite that year
3. You're Gonna Get It - "I Need to Know" followed by "Listen to Her Heart" A+
2. TP&HB first - Hooked on this band after hearing this 3rd time. Saw them in concert a few months later and forget it - knew they would be an all time personal favorite.
1. Damn the Torpedoes - "You Tell Me" and "Louisiana Rain" may still be my 2 favs by Tom - - Flawless album in my opinion
Very happy I invested 2 hrs here - I miss this stuff and Petty too important to me to pass by. Cannot tell you now about the great comments I heard by this panel (esp Steve R) but just loved this show!
Thank you guys - belated Merry Christmas
And Merry Christmas to you! Thanks for watching and the kind words. Very much appreciated!
Mudcrutch 2 is technically his last album and hungry no more is a great final track to end a career on. He did it all
Highway Companion is very high for me, Mojo and Echo are my bottoms. Full Moon Fever will forever be my number one, for sentimental reasons. Rich Strickler sent me here. Nicely done.
Tom Petty was a genius and The Heartbreakers were one of the greatest American bands. On all levels; from performing to playing to recording to writing, TP and The Heartbreakers were standouts from first song to last.
Jamie's right on, no bad albums here.
1. Damn the Torpedoes
2. Wildflowers
3. Southern Accents
4. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
5. Hard Promises
6. Long After Dark
7. You're Gonna Get It!
8. Full Moon Fever
9. Into the Great Wide Open
10. Echo
Wildflowers was originally going to be a double album, so there's that. And while I do love Louisiana Rain, I can't help but start singing CCR's Who'll Stop The Rain when I hear it. Ha
Regarding the Echo album Tom was going through the breakup of his first marriage , depression and recovering from heroin issues . His house fire episode took place over a decade earlier in May 1987. Band member Howie Epstein had a heroin problem at the time of recording and failed to show up for the album photo shoot .
A very good album nonetheless.
Room at the Top off Echo is my favorite Petty song ever. My brother actually chose it as his wedding song and the band he had never heard it before and had to learn it. The entire band ended up loving that song. From what I read, the song really bothered Tom on a personal level and he stopped playing it on that tour. Gwyneth Paltrow actually begged him to play it at the show she went to and he still didn’t play it.
The Wildflowers reissue demonstrates that Petty could have actually issued a volume 2 in addition to still leaving outtakes for She's the One. Both volumes would have been in my top 5 !
This was a great show. I fist saw Petty in 86 (I think) when he was the opening act and back up band for Dylan. Got to see him a few more times as well and each show was nothing short of great. I don't think I could come up with a list due to my love of the entire catalog. I would have loved to have heard what Simon may have had as a top 5. That is if "Uncle Simon the Invincable" is a fan
Pete, I hear you recently found the T.P. album catalogue at a used record store and got them on the cheap.
You also once described T.P. as a best of band, so looks like a video is reason enough to give them a chance.
Got them at a bunch of different places actually.

Agree with Pete, American Girl never did anything for me. I was surprised, however, that Wildflowers was #10. We're all different of course and have diffferent taste, but for me it's his strongest work. It's magical to me. Cool 🤠
So many bands if you ask Pete a few years ago he wouldn't have said no not a fan don't want to listen to them
Although his mind has been open to some great stuff he's missed I'm willing to lay a bet though he will never become a Ramones fan😂😂
I had a similar experience to Pete with Petty. I came late to the Petty Party in the early 2000's. I think it's both to do with what I was into (heavier less commercial stuff), and the fact that I liked his singles but didnt love them. However I was exposed to Full Moon Fever and knew it was an amazing Pop/Rock album. Some day a late night WDHA DJ played the deep cut "You Tell Me". I immediately purchased "Damn the Torpedos" the next day. Been down the Petty road ever since.
I have everything through "Into the Great Wide Open" along with "Echo," so I'll be interested to see where the ones I don't own fall.
Ah, so the solo work is included too. I don't own "Highway Companion" either.

I love Tom Petty. Impossible to rank. Love all the albums. My least favorite is Into the Great Wide Open, and my favorite is Damn the Torpedoes.
Wildflowers is my fav but yes, Long After Dark is one I have a soft spot for.
I was Barney Rubble! Has anyone watched the 6 hour Running Down a Dream documentary. Every band should have a documentary that in-depth and amazing.
I miss Tom Petty, him & the Heartbreakers always put on a great show. Tom is such a great song writer & their all great musicians.
