    I agree with Pete on retiring from live shows. I also suffer from the “cranky old man” syndrome. I don’t like crowds, long lines, and insanely loud music.

    I agree 100% with Pete about the lyrics. Most are cheesy, or just love/break-up songs, very few have a real message about the human condition, politics, history, ethical concerns, etc etc ...... For me, it's all about the music on 99% of songs.

    The thing I love about these chats, is the way my agreement and disagreement sways back and forth ....... One minute I'm thinking, "Geez Martin/Pete, do you even have ears, how can you possibly think that?" Then the next topic, I'm "Absolutely spot on, it's like you can read my mind." 🤣

    Also though I'm not that much younger, I missed out on/side stepped all the early rock bands so Pete's deep dives have been a real education. Thank you.

Martin is the only person who could have completely the opposite opinion about Captain Beefheart (for instance) to me but I still love him for it because of his knowledge and enthusiasm. Popoff and Pardo are at it again and this time answering the Q's submitted by those of us who watch. As always, an enjoyable episode with some interesting, shared thoughts from Martin and Pete. Did they pick my question? No. Do I know why? Yes, they did an episode on the topic about 6 months ago which obviously needs to be rewatched? Were the responded to interesting? Yes. Will they do an episode like this again? Let's hope so. Thanks, gents, for an always entertaining time. There ya go!

    Very entertaining episode!
    Maybe the point Martin was trying to make is that music was more interesting when bands were still trying to figure it out and discovering new genres than today when bands know exactly what works and doing it perfectly. It's more fun to listen to the rough edges of pioneers than pristine refinement of people imitating them.

    Pete and Martin, thanks for the Q&A show and a big thanks for answering my question about how many albums you own and how many you’ve heard.
    Regarding the latter, I completely understand where you both are coming from. Adding to your point Pete, the number of albums you have NOT reviewed and are NOT in your collection is another consideration. And with the partial thing, I meant listening to an album from start to finish or having heard all the songs in whatever order but that was still an interesting point.
    I guess I didn’t think that part of the question was unreasonable initially because I keep a spreadsheet of the albums I’ve listened to in my lifetime. Unless I’ve missed a few, the count is currently at 484 so a tiny fraction of what you guys have heard but I’ll get there eventually, I’m only 25 😄.

    Great show. Enjoyed hearing Martin talk about those bands we discovered during our peak-rock years, who made a seminal impact on us. For me that's gonna be Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Who, Sabbath, and later UFO, Priest, Iron Maiden, WASP, Slayer and King Diamond. But I've discovered other bands along the way that I really like, and they've secured a very strong personal place in my rock pantheon: Ghost, Immortal, Six Feet Under, and, interestingly, Rammstein and Disturbed.

    David Sylvain in both Japan/Rain Tree Crow and solo is such a distinctive and talented artist. His lyrics definitely lead me to believe he would be an intelligent interview. I was also a huge fan of fretless bassist Mick Karn (RIP) in Japan which gave their sound a great wobbly, elastic tone. Glad to hear that he was that impressive when Martin interviewed/heard him.

    This discussion was frankly amazing! I can't believe I missed this one for 6 months, but I did. What Pete and Martin said about concerts I can agree with. I have seen big acts, but now, if I were to go to a concert, it will be smaller but WAY more brutal bands. Death Metal has been huge since 2020 for me, thus I would love to see: Bloodbath, Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Nile, Soilwork, Gojira, Cannibal Corpse and I would love see Faith No More live at least once. I think they are done frankly, and I love Mike Patton, but if they are done, they are done. None of the other bands listed here are close to done, so I would see them. The last time I was at a concert was...........6 fucking years ago and there were some rude people, no doubt. I hate that....

    Clear Spot's my fave Beefheart, but whenever anyone finds Trout Mask a bridge too far I always think: oh yeah, what about Neon Meate Dream Of A Octafish - can't knock that one!
    but Martin's comments about concerts calls to mind another Trout Mask song, When Big Joan Sets Up, with its immortal lines: "I'll set up with ya, Big Joan. I'm too fat to go out in the daylight" :)

    like Martin, my HS graduation was June 1981.
    Top 3 fave albums then were most likely:
    Harold Budd & Brian Eno - Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror
    Brian Eno - Another Green World
    Bela Bartok - Concerto For Orchestra (Kubelik/Boston SO/1974 DG)
    eternally grateful to critic Lou Stathis for getting me into Eno (I'm also the rare person who came to David Bowie albums via Eno).
    1980-1981 was my big prog year, so Robert Fripp was my main guitar hero. post-punk (e.g. guitarists like John McGeoch and Bruce Gilbert) and krautrock would take over later that year. and Peter Hammill would by far become my main prog hero.
    Bartok had been a fave since 1979, plus I even enjoyed King Crimson tracks like Fracture and Providence in a similar way to Bartok-listening.

    • @maddysmith8846
      @maddysmith8846 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s great to see John McGeogh get a mention, thank you. He’s never mentioned on any of the SOT shows apart from I think possibly once (by Chuck Alvarez?) but then again, Siouxsie and the Banshees don’t get mentioned either. I guess Juju is considered his classic contribution but A Kiss in the Dreamhouse will always be my favourite Siouxsie album. I wasn’t disappointed by Hyaena and Robert Smith makes a great contribution. Peter Hammill is a genius and he doesn’t seem to get a fair rap on In The Prog Seat either VDGG or solo. I know Pete is ok with Peter’s vocals and VDGG but almost none of the others are. PH has one of the great rock voices, what you get is what he feels. I would love for an album ranking, even though it would be a long one. I recently picked up the 2006 digital remaster of 1977’s Over (3 bonus tracks) perfect. Bartók, now then, that’s a rabbit hole and a half to go down!, very rewarding.

    • @paulgkennedy
      @paulgkennedy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks Maddy! even though I heard Siouxsie first (The Scream album and Hong Kong Garden single, in summer 1981), it was through Magazine that I first came to love McGeoch's playing. and Martin reps for Secondhand Daylight fairly regularly here. Correct Use Of Soap's my fave.
      A Kiss In The Dreamhouse is my fave Siouxsie album too but I was disappointed by Hyaena (except for Swimming Horses, Belladonna and maybe Dazzle). I suspect Robert Smith spread himself too thin around then and I expected The Cure to become a better band based on the strength of the likes of The Upstairs Room and Throw Your Foot. though I do love Birdmadgirl and am fond of The Glove collab.
      I find VDGG more consistently interesting than the other prog bands and love Peter Hammill's solo albums. plus he's one of the guys who went from prog to post-punk early on. I also love The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome.
      in 1980 I was really into Peter Gabriel's 3rd album but it didn't hold up for me (No Self Control is a good bonkers single though!).
      after I'd posted my 3 fave albums c. June 1981 I realized it didn't reflect two of my absolute fave artists at the time: Syd Barrett and Robert Wyatt. I hadn't found a copy of Rock Bottom yet, so Wyatt is on the strength of 3LP comp Triple Echo, a great introduction to Soft Machine.
      hearing Wire - 154 in Fall 1981 was a game changer! @@maddysmith8846

    • @maddysmith8846
      @maddysmith8846 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulgkennedy Thank you for sharing the info and that’s a good point about Peter Hammill’s early move to punk / new wave sounding. I really haven’t listened to any of his more recent 2000s albums., it would be good for a ranking show! I wanted to ask if you listened to Siouxsie and Budgie’s Creatures records (I didn’t but for no particular reason I can remember) and given your thoughts on Robert Smith, did you buy Nocturne live album? I think I had it on tape cassette (taped off someone’s record of course!). I’ve always thought Dear Prudence a fantastic cover, it’s not easy to do justice to Lennon-McCartney but I think they nailed it, I even prefer the Banshees version. I felt a bit mixed about Siouxsie’s Mantaray, though the album cover is divine and may be time to revisit it and I wish she had recorded more solo stuff. The Softs get a bit of love from Pete Pardo, particularly with Holdsworth but I think the 3rd is hard to beat.

    Like you Pete, I have always struggled with developing an interest in rock lyrics. Much of the time I've never been able to even understand what the hell they are saying. For example, if you listen to the Warren Zevon song, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner from the Excitable Boy album, the song ends with the line: "From here to Johannesburg." But to me it sounds like he's saying: "And buried old Hannah's bird." But it's a great song and I really don't care what he's talking about, I care about listening to the guitar phrases and the rhthyms and riffs of the music and having the vocals serve as complementary to the overall sound of the song. If I want poetry and meaning I'll stick to Robert Frost. Sure, the Beatles and Dylan wrote lyrics that one might call compelling and worthy of being characterized as "literature," but they also wrote nonsensical lines as if to poke a finger in the eye of sycophantic acolytes frothing about and hanging on every word. Please. Just give me the music.

    As far as music genres, Rap gives me diarrhoea. I’ve always thought rappers are essentially people who don’t have the talent to sing, so they talk their lyrics. Hard pass from me.
    I guess the other thing I really can’t cop, are the Cookie Monster vocals of death metal. If you are sounding like you are trying to pass a kidney stone, yeah no thanks 😂

    I went to see The Nightingales the other night over near my folks house at a venue that we used to play a lot, a sub venue, when we had a band 85-92. It was great - about 50 people there. I have always despised the idea of 'arena' gigs and only ever went to one and I didnt like it( I have been to a lot of festivals but not since the late 90's - apart for a couple of small ones 1000 people type size). I still regularly go to gigs but only to small venues, locally - so Brighton through to Southampton. I briefly looked at getting tickets to Judas Priest and then thought nah 'I would hate the whole arena thing' plus it's too expensive. I got to 6 gigs for the price of 1 arena ticket. I saw a great band from Atlanta, GA in Brighton the other months 'Starbenders' and there were no more than 50 people there (check them out - excellent rock band)

      This is my take as well. Words will never triumph over the actual music. I will never say that i love a song purely because it has great lyrics. The music always comes first. Lyrics can be an added bonus if they really hit home for me. And sometimes the lyrics might not even be all that great but they go along great with the music which makes them more enjoyable.

    As the new Blood Ceremony album says, the old ways do remain. It's entirely possible for bands to record stuff in any way they want now, and a computer can just be a tool to record and organise tracks, do equalisation, mixing and so on -- or you could use it more extensively. It's a creative choice and definitely a lot of bands in the fields of music Sea of Tranquility covers (and I do mean 21st century bands) don't go in for the over-production and autotuning and having producers use the many shortcuts that software can provide.
    Speaking for myself, I think having the whole history of rock 'n' roll behind you is kind of a good thing. I think about it less in a genre-oriented fashion -- less "how can we create the perfect rock 'n' roll album" and more, "what's our individual thing that we do and how can we be the best at that?" Even bands that appear derivative on the surface usually have got *something* individualistic about them that makes them stand out a bit, whether you notice and like that thing or not.

    Great guitar tone to me is that Smashing Pumpkins big muff sound. It's just fun to play and sounds good and heavy but in an alternative way, not metal which doesn't have enough good tone, example would be almost all Metallica albums except Ride & Master.

    To the question about valuing lyrics ... Judas Priest wouldn't have many fans, lol. This is the case about liking the music. They have some real cheesy lyrics and sexual inuendo lines. Even the title for the album "Ram it down"... One of my favorite bands. But their lyrics is not what got me into their music.
    Great show as always 🤘🤘

    Lyrics? I'm also not too bothered about what the lyrics are. But back in early 70s my mum must have been a bit bothered about the bands I was listening to and what they were singing about. 😂 Humble Pie for instance with such lines as 'she shoots cocaine in that thing she calls an arm'! Brilliant! Must have been penned by Steve Marriott!

    Well Martin, I understand about the overweight thing. I have the upmost respect for your knowledge and sensibilities of music and the open minded analysis of metal music throughout history. And if there is one thing that undoes all that work and credibility is when I see my most respected journalists at live shows and they are 10kgs overweight round the belt buckle, then it’s all over.
    Their words meant nothing.

    Wow! Martin talking about Sylvian; impressive; and Beefheart top 3 lyricist; enlightening. Pete's Beatles song choices, similar although I prefer "Tomorrow Never Knows" over "She Said". I intentionally purchased a car with a CD player last year. Concert gripes!? You both sound like old men... A lot of bands of a certain era are indeed "aging out". Very good questions. Well worth a Part 2.

      A David Sylvian ranking the albums or an album choice for discussion on ITPS is overdue, but who would do the show…? On Beatles, I’ll go Tomorrow Never Knows too, it showed exactly where they were headed after Revolver. Also Let It Be, Get Back, and Penny Lane and Eleanor Rigby. My dad still has a car with a CD player - yeah! A band definitely not aging out live but just getting better and better - Marillion.
