  • This extra large and extra custom cutting board is made out of walnut and maple. It's dimensions are 18" x 21" x 2" and weighs nearly 20 lbs. (9 kg.) If you'd like a detailed explanation on my process of how I put this board together, the first video link below will take you there.
    Enjoy the show!
    Ryan
    **This pattern is not my original creation. It belongs to @mtmwood who has plans for the 13"x13" version available for purchase through his website.

    I love the "randomly cut" looking pieces comes together and suddenly turns into a master piece. I bet it took a lot of planing and calculating. Great work!!!

    I usually don’t watch “silent” woodworking builds but I just finished watching some yahoo’s 1 hr, 15 min video of math and building cutting boards and math and discussing the woodworking business and math, so I needed this. 😂
    Loved the build and I finally understand how one is made after being confused with other’s videos and some cutting board design software. Thanks!

    What really sets this video apart is the time you invested to hold our hands through the construction process. I would imagine creating the video - shooting, editing, music selection - may have taken more time than designing, assembling and finishing the cutting boards themselves. The one question I have is this: at 5:57 of this video, why do you freehand cut one side without a sliding guide to guarantee a dead straight line, considering every other edge surface was either sanded or cut using one? Thanks for showing us how this is done!

    • @ryanhawkins
      @ryanhawkins  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right, it did take longer to do all that stuff than to build the board itself.😉 Reason I freehand at that part of the process is because I don’t have a long enough guide to feed that 22” long panel through. I’m also not too worried about this particular cut being perfect as it will eventually be flipped up into an end grain strip and any imperfections taken care of during the flattening process with the router sled. Glad you enjoyed it!

    This is amazing! I just finished my very first cutting board (checkerboard), and I'm extremely disappointed because all of the squares don't match up perfectly. While I was doing the glue-up, it was hard to move the pieces around because they got stuck to each other really fast.
    Did your cutting boards always look this good, even when starting? I've been doing woodworking for about eight months and feel like I'm failing to meet the standards I want.

    Hey Ryan, I sent you a message on your other video you made on this board. Would like to know how you did the math to increase the size of the finish board from the original plans? I’m looking to make mine 18” x 18”, just want to know how much do I need to add to the thickness of the strips in the first glue up’s and so on. Thanks for the help and keep up the amazing work and videos,

    I didn't see the first video until now on how you calculated the amount of wood required to create a larger board. I went out and purchased a piece of walnut lumber yesterday to create this same board, but I don't think that it's enough to make one this size. So you really need almost eight feet of 8" wide boards??
