I´m not a woodworker myself but enjoy this more explanatory video a lot. More than the short version. It gives deeper insight in your great work and I can say only "Thank you, Sir!" for the effort you´re putting in this vids!
Beautiful work, video and presentation. You are a natural teacher. Your camera positions are very good to help with the understanding of what you are doing. Thank you.
Thank you for making this version with added tips. It almost makes me think I might be able to make one, though I'm generally way too impatient for this type of thing. ('Swhy I'm primarily a woodturner. :) ) Tip - to prevent the wood from sliding against each other when clamping, drop a few (literally 3-5) grains of salt into the glue joint before joining the wood. The salt crystals don't interfere with the glue joint and are sharp enough to dig into the wood on either side, preventing them from sliding. (Sugar isn't sharp enough.)
+mtmwood I've not read about anything of the sort in any book, but then I don't read many books. (Can't tell you the last time I built something from plans... just design it in my head & revise as I go.) I got the tip from an old guy in my turning club. Thinking about it, while either should work to keep the boards from sliding around, I think I'd prefer the salt for two reasons. It would probably dissolve from the moisture in the glue before it sets and wouldn't dull blades as much as bits of sand embedded in the wood should you hit them while cutting.
Congratulations and Happy 3rd year anniversary on You Tube! Your beautifully designated end grain construction for cutting boards and other projects is excellent! The extra time and effort you take to make the videography and instructions is very much appreciated. Thank you!
Thanks for the great work. Having just retired, I now plan on making this board. I will send photos. By the way, the "small shop helpers" are a kick to watch, they remind me of those assisting in my shop :-)
Thanks for the video and the free plans! I've been watching your videos with my father and I think this design of yours will be the one we will try to make at home. Happy anniversary, keep your content and your good editing coming!
Goodnight. Could you tell me the length of the strips on the first and second panel? Congratulations on the incredible work. I will definitely buy the plans.
Quick note to anyone planning to make this: I made this recently, but I increased the measurements so that my board would end up at 18” rather than 12”. I did this by adding 7mm to each measurement listed for each strip in both panels. The finished product was correct in that everything matched up perfectly. However, by increasing the width of each strip, the finished board doesn’t look near as good (it’s the very thin width strips that really make the illusion stand out. I mean you can see the pattern, but the width I added makes the illusion of all the sides caving toward the center harder to notice. Again, it looks decent, and the illusion is there, but next time I will stay with the original measurements. I hope this is helpful to someone.
Always love your how to guides. Can we have a " How to make an end grain cutting board just using a tennent saw " as than s all I have :D .Can't wait for the next vid
Beautiful work. I am thinking of building this cutting board. I am very concerned with the strips shifting when I clamp them. Does the time elapsed while assembling the board give the glue enough grip that if one is careful the pieces don't shift. I think I will just do four or five at a time. Many years ago I built a herringbone tray. The author recommended using dowels between strips to avoid shifting when clamping. Have you done that?
I have run the first few strips through the drum sander but the sander takes more material from Peruvian walnut than from eastern maple, leaving scalloped finish. There are slight dips in the walnut. Do you know how to prevent this? I have been putting strips through straight, should they instead go in at an angle? I see you use a slight angle, I will try this.
Once again Andrei a great video. I have a couple of questions. 1 whats does NB! mean? I guess 'attention' 2. in the drawings, the boards are 300x 317, when you were cutting the wood the wood looked like it was 900mm long, were you just cutting both boards then cutting then in half? great Andrei... I hope your wife and sons are doing well!!!
Hello can you tell me why apply the hot oil and beeswax after a coat of oil... is it for the sheen level of the beeswax... or is there something else thanks
good afternoon your website to buy the plans not well I can say the brand of oil that gives your tables in the green container and how many hours your tables remain
I'm lost. I can't figure out what cuts are done at the band saw and how they fit together. To me there is a big step between the first glue up and the second glue up that I just can't envision. And I "think" there are just a couple cuts. But I can't tell what they are. Can someone help me? I want to understand this.

+Derek Dalton I made the vases some years ago. I did not make a video about this. The other items are shown.
Wonderful work, my friend!!
have you ever done a tutorial on how to design a cutting board in sketchup? love your work and I like to design just as much as build.
+Rhythm House Drums No. I know only basics of SketchUp.
Exelent 💪👏👏👏
Great!!!
I wish we could have made cool stuff like that in high school shop class .. :-/

Could this be possible with out the drum sander? Thank you

great Andrei... I hope your wife and sons are doing well!!!
+Patrick Melchior NB (Nota bene - note well) means "very important". I make 750-800 mm panels and get finally 4-5 boards. Thanks!
So the final dimensions are like 300mm x 317mm… how long do the pieces you’re starting with need to be?
Do you go straight from the glue up into the planner? Isn't there a chance for it to not be flat due to the glue?
Hello can you tell me why apply the hot oil and beeswax after a coat of oil... is it for the sheen level of the beeswax... or is there something else thanks

My planer is 12.5 inches. can I simply simply cut the outside strips a little smaller?
Yes, of course. This will not affect the pattern
Does you table saw leave a good surface to immediately glue? Thank you.
+Dan Ridley No, I rotate each strip 90 degree - th-cam.com/video/nbT5kLmbN6s/w-d-xo.html
+mtmwood ok. So there is no need to use a jointer because you used a planer before the table saw? Correct?
+Dan Ridley Right. This saves the woods, time and work.
What grit paper are you running on your vertical sander that you use for edge sanding the boards?
+Scott Kaye 100.
hi i would like to get some of your plans. the site isn't showing them......thank you

Why are the first CAD drawings 317x317 and the second drawings 330x327? The second drawings would be 14.5" and would not work with a 13" plane
R the plans still free?
