The Ruy Lopez (Spanish) Exchange variation isn't so popular among top-level grandmasters these days, but the opening variation has some deep underlying strategic ideas resulting from the early bishop-for-knight trade on c6.

Good game! I've never made it into the endgame in the Ruy Exchange, so I never knew that exchanging queens gave such an advantage here. Very instructive.

At 15:20 my choice would probably have been Na4. Forcing his b pawns to free the c5 square for my knight. After kd4, organizing space and a passer, i guess the ending makes more fun to play for white. :-P

Isn't it a BIG mistake to castle in the ruy lopez exchange without playing h3? After bishop in g4 white should have some problem from what I remember
That was great! Thanks Eric. How were you able to calculate that the queenside pawn structures were locked down so easily? I'd have stared at that for an hour and still been none the wiser!
Hmm, I guess I see you calculate at 20:40, but I still don't know if I'd see that.
It wasn't actually a matter of calculating. It was more just a matter of knowing that the crippled 4-pawn majority can't forcingly create a passer against the 3-pawn minority. It helps to play out a bunch of scenarios and see for yourself.

Best bowling game was 277 and getting a 700+ patch (3 games in a match equaling over 700).
However after getting 9 strikes in a row I could hardly walk and decided I’d sooner get a hole in one golfing than ever going perfect game bowling.
Probably left a split and missed spares under pressure.
Btw, realized I was just a bowling hack when my 199 average was

The guy hung on for almost 60 moves, and Eric had to think for quite a while before he found the winning plan--that's not so "easy".

Actually, that person's rating is "unknown"--that's why there's a question-mark next to it. It's a provisional rating.
Considering that Black managed to stay close to equality for a long time, and didn't commit any gross blunders, my guess is he's quite a bit stronger than 1675.
I think it is little impolite to premove in a rapid game during the opening phase of the game.
I agree, it's just overly aggressive.
Sorry if it came across that way... I guess it's just an innate reaction to premove any obvious re-capture.
