  • So you want to make your own DIY solar power system… Here’s what you should know! I’ve just built my own off-grid system - and yes I’ll have a full video on exactly how I did it - so I’m in a good position to run down the main things you should know, starting with the biggest one: grid-tie or off-grid.

A few things I got wrong here - the two abbreviations, "DNO" and "SEG" are actually "Distribution Network Operators" and "Smart Export Guarantee". As part of my writing and research I read someone quoting both incorrectly and didn't think to question it. Apologies! Also, if you are going to build your own battery pack (which as I said in the video I do not recommend) you should use proper protected tools. That's a do as I say not as I do, I know, but still.

Great seeing like-minded folk doing this, I did a very similar install but ESS, never done it before but I installed 4.5kw solar to my shed, same power run to house armoured cable, ZigBee rs485 coms from energy meter, a full victron ESS system, 14.5kwh pylontech batterys, and a 1 kw 48v airforce wind turbine, £11k invested payback under 4 years mabys sooner when we cross the £1 per kWh threshold! Most days I use less than 1kwh from grid all electric house, it's a joy looking at the victron VRM app seeing live usage, production and consumption and all the stats, DIY solar, this is the future

@@stewartj00701 I did much the same but just the solar front - it uses the zigbee and energy meter to maintain zero export - just got an electrician to wire in the meter and the AC on the garage circuit as I was a bit nervous about that; works great! even use it to charge the car solely off of sunshine!

I've seen what can happen when you short out the battery. There wasn't much left of the spanner and the fitter spent the afternoon in hospital having his eyes checked. Please use insulated tools! On-grid is not an option for a DIY solution. The DNO will prosecute you if you connect without an MCS certificate and a G98 form B.

I live in a valley lined with hydro dams producing dirt cheap electricity, but I still plan on installing solar. Solar and wind are much better sources of energy in respect to minimal environmental damage when compared to hydro. We can free the fishies by 2100 with proper solar and wind investment :D

This is interesting, currently looking at getting solar and storage installed at home, payback will be so much faster with prices sky rocketing. A DIY solution is a great idea to pickup the base load though. Thanks for the explanation vid

    A couple of safety tips:
Make sure your ground wires are insulated. Especially around areas you would use a wrench. I learned the hard way!
Also never touch the positive and negative of your battery bank at the same time, especially if it’s a 48 V system or higher! It can kill you dead!

48 Volts won't kill you via an electric shock but will go up with a big bang......

Aren't your cardboard corners cutting into you solar output by a small amount? It looks like they are covering a small portion of your cells. I just setup my own off grid sytem. I just used solar generators instead of a batteries and inverters. I have six 200 watt panels on a trailer for mobility and a four 200 watt panel ground array that I plan to put wheels on to make mobile too. I live in a part of Arizona that gets 292 full solar days. I moved here seven weeks ago and I have run my gaming computer and my work laptop with two monitors completely on solar. I also run my refrigerator, coffee pot, and microwave (for short burst) too. Since I still have extra capacity to start the next day, I'm looking for other appliances to plug in.

The white cover is not a cable entry gland. its a cable entry cover, very different to a gland witch you will need for the armoured cable, you need to terminate and earth the armouring of the cable at each end and that is done with the cable entry gland.

Renters use Micro Grid Tie Inverters, with export limiter, if their DNO is being fussy.

Electrical tape on a screwdriver does not make it an insulated screwdriver. Just in case anyone got that impression. Also never work live it it can possibly avoided, only the battery connections are not isolatable in this case.

lol an idiot with just enough information to be dangerous 🤣 yes indeed
you definitely have to be careful, that battery setup with non insulated tools, can be deadly with a tiny slip up. dont do what he did. if he'd dropped the wrench a big arc of electricity, probably fire and or explosion.
ya need to secure and insulate the batteries, you dont want to short them for any reason.
otherwise good video, it's always good to go renewable. lets hope your roi comes sooner than later on that setup.
