Correct observation, YourPlug. Also, may I include personally, southpaw boxers such as me who study one of the most underrated champion boxers, Ronald “Winky” Wright are watching and studying this awesome fight. Ronald “Winky” Wright is fundamentally sound, strong, has an excellent jab, and is defensively responsible (peek-a-boo/high guard defense). Eventually, Jermaine Taylor’s (excellent champion) weakness of keeping his hands down caused him to get knocked out by King Arthur Abraham. Not a coincidence, but Arthur Abraham utilized the same peek-a-boo/high guard defense. Abraham’s vicious power resulted in JT getting knocked out in the 12th round of their bout in the Super Six.
I remember watching this and thinking to myself, "Both of these guys will never be the same". It was so beautifully violent to watch. You could make an argument that Kelly Pavlich was the biggest beneficiary of the beatdown Wright inflicted upon the young Taylor. (And that was why I had money on him to win a year later). And on the other side, Wright was never hit this hard, by a naturally bigger man. Not by Mosley, Vargas or anyone else. This was really the end of his run as a Top P4P candidate. It was brutal, it was breathtaking, and God bless both of these two warriors and keep them safe in the future.
Lol damn you had me at the first sentence. Then at the second I was like ok I got it now. Then the third and fourth and then BAM the fifth and I'm like all confused now
I believe Wright won 115-113, but his strategy in the shockingly dull 12th cost him the bout. Regardless of how well the fight had gone through 11, Winky was experienced enough to realize that in the champion's backyard he needed to take last round convincingly.
This was one of the greatest middleweight fights in modern history. Both these guys are phenomenal fighters, hall of fame caliber. Each round was so competitive, tough to score - Draw probably right decision

Too me, I scored the first 115-113 for Winky but I was ok with a draw. Winky should've been proud of his performance as he took it to a bigger, stronger much harder punching opponent. He needs to realize that if he did win it was close and by taking the last round off he cost himself the fight. He would've won on the Melvina Levthan scorecard and won the fight. I guess coming with a draw in a second fight he thought he clearly won, maybe he thought luck was going to be on his side.
Which is surprising because in 1994 Winky lost his first title shot against Julio Cesar Vasquez by going out and fighting. He was ultimately overpowered by Vasquez and dropped 5 times. In some of the rounds Winky was landing his jab and straight left, but when he didn't hurt Vasquez and Vasquez started walking through Winky's punching and knocked Winky down once in the 2nd, 7th, 9th and twice in the 12th. In those rounds Winky started slugging with Vasquez. Had there been more time in the 12th Vasquez would've stopped Winky. Here though, Winky took some big punches from Taylor and never backed down and never appeared hurt.
Winky was known for his legendary defensive. He kept getting better later on in his career. He was a very bad style fighter for many of the top 10 fighters in the divisions he fought in. Even was avoided for more then 10 first years of his career for that reason. He was a nightmare
Only reason this fight is so underrated with views is because both men, more so jermaine taylor were not highly promoted. It has to be against a big name for people to view it. But true boxing fans no this fight was as big.
what a robbery, wright clearly won 1-5, Taylor won 6 and 7, wright got 8, Taylor 9 then wright 10-12, very clear wright blocked 90% of Taylors shots and landed very clean jabs on Taylor throughout the fight and pushed him around the ring, defence striking and ring generalship very clearly went to wright for majority of the fight, and if u believe in compubox stats, wright landed 60 more punches whilst throwing 60 less shots, including more powershots. A big thing people aren't realising is that in round 12, winky landed a few shots at the beginning of the round then nether party actually landed anything whilst Taylor proceeded to get a few shots blocked and dodged, people act as if winky was inactive when in reality he held onto the round by defending himself after landing the first shots.
Not only 2 of the very best fighters in the sport at the time, but also 2 of the nicest. . . Yes, I know about Taylor's outside the ring issues, but he was always a gentleman in the ring and in the interviews, always respectful. He was troubled, for sure, but deep down he was a nice dude
Taylor landed some good shots, but a lot of the shots he was getting credit for were taken on Winky's guard. It goes to show that simply throwing more punches is usually more eye catching than defending them. It's a shame that judges don't have a way to see what truly lands, and what doesn't. This was another Winky defensive masterpiece, but he was relatively unknown compared to Taylor at the time, and Taylor had the more appealing style. Personally, I love watching Winky. He was a walking textbook of how to utilize a high guard in professional boxing. He probably had the most versatille high guard I have ever seen. The way he used subtle adjustments with his guard to catch punches, and parry while using head movement only as a last barrier of entry made his defense like a walking fortress. That's not even considering his counter punching which was more offensive than most because he usually counter punched while moving forward instead of waiting and setting traps. Such a unique fighter. It's no wonder why so many guys avoided fighting him, and it's a shame. He easily could have been one of the absolute greats of the sport, but he was still great non the less.
