Steve Kim said something about Winky Wright being a great example of what an underappreciated fighter can accomplish, if he stays active & fights the best available competition. Winky's dedication & activity early in his career turned him into a star, & provided the platform for him to land many big fights later on.
I always forget what a great fight this was. Beautiful boxing by Winky, and great athleticism by Taylor. I was rooting for Winky when it happened, but I think a draw is fair here. I've seen far worse decisions. Great fight!

I was at this fight. It was a closely contested bout but I recall having Wright as the winner. I never saw Oscar or Trinidad fight live but I'm comfortable with the fact I saw the 2 best fighters at this time in the sport. I also remember seeing Lennox Lewis and Floyd from my seat.
Taylor was a shooting star!! Beating the great elusive Bernard Hopkins twice, when Hopkins was at his peak..but Hopkins stole The great Jermaine's soul, and he was never the same.
Yea Pavlik is the one who set him up to his path of self destruction. Jermain Taylor was mere seconds away from finishing Pavlik in that first fight too he had him hurt bad! Had he won that fight and not been brutally knocked out there wouldn’t have been a rematch and Taylor would have moved on with his belt, who knows how his career would have turned out then. More importantly who knows how his life would have turned out not being KO’d so badly ultimately leading to his mental decline. Probably wouldn’t be sitting in Pulaski County correctional facility right now, where he seems to spend the majority of his time over the last several years
This was an excellent fight, I still score it the same as I did when I first seen it! 116-112 Winky Wright.... No doubt he won this fight, he outboxed Taylor and landed more punches! Taylor did land the harder shots tho!.........Winky didn't really want the rematch, cause he wanted a 50/50 in the money and challengers don't get that unless your the bigger name!
Yea Winky wasn't very smart when it came to business. He should have taken the rematch and beaten Taylor again. He messed his own career up at the end.
Can't believe Winky had a reputation for being a boring fighter. I loved watching him fight and he should get alot of credit for moving to 160 and taking the fight to Taylor here.
Me too. I think if he had a little more bounce in his feet and used more angles; he would of been even more tough to beat. He was a little too flat footed at times. But overall a great fighter.
Wow. What a fight. This just came on auto play and i was half paying attention the first couple of rounds then it got so good i had to restart it so i could fully pay attention to the whole thing. Thanks for sharing.
You have to look at the fight closer because Winky was blocking a lot of those shots that the commentator was praising coming from Taylor that why Emanuel said you probably gave him the fight ....Winky Wright all day...but great fight.
Now that I watched this fight twice I can see why they called it a draw, winky landed more shots to me but I think Taylor was winning the judges over with all them power shots. Plus some rounds he would try to win with bunches of punches and we all know that does win rounds. But I was team winky no matter what
For some reason this has always been one of my favorite fights, even though there wasn't a "winner" (Winky won this one). I'm about to watch again. haha

Winky is one tough sob. He never should have fought at 160, he was too small. But he did and was a beast. The only man I have ever seen with no power...but always putting the pressure on...
Winkie won this fight hands down....look at the face of Jermain compared to Winkie's....I don't think Jermain hit Winkie as much as the fight said....Winkie's defense is top notch, man
Not at all. I remember thus fight like it was yesterday. Underrated fight and these two deserved a ppv rematch. One of the most closest evened out fight I have seen. A draw most certainly deserved by both.
The commentators spoke of a eye contusion that wasnt even there on Winky, meanwhile the whole fight past with Jermaine T eye closed and they never said anything about it.
There is NOTHING worse than biased announcers singing the praises of one fighter, while downplaying the effectiveness of the other fighter. If Jermain Taylor's right hand was SO powerful, and SO consistently connecting, then WHY wasn't Winky Wright hurt or at least his face show visible signs of such devasting blows that were allegedly hitting their mark since the first round? Much of those "hard shots" by Taylor were on the arms and gloves of Winky Wright and granted, some got through. AND although Winky did not appear to be hurting Taylor, Wright was walking his opponent down, cornering him effectively, and connecting with good combinations and solid punches. AND the toll of those punches WAS VISIBLE on Taylor's face, namely with his left being eye closed. Nevertheless, it was a VERY close, hard-fought bout, with a lot of close rounds, and I thought the decision of the judges correctly reflected that.
thought winky won 5 of the final 6 rounds- 7,8,9, 11 and 12. Gave 10 to Taylor. One thing I don't understand is the announcers talking about the hard shots from Taylor but most are blocked. The cleaner hits were from winky. They never talk (until finally in round 12) about Taylor's eye damn near closed from being tattooed by Winky's jab all night long. Winky won in my opinion.
i dont know what these commentators or judges were seeing winky spanked taylor. Not only did winky land more punches but he came forward the whole fight. Also when taylor was throwing combos only 2 or 3 out of 8 would land winky landed the much cleaner punches. They screamed all night about taylors power, but who were they powerful too winky was never hurt stood in on the flurries and he moved forward the entire fight winky obviously didnt think or feel like taylor was as powerful as these commentators thought. Winky clearly outboxed him and ate all his punches easy. And lets not forget winky was the much smaller fighter.
Winky blocks 1-2 with high guard at 10.28. 4.24 Wright jabs to the body. Taylor short with a jab at 4:33. Jabs should be key here as it`s interesting to see someone use longer reach vs a good high guard type fighter and Winky`s key punch is the jab also.
I partially agree. I think these commentators were just wowed by Taylor's punching power. Although I'm not fond of the HBO commentators, I think they did a better job of calling it how they seen it. The only flaw was when punches didn't land, Jim Lampley said they did. A lot of Taylors punches bounced off Wrights gloves but Lampley gave Taylor credit anyway. I felt they gave Taylor a pretty fair shake it's just that Winky showed his experience & fought a smart fight & earned more of their favor.
The commentary is as bad I’ve ever heard! Wright is routinely forcing Taylor backwards and often scoring more with the cleaner shots… but all they can do is gawk at Taylor’s “power” despite most of them being blocked. Parker in particular; it feels like Taylor’s promoter must had someone slipping him a c-note under the table every time he said something positive about Jermaine’s power or it being the defining element of the bout.
A wise man once said the toughest style of opponent to fight is a counterpuncher who comes forward. GGG Mike Tyson Saul Alvarez Joe Frazier and many more including Ronald Winky Wright. Winky has lost a few in his career but none have ever had an easy time doing it.
A pressure fighter with impeccable defensive skills. Very odd mix and supremely difficult to deal with as such. Guys that come forward and cut you off are _supposed_ to be easy to hit, but that was SO not the case with Winky. I hope history gives Wright his just due. He never got the credit he deserved.
Don Johnson one other reason that made windy wright hard to hit was because of that right-handed jab. It's one of the best jabs in the business. His style reminds me of a pikeman. A big shield on his left hand and a pike on his right hand.
I would have to agree with the majority of the below comments. Winky was an incredible fighter, who was often ranked high in the pound 4 pound rankings. He got robbed here, as did Corey Spinks when he fought Taylor. Pavlik didn't give the guy the opportunity to rob him. Taylor was no doubt a good fighter, but his approach to certain fights always bothered me. Unfortunately Winky never got a rematch. Though he was for a few years after this fight ranked at the top of the division.
Jermain Taylor is universally regarded as one of the worst Middleweight Champions of all time that was a star boxer during his generation....Let's be real here....he somehow won alot of decisions, like this one in particular and got some kind of medal in Arkansas or wherever. Pavlik beat him up, he went to supersix tourney and got beat up again, he came back and won the title again and got beat up again.
mcentepede I don't think that is quite true. Taylor was talented but lacked heart. He beat bhop due to his youth and athletic ability. That's why he beat bhop. His footwork and initiative was a lot faster. Now back to what you said, Taylor won a title again two years ago. He was in the tourney but was damaged goods by then man. He was always exciting and gave everyone hell. I do think he would have beat Abraham before that time. Jermaine was good but not great. Thanks Taylor for some great fights.
winky won that fight hands down i dont know what they talking bout a draw yeah right winky wright was one of the best fighter in the world people didnt give his credit for real
5:16 No counter jab from the longer Taylor, you have to deal with Winky`s jab it was his main weapon and the counter from a longer reach is perfect against a high guard fighter with a sharp jab.
The announcers were the worst part of this. They made it like winky did nothing. Taylor's eye was shut afterwards. He hit winky with bricks the whole fight. Watch it with the commentary off. Both fighters are underrated on defense. Great fight by both.
That was the worst judging, commentating, and refereeing ive ever seen in boxing. More then anything tho was commentators. These guys actually seemed to be working for the Taylor camp, and completely bias? Unbelievable!
Emanuel said keep him in the center of the ring, hes only beating you when you're on the tops. Taylor was on the rops in every round. Winky landed the cleaner shots and he walked Taylor down although Taylor was throwing the more powerful shots alot only hit Winky gloves. Great fight I thought Winky edged the bout. Ijs
yeah from what I saw winky picked off the majority of those punches, and he was landing hard clean shots especially when he whipped that right hook to the body. Jermaine is flashy but isn't really landing anything clean.
Winky always used those gloves for his defense. Reyes, punchers gloves, were usually used by guys throwing big shots. You'll notice Mayweather never used puncher gloves either. He always used Grant gloves for the protection from what I understand
he used them for his hands they got damaged too much in some fights they were too fragile that's why he stopped throwing the hard shots he used to throw when he went by the "money" nickname
Will Grello I am from Florida and my best friend is from Arkansas. I remember watching this fight with him and his cousin who is also from Arkansas. When the final bell rung they was both super quiet. They knew Taylor had lost that fight. Soon as they ruled it a draw they was cheering. Taylor was an olympic medalist and just came off 2 decision wins off of Hopkins. I thought he lost the first Hopkins fight too.
5:27 They are not in punching range, Taylor should have constantly stayed in punching range and pumped the jab because his reach was longer so he would still be out of Winky`s range. Hearns v Wright would have been like this to a degree because he would have a reach advantage also. Counter left landed on Winky at 5:56.
I think Winky edged it out. Most of those shots by Taylor were blocked. Winky landed the cleaner shots and walked Taylor down most of the fight. But can't argue about the draw. Great fucking fight.
Winky Wright Vernon Forrest Paul Williams Mikkel Kessler Joe Calzaghe Are some of the most underated champions In boxing that nobody really talks about Nomore which is a shame Because these guys were really good In there day And most should know That some of these guys could Beat today's champions no doubt For example Joe Calzaghe would beat Carl Froch,James DeGale,The Dirrell Brothers, Just to name a few And also Winky Wright would give Jr Middleweights A run for there money Facing and beating guys like Austin Trout, and would give Canelo A Tough Test Paul Williams Vs Recently Stripped WBO Jr Middleweight Champion Andrade would be another good fight Kessler Vs GGG would be a good one As well
+Jesse Saucedo GGG would murder Kessler, well GGG would slaughter all others aswell and dont tell me Ward would beat GGG, because he is crying diva, cant wait til someone beats the shit out of him(Ward), so he can finally shut up, Ward is delusional, this is who he is, in my opinion(sorry I got pissed off, just hate Ward lol))......Winky was an animal though, I agree.....Calzaghe, clowning too much, but he was very good, i dont think he was that great though, despite his record.....
+Jesse Saucedo I personally see Joe Calzaghe as Britain's greatest ever fighter. Just arrived at the wrong time. Just after Toney, Benn, Eubank, Collins, ect and just before Froch, Groves, Degale and Ward. But he was sensational. No super-middleweight throws a 1000 punches a fight. Agree with Kessler too, the man was unbelievably tough
+Sergei P I understand why you may say Calzaghe wasn't great...but in his prime I think he'd still have beaten all others around now and before him. There was no blue-print to beat him, and he always found a way to win. Quick and if you check him out early in his career before the injuries VERY heavy handed.
I will check his earlier fights for sure!! Also, you are right, he had very high boxing IQ!! I have a question, how do you think, would Calzaghe be able to beat Andre Ward?
Don't know why but this is one of my favorite fights ever. Best draw I've ever seen.

Wright didn't get the regonition like that, but I do like his style, he left the boxing scene too early
Winky won that fight!
Hands down
really giving Taylor 5 was being generous really probably only 4
I reckon
Strong defense
Master defense
I thought Wright beat Taylor that night. My uncle and I were thinking Wright had the decision but you never know.
Nah
I thought so too
Well said
5:27 They are not in punching range, Taylor should have constantly stayed in punching range and pumped the jab because his reach was longer so he would still be out of Winky`s range. Hearns v Wright would have been like this to a degree because he would have a reach advantage also. Counter left landed on Winky at 5:56.
And just watch out for winkys combonations
Draw was a fair result. Very good fight
I think Winky edged it out. Most of those shots by Taylor were blocked. Winky landed the cleaner shots and walked Taylor down most of the fight. But can't argue about the draw. Great fucking fight.
@@MAMII-ks2qgtrue that
A hell of a good fight
Winky best!!!! Krasava!!!!!
Winky Wright
Vernon Forrest
Paul Williams
Mikkel Kessler
Joe Calzaghe
Are some of the most underated champions
In boxing that nobody really talks about
Nomore which is a shame
Because these guys were really good
In there day
And most should know
That some of these guys could
Beat today's champions no doubt
For example
Joe Calzaghe would beat
Carl Froch,James DeGale,The Dirrell Brothers,
Just to name a few
And also
Winky Wright would give Jr Middleweights
A run for there money
Facing and beating guys like
Austin Trout,and would give Canelo
A Tough Test
Paul Williams Vs Recently Stripped
WBO Jr Middleweight Champion
Andrade would be another good fight
Kessler Vs GGG would be a good one
As well
+John Starks
2
1 for me & you can keep the rest
Wright I think lost the first round bad and he danced to much in the last round but it was a hell of a fight hard to pick a winner the draw was fair!
I have winky by 2 points.
Same
Winky, by this time, had fought a few fights. And still couldn't get a pair of shorts that fit him.
Winky should of got the W 7-5. ?
Ikr
Winky got tagged pretty good in this fight!
+dave jackson then why is his face marked up with bruises? Nah bro, Taylor exposed Winky, I say it's a draw! They both tagged each other pretty good!
When Taylor's eye was swollen??
@@lnaf and what does that have to do with Winky still getting tagged?
Winky was robbed...very worst a draw
marrero louisiana n

Jermain taylor right hand deadly punch very strong
