I am Chinese and I will rate 10/10 to Meryl’s performance. I immediately recognized the poem when she speak Mandarin. (And those who claim they don’t - I think you missed several classes back in school) She nailed it, especially it has been nine years since she was asked to perform on stage a poem in a totally strange language to her. It shows to me what a great actress can achieve and many young actors and actresses - especially those in China, shall learn from it, as we all are sick of them “faking it” on live (you know what I’m talking about).
Btw when she said that the poem suits quarantine situation I know she not just remembers the pronunciation and meaning of it, but also understands the feeling and ideas of the poem - it’s about one who’s alone can make himself satisfied inside, being accompanied by small natural objects like sunshine and moss. It’s inspiring to me. Thank you, Meryl and Stephen for the rare and interesting show and be well!

As a Chinese instructor for nearly 10 years, I think it's safe to say that her Mandarin pronunciation is better than a lot of people who have been trying to learn the language but don't pay attention to tones and generally spoken ability so much. I can clearly hear her 4th tone and distinguishable 2nd tone, and she pronounced everything slowly and clearly, which is very impressive for a person who doesn't speak the language at all. Of course there are a few sounds like "r" and "q" that could be improved a bit, but in short - she SLAYED!

I’m a big fan of Meryl Streep! Managed to catch the first line, 空山不見人 and figured that it’s the poem by Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei. There’s no “Ma” sounding character in the entire poem though! 😆
Found the translation below on the East Asia Student website, hope it helps!
    鹿柴
    Lù Zhài
    [deer] [enclosure]
    The Deer Enclosure
    空山不見人,
    Kōngshān bùjiàn rén,
    [empty] [mountain] [not] [see] [person]
In the empty mountain, one does not see people,
    但聞人語響。
    dàn wén rén yǔ xiǎng.
    [yet] [hear] [person] [voice] [sound]
yet one hears the sound of human voice.
    返景入深林,
    Fǎn jǐng rù shēnlín,
    [reflect] [sunlight] [enter] [deep] [forest]
Reflected sunlight enters a deep forest,
    復照青苔上。
    fù zhào qīngtái shàng.
    [again] [shine] [luscious,green] [moss] [on]
and comes to shine on luscious, green moss.
青 isn’t just ‘green’; it often refers to youth and vitality as well.

Have always been a fan of Meryl Streep and this moment reminds me why. Not because she nails reciting the poem - she actually doesn't. She gets the first line almost spot-on, with the rest a little wobblier, though she approximates the words better than you might expect from someone who learned them as a poem in a completely foreign language nine years ago.
I love it because it says so much about who she is an actor and a human being. She's so respectful of what she learned all those years ago - she remembers what it means, how it feels, and how it sounds, to the point that she can reproduce it, on the spot, almost a decade later.
It's remarkable, too, that she can hear and imitate the tones of Mandarin; the precise words might not be quite right, but she remembers and can differentiate between the inflections, which is pretty darn impressive! That's usually what trips new learners up, as she helpfully explains with her 'ma' 'ma' 'ma' example.
How amazing is this woman, geez???? We have no choice but to stan. We have never had any choice but to stan!!!

It is wonderful people like Meryl Streep exist, that simply get love from everybody and they give it back. Has anybody ever heard a single bad word about her. I did not and I think it’s amazing and wonderful and even though it’s a phenomenon it’s maybe something we should all strive for.

Wow ! Meryl Streep has impeccable memory. It’s all retained as long term memory.
All she has to do (which is difficult) is add the emotion and flavor into the character she portrays.
No wonder she is an excellent actress. Hopefully we get another one like her in this lifetime...but I guess there is only one of her kind.
    Thank you Meryl Streep. 🙏🏽

The poet used contrast to build a beautiful and serene world . The mountain path is so silent that you can hear human chatter far far away. The shadow is so dark that it is light up by reflection light. It is tought in the 3rd grade Chinese literature class in China.

The fact that she tried even though she was aware that she may not get it is a testament to her character. The fact that she remembered as much as she did is a testament to her intellect and talent. She should not be criticized for not being perfect.

Ah, that's a famous poem by Wang Wei 王伟 (8th century CE), one of the four most famous poets of Tang dynasty times. If I remember correctly, it is from a cycle of poems in which he meditated on Buddhist ideas as he was very interested in Buddhism. But I think one can enjoy it without associating or understanding Buddhism.
In my perception, Ms. Streep recites it so well one can recognize it right away. Her memory is so good! As a student I got to write a paper on this poem but today I would not have gotten beyond the end of the second line from memory.

In Chinese script: 空山不见人 但闻人语响。返景入深林 复照青苔上。If you want to give it try, phonetically: Kōngshān bùjiàn rén, dàn wén rén yǔ xiǎng. Fǎn jǐng rù shēn lín, fù zhào qīngtái shàng. I won't rate her 10/10 (those who said it are learning the spoken language as a second language) but given it was years ago she learned it, and can still remember it, I am very impressed. She is very talented and can play any roles convincingly.
