Love the flame color of the formic acid and lithiumborohydrate, that greenish red looks amazing! Can't hear chromyl chloride without thinking about NileRed. :D That flame in the last reaction was huge!
The exceptional videography is really apparent here at 2:00 where we can actually see the intrinsic GREEN color of sodium (Na2) vapor! When we typically think of "sodium vapor" the color yellow comes to mind due to the famous D line doublet emission and this is what's of course responsible for the color of yellow street lamps. But that's atomic excitation emission, and here we see the very rarely observed diatomic MOLECULAR absorption of sodium, I guess due to some vibronic coupling mechanism. You can see that it's very ephemeral and lasts only a few seconds and exists only in the few millimeters above the burning metal where the vapor concentration is simultaneously very high but is also cool enough to allow the dimers to exist without being ripped apart into monoatomic Na. Beautiful.

If you are stranded in the woods, are freezing and have no matches, but happen to have hydrazine hydrate and chromyl chloride... :)
It feels like a waste, seeing all these highly expensive materials being burnt. And the chemicals were not cheap either, I guess..
He just has exotic chemicals in large quantities, and this kinda shows what you should not mix unless you want fire.

I'm guessing that Glycerol + Potassium permanganate is not in this video, because it is very well know.

The last one was really epic!
The trick is to make fire without using extremely powerful reducing and oxidising agents. A reaction I have found fascinating is the air oxidation of cotton cloth impregnated with a dryer oil, made from turpentine and manganese dioxide or linseed oil. Over a period of hours, the heat builds up until the cloth ignites. It is the explanation of a number of fires that have resulted from discarded painting cloths,used for cleaning brushes. Apparently this reaction has also been used by special forces in sabotage actions.
I love how both the flames of the LiBH4 and the Decaboran(14) reaction are slightly green-ish from the Boron. Also, I would have expected the Chromyl chloride reaction to be much more violent. Great video!

Great video! How about indirect ignition? Exothermic chemical reaction with heat transfer to a chemical with a low ignition point. Could be an interesting application for CS2, but please be very careful with it!
Yellow phosphorus dissolved in CS2 could be a good one :)

Hey would you be willing to do some interesting syntheses that go a little more in depth than the binary reactions you're showing? Something that has multiple steps and maybe involves reactions where you don't know the exact result in advance. I really enjoyed when you showed how to make anhydrous nitric acid, for example.
Also, I was wondering if there are any reactions where you could show the oxidizing power of flourine and what it can do. There must be some flourine compounds that are safe enough to handle (unless there aren't).
Fluorine is safe to handle if the right precautions are used :)

I can't help but think, though, that matches are slightly more portable. If I should ever happen to find myself in the wilderness with no matches though, I'll be certain to keep an eye out for high-oxidation-state chromium compounds... 😁

Delightful fireworks. Many of these oxidizers you're using are very rare to find in any amateur lab. I wonder if there are any novel fiery things that you can do with more common oxidizers... KmnO4 pops to mind, and calcium hypochlorite. I know, they've been featured a lot on YT, but I suspect the possibilities have not been exhausted.

Oh, there's another good one. You apply potassium chlorate, sulfur, and fine glass (mixed with a binding agent to keep them coherent and stable) with a little force against a thin layer of red phosphorous⸮

@@awli8861 No, I literally described what safety matches are made of. The red phosphor is actually in the paper strip on the package and the glass is used to cause that to heat up and ignite the match.

Onto a small pile of pool shock (Calcium Hypochlorite) add super glue(Cyanoacrylate), until the pile is damp with the glue.
Allow 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes and it should smoke briefly and vigorously erupt into flames.
Burns with a nice red to orange color.
How come the burning NaN3 forms Na2O2 and not Na2O?
Why do some reactions ignite so much more violent than others? Is it simply a matter of heat generation, or is there more at play?
Basically yes. The more stable the potential product ,the more energy releases during reaction. Also in reactions where gases are formed; due to expansion of gases, pressure rises very rapidly which combined with the produced heat creates a big or a small explosion

For me the cheapest and readily available potassium permanganate and glycerine are the most practical candidates for hypergolic combustion.
Ya know, I almost decided to go to college for a chemistry major, but I ended up going to a trade school for informational technologies (IT)
at 1:06: sodium azide shouldn't be scooped with a metal spatula may form shock explosive metal azides on your spatula by accident. Which might spray chemicals in your face next time you scrape it. I use a disposable plastic spoon or glass pipette to scoop NaN3. cool video sorry to be a buzz kill.
