      This same crap came up when that Amazon delivery plane crashed a few years ago because the co-pilot was Black and had failed some proficiency checks before being hired. Nevermind that the captain of the flight was white and didn't save the plane. Nevermind that the real failure was corporate governance at Atlas Air (the Amazon subsidiary.) No, it was a "diversity hire" situation that was the real problem even though the co-pilot wasn't hired under any diversity programs.

    The flight data recorder wasn’t erased. The way flight data recorders work is that they record only two hours of data before they start rewriting over the oldest data. This 2 hour limit was established long ago when recorders were bulky and had limited ability for long recordings. This is not the first incident where the critical data of the flight incident was over written thus making the investigation harder because of the absence of the data. The FAA teams that investigate crashes have recommended that this limit be increased to 24 hours on multiple occasions.
    The flight data recorders cannot be turned off by the crew of the plane.

    Back in the 1970s, McDonnell-Douglas had a problem with cargo doors falling off its new DC-10s. They made a "gentlemen's agreement" with the FAA to fix the problem without being forced to do so by an official Airworthiness Directive. Two years later, almost 400 people died when a Turkish Airlines DC-10 crashed in France after its cargo door blew off in flight.

    As far as I gather, the “door plug” is a misnomer. It is permanently (supposedly) sealed from the factory. Alaska couldn’t choose to unplug the door without sending the plane back to Boeing. It comes fully configured from the factory. So there is literally nothing the airline or any of its staff could have anything to do with.

      The plug door is able to be removed by the aircraft owner. They have to be able to as they might wish to reconfigure the aircraft to carry more passengers and would require the plug door converted to an emergency exit. This would be done by the aircraft fleet engineers.

    • @TheShortStory
      @TheShortStory 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marcuswardle3180 I have read conflicting reports on who would do an aircraft conversion. What's certain is that the plug door is not part of routine day-to-day maintenance as a matter of design. And it's unlikely such a new aircraft would have already been given a thorough detailing by Alaska maintenance staff so it's beside the point. It came off the line at Boeing (or Spirit, rather) with flaws that would not be expected to be noticed by the crew.

    Tim Pool: how do I blame black people?
    Also, “just over a million” is not charter flight money. You need at least 8 digits. My uncle, who was very well paid working for a pipeline company, was once aghast when his boss admitted he was upset he couldn’t afford a helicopter like the CEO (his boss) could. My uncle would never fly charter unless it was on the company’s dime. Similarly, my brother’s marching band requested to be flown out for a big football game. Wealthy school. The football program agreed. They hired a charter plane. That short flight cost more than all the rest of their away games combined.

      But affirmative action wasn't about picking people based on how they looked either. It was about the promotion of jobs to reach broader audiences of applicants and to assess how hiring norms and practises could be discriminatory. For an extreme example, if you want to have more gender diversity in a workplace, and you realise that quite a lot of higher management jobs are filled by networking at the gentleman's club, you're not going to get many women in those positions. But the hiring practise is what's discriminatory. The affirmative action is trying to neutralise that discrimination.

    Tim thinks a pilot can erase the Black Box data? What a dorky stooge.

    • @insu_na
      @insu_na ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well they kinda can. Pilots have to turn on the black box when turning on the plane, and if an incident occurs pilots are responsible for pulling the circuit breaker for the black box which stops it from recording.
      The black box works such that once it's turned on it just records 2 hours worth of cockpit audio, and starts overwriting the old data, like a circular tape. The box will thus only have recorded the last 2 hours, and if the pilots don't stop the recording the black box will just go on overwriting anything left on the tape by recording an empty cockpit over the old voice data.
      That doesn't mean it was intentional, because it very likely was just the pilots forgetting about it (since you only pull the breaker after an emergency, and those happen quite rarely)

    The simple fact of the matter is that Boeing has been cutting corners for, literally, decades. I've been watching TH-cam uploads of an old sketch comedy show called "Almost Live." It was a local show that Seattle's NBC affiliate aired before SNL for some 20 years, from the 80's up to the turn of the century. They were mocking Boeing's incompetence that entire time, characterizing the workers as being lazy, the management as being completely inept, and the planes as being poorly built and barely suitable to taxi around an airport. The problems that have arisen with both the original 737's **and** the MAX line are the prime examples of the material the show was drawing from. This is nothing new whatsoever for the company.
    As for Beanie Boy's complaints about the cost of flying private jets: OH MY GOD, YOU MEAN THE LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND ACTUALLY HAS **CONSEQUENCES?!** Demand has gone up, supply has not been able to match it, therefore the price has gone up! That's the free market, baby! I thought that was supposed to be a GOOD thing! Once again, we have a "conservative" complaining about the results of capitalism. I'm a capitalist, I'm not here to say that's a bad thing. But it's always amusing when these idiots preach laissez-faire until it hits THEM.
