Ninjask does shed it's shell when evolving... so leaving behind half of its defense kinda makes sense to me...

Fun fact: Shedinja also has 45 defense (not that it matters lol) like Ninjask, and added together they make 90 like Nincada. So you could assume Ninjask lost 45 defense specifically because of losing its former shell, Shedinja
For me it looked like the attack and defense swapoed from 45 attack and 90 defense to 90 attack and 45 defense, showing it's change in priority
I think we interpret speed too literally, in battle speed determines who attacks first but that's really not about speed but reactivity. I can easily see a Pokemon being given an intentionally low speed stat to make it more reactive as opposed to being proactive

That was my thought. The speed stat isn't the Pokemon's top speed if they were to race, but reaction speed. Who is able to move into attack more quickly.
Still Vikavolt makes no sense.
So my fat house cat sometimes reaches the speed of light when I open a can. I don't find it so illogical.

What can surprise quite a few people is Gallade's special defense. It's actually crazy high for a physical attacker.
guess it makes sense since introduction of fairy types and most fairy moves are special except for, I think play rough.
I think it's because Gallade is more of a support Pokemon. It's got Wide Guard, Quick Guard, Helping Hand, and Taunt.
It's like like it was meant to be a great support Pokemon with a strong Close Combat.

Nincada, after evolving, splits in body and armor; armor turns into shedinja, and body turns into ninjask. That’s why ninjask and shedinja both have 1/2 of Nincada’s defense.

The earth crab thing looks to only have a small layer of clay, and a lot of loam/soil. Clay is the hard stuff. That's the stuff that gives you trouble while digging. Loam/soil is relatively easy to move through.
But have you ever tried to dig through a tree root? Now that's a challenge. Get out your hatchet. Maybe Leafeon is a tree root with leaves on it.

Actually, the wailord/joltik thing makes sense for two reasons, those being dexterity and size. When calculating your Armor Class in D&D dexterity is taken into account. Which is easier to hit, something small and fast like a spider, or big and slow like a whale?
There’s a difference between travel speed and combat speed, some Pokémon maybe able to travel at incredible speeds but it doesn’t mean charging an attack won’t take them sometime.

@@Hihi-lo2di its kind of funny, I hear all about Martins solrock being trash all the time but in my game he has only used cosmic power 1 time and rock polish 5 times out of the many times he has been on my team. Talk about lucky.

The eeveelution thing partly makes sense, Flareon can use quite some physical moves, while some grass types are bulky as well, which is because so they can tank enemies and leech seed them, as well as poisoning, making them sleep or paralyzing
That still doesn’t matter.
Machamp is a fighting type Pokémon with four very-developed muscly arms!
Flareon should NOT be able to hit as hard as Machamp, it has skinny tiny arms!
Leafeon is made of leaves. Leaves are very fragile whilst Crustle is literally a crab with an earth shell, earth is very tough. Rather if Grass is bulky, it shouldn’t be more bulky than a literal rock-type!
To be honest leafeon having a high defense kinda makes sense because if you think about it. It’s hard to punch a leaf and break it because it’s so flimsy and light so if a machamp punches a leafeons tail or something. The leaf will just be pushed around
Here’s a fun one:
A shadow ball from a Gastly, presuming they have the same IV’s, natures, etc, would do the same damage as a shadow ball

Because 100 special attack is still very high, and it has a good special movepool. Gastly just has an absurdly high special attack for the first Pokémon in a three-stage evolution line
My Dragapult is Jolly so instead I run a physical set with Dragon Darts and Phantom Force with a Power Herb so she can hit something instantly on the first use. Well, a mixed set, cuz I also run Flamethrower on her. I know she's Jolly, but without Flamethrower she gets walled by them Steel types. It still works tho. Her last slot is Suckah Punch, cuz Wynaut.

Well to be fair, ticks are notoriously pretty hard to kill, and wailord is lighter than air, so it makes sense to be able to just be deflated when hit.
I like to think that the speed stat stands for reaction time. Not how fast you are. Hence why vikavolt is slow (cannot turn quickly, planes take forever to turn around), but purugly is so fast (even fat cats can claw an eye out before you know they are attacking you)
It can perform acrobatic flying manoeuvres, so turning isn't a problem. It probably just takes time to charge attacks.
So in a way, “speed” just means agility..
Actually makes sense. Hmm.
Remember people, DON'T take a shot every time he says "The competitive scene", you will die in seconds.

Let's be honest, Gen 7 didn't like the speed stat.

gen 7? what about 8, with three pokemon with 30 speed?
I think Gamefreak decided to fit the Gen 7 Pokemon with the tropical theme and so they made them slower...
As for the Gen 8 slow guys, remember that all of those are Trick Room users
And to add to that, most of the gen 8 dex seems to be built around themes, so for them to make slow pokemon with trick room in mind wouldn't surprise me at all.
To me, it felt like half of the fully evolved Alolan Pokemon had speed stats of base 60 or lower
Onix is so big and looks strong they should revamp its stats
I'm pretty sure it's because it doesn't have a free evolution or an evolution plus it's not a legendary and it's used by the first gym leader

About the Trapinch, Poliwrath situation. Normally, you put more force into crunching something with jaw. When your punching something, sure you may be tensing your muscles to hit it hard, but your using multiple muscles at once when you do.

I like to think that there are 2 types of defense either the pokemon is really physically strong like Onix thus being able to tank attacks or like joltik vs waillord(can't spell not going to bother) the cute little spider is tiny and harder to hit than a gaint whale so thus having more defense.
Nincada has double defense because Shedinja, a whole other pokemon, also came off of Nincada to become Ninjask
I remember when I was first was playing pokemon shield, I was fighting the water gym, and I had a leafeon
in the front of my team. Although, while playing, I did not reliaze how low leveled I was, and I was very scared of fighting nessa
Somehow I survived and I was very surprised on how well my Leafeon defended.

“Not a single fighting type Pokémon before gen 5 has higher attack than flareon”...and yet it still sucks
They did give him the 95 on the special attack (which is useless) if they swaped the special attack and the speed he would have been much better
Also for anyone who doesn't know this: all Eeveelutions have fixed stats of 60+60+65+95+110+130, which are just rearranged between every different one

Politoad got the Drizzle ability, making him core in rain teams. Poliwrath got outclassed by a slew of other fighting type pokemon, so you'd almost always want a Politoad over Poliwrath. Could be a reason why they buffed him.
Still kinda weird but yeah.
And dustox is leagues better than the worst lepidorian Pokemon in the game.

Poliwrath's typing is much better, honestly. Water/Fighting with Water Absorb gives a hella underrated spread of resists and an immunity to a popular type. If you're doing weatherless teams, always pick Poliwrath over Politoed.
@@gengarzilla1685 If your in normal single player pokemon, sure go use Poliwrath. But in a competitive environment pleasee don't use Poliwrath, the only time I've seen it being used is in a cheesy belly drum set which works 10% of the time.
Fun fact: I am currently in the middle of the Alpha Sapphire Elite Four, and am planning to use my Furret to try and outspeed Glacia's freaking Froslasses. I'm gonna use her since she has decent Attack and Shadow Claw, and has higher speed then my only other super effective pokemon.

On defense of Giratina, on his release he was meant to be the Beef tank of the trio.
Hence why he has the highest HP stat and more balanced Def and special, where Dialga was more tank against physical and Palkia against Special.

You have to remember that Nincada’s evolution involves it shedding its shell (Shedinja is the hollowed shell of Nincada), that means that it loses its primary defense. It actually makes sense that Nincada has 2x Defense than Ninjask because Ninjask is a Nincada without a shell.
See my problem here is that ones like Wailord and Dusknoir are there for game balancing, them having massive defenses and massive HP would just be unbalanced.
Once, my Frogadier was level 30, and I fought a level 25 purugly. It out speeded me so hard, when I raised my speed by two stages, it was still faster

I like to think of the speed stat as “reaction time to trainers order” rather than actual speed. So purrugly, being a cat, has a fast reaction time and can attack before latios and Latias, even if they have a higher top speed. Thank you for listening to my ted talk :)

Except thats not true, seeing how if you flee or not is partially dependent on the head mon's speed stat. Plus, if it WAS reaction time, Latias and Latios could still strike Purugly *first,* because even if they react slower, *they’re jet planes against a big cat.* Cool to think about, *but no.*
Or it could be bursts of speeds or dexterity. A cat being able to jump out of the way of a coming attack makes sense. Also, Electrode is the fastest Gen 1 Pokemon, with a base speed of 140. Is it faster than a fighter jet? No. But it's able to do quick manoeuvres because of its spherical shape.
I consider it the time it takes for an attack to happen after it knows the order. Vikavolt, for example, is based on a railgun, and as such would take a while to charge its attacks, whereas purugly is a cat that is far more capable of quickly pulling off an attack as soon as it knows what to do. Sorry if this is what your comment meant, but I assume you're talking about the time taken between the trainer giving the order and the Pokémon registering it.

I think Nincada’s defence was split between Ninjask and Shedinja, at least that’s what makes the most sense to me

The bulky pokemon having a lower physical attack actually makes some sense when you look at their speed stat. Physical attacks use kinetic energy, which is calculated as 1/mass X velocity squared. They have a lot of mass, but no speed to throw it around with.

When I first had a Vikavolt in Pokémon Sun, I thought it would out-speed everything. Somehow I hadn’t noticed until someone pointed it out because it looks like it would have at least base 110 speed. But nope!! It’s one of the slowest Pokémon I’ve had.

Well, ninjask has a lower defense because it’s supposed to be the cicada that just came out of it’s cocoon, meaning it’s exoskeleton is softer

Fun fact. Shedinja and Ninjask combined to equal Nincada's defense stat. The bug inside the shell combined with the shell is equal to the bug that had the shell still on, defensively. Also interesting enough... their base hp stats combine to exactly double Nincada's.

Did you know that crandios and rampardos has a greater attack stat than most of the sinnoh legendaries? Felt weird that wasnt mentioned here but I was certainly not expecting flareon to have that high of an attack stat.
The speed stat really seems to be more attack speed rather than physical movement speed. Vikavolt is partially based on a railgun, which I'm fairly sure load and fire pretty slowly. Purugly is a cat, and cat reflexes tend to be rather good.
Bea’s defense stat must be insane to spar with a machamp.

Keep in mind she still hurt her hand really bad in that episode, BECAUSE she sparred with machamp.
Slaking could be one of the most overpowered Pokemon based on its stats but it's ruined by the worst ability in the game next to Slow Start.

That's kind of the point. Slaking isn't a Legendary Pokemon or anything, so they had to give it a hindering ability to balance out its stats. In fact, it's high stats probably came after the designers decided on the ability.

Those horns were just ears, and it was a giant ferret! You sigh in relief, and feel better until you see what's in this creature's hands. It raises it's weapon, and your scream cuts sharper than the axe going through your body.

Another surprising stat worth mentioning.
Scyther STILL has 500 base stat total when it evolves into Scizor. It doesn't get more HP, Special Attack and Special Defense upon evolving, it just looses 40 Base Speed and gets plus 20 Base Attack and Defense. This stat swap might have made sense for a branched evolution line, where one would be faster and the other would be bulkier and hits harder, but it doesn't make sense for a straight evolution chain, Scizor should have been stronger. For all I know this is the only Pokemon that is just as strong as it's evolved form. Its stupid, it's sad and I hate it, Scizor being one of my favorite Pokemon :(

About Speed stats, I like to think that speed does not measure top speed, but rather either reflex or initiative. It helps clear up a little bit, but it, admittedly, does not clear up everything.

I just learned about this. The reason why Vikavolt is so slow is because it’s based on a railgun. Railguns hit very hard but are very slow to charge up.
