If you want to have the closest thing to SSD like performance around that time 10K RPM WD Raptors in RAID 0. They were ridiculously overbuild too, chances are there's couple of those still around.

@@jabaniz Modern SSD absolutely trash them and so did first gen SSDs when it came to random reads and writes, but they do come closer than anything else that was available at that time. Especially in RAID0. You gotta remember SSDs just straight up weren't a thing.

And vs my other sata 3 SSDs they provide 50-60mb/s better read and same loading times for games (much much faster than WD blacks I got even tho Raptors are only sata II)

This was a really fun drive down memory lane, I remember watching your 8800GTX review on tiger direct and I had 2 8800GTS in sli just to run crysis on very high at 1920x1080. Managed to squeeze out enough performance to run that baby.

YES around 2007 was when i bought my first all new gaming parts pc after years of dabbling around with old garage sale parts. my room was wall pappered with Maximum PC, GameInformer and other pc magazine pages😀I bought my Gigabyte motherboard at CompUSA it had a flame style north bridge heatsink very few had them since they ran hot. i replaced it. I got my XFX 9800 GTX+ at a local Ribbit Computers shop. I remember lots of your TigerDirect reviews. I got my Corsiar HX750W in 2009 and Samsung 1920x1200 monitor/TV from TIgerDirect. Still a good power supply with no coil wine yet after all these years. I sold the motherboard in box with everything on ebay a few years ago more than what i paid for it originally 🧐 then recently got a deal on a Gigabyte motherboard similar in the video. Maybe someday I'll revive my ultimate retro XP machine with a Xeon 771 mod with the same corsair ram 1GB sticks i still have or my 4x2GB G.Skill ram i have. Don't know why you would go IDE drives when you have the sata ports. I still have my WD 10,000RPM VelociRaptor drive with a window! i keep it propped in, but not plugged in my toaster dock so its not powered, but on display still works when i need it. I think it still has XP or 7 installed on it😀
i still use 2x500GB raptors in hard raid 0, then later added 2x1TB raptors in windows raid 0 for games booting with an Intel 600P mvme ssd

I can remember my very first gaming PC that I built myself. I built it in early 2001 with a 1.0 GHz Pentium III CPU with 256 mb of pc133 ram, 32 mb GeForce 2 graphics card, creative sound blaster card, a 20 gb hard drive, floppy drive, CD-RW drive and DVD drive. For the operating system, I originally had Windows ME on it, but then later in the Fall of 2002, I upgraded it to Windows XP.

I started with a P90 (Intel 90 Mhz) and 2 MB Graphics card and 8 MB RAM, switch to an Athlon XP 2000 Mhz and a GeForce 4 with 256 MB RAM a couple of years later and used for few years...after that switched, to Athlon 64 3000 Mhz and an ATI 9550 and 756 MB RAM...this system sill exists in a storage :)..so long before your BFG 8800 GTX... I remember cutting with metal scissors the side panel and gluing an acrylic panel that hade made holes with a heated nail and attached a LED fan with a 3 colours combination (red, green and blue) so it had all three led lights turned on and kinda created a rainbow when fan was spinning...was the coolest PC in the hood

Loved this video. I built an XP rig myself and its been so much fun. Believe it or not Half-Life 2 is DRM free, you can actually copy the HL2 contents from steam and run them on XP and it will work. The episodes can also be played but must be run through the command prompt with a specific parameter.

Sad thing is the first computer I actually built was pre-xp, with the next computer I built coming into existence just before 8 was out. Filling the gaps in between were prebuilts, dell dimension 2400 with a celeron and an emachine with a dual core athlon 2. The system that replaced those rigs is still my daily driver with an i7 3770k :)

Oh wow, I've been finishing a build for a friend on 775 right at the same time as you did, it seems! The idea was to get the most bang for buck. Here comes:
    QX6700 $16.35
    Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR $24.08
    G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 Mhz 4x4gb = 16gb $51.99
    Palit 660ti 2gb $35.46
    Kingston SSD 120gb $14.18
Thermaltake CPU cooler (huge bastard) $12.41
    Misc (case coolers, adapters) $8.62
    Total: $163
Graphic card and ssd I had laying around (still included in the price), while rest of the parts I bought used. UD3LR I chose because of 16 gb ram max. Case, hdds, PSU and some misc cables not included as they were initially in the build. Also, if we subtract the used market price of removed old components, the upgrade price is down to $127. Pretty good, I believe :3

This made me want to get my first gaming PC build running again. My Chieftec Dragon isn't quite in as good of shape as yours, but I spent a few hours cleaning it up last night. Unfortunately, it's not working because ~10 years ago my stepdad had broken it while trying to dust the inside of it. Luckily my mom kept it in case I ever wanted it back. After 3 years of sitting in my garage, it's fully cleaned and just waiting on replacement parts... which I ordered on eBay last night.
Bummer to hear about the software issues you encountered, but definitely not surprised. It would be cool if GoG added support for Windows XP since they sell games compatible with it, but I realize that's a lot of dev resources to dedicate to such a small base. I'd rather see them support Linux with their GoG Galaxy client first.

Like a bunch of others, I built my first PC after watching you on TD. I had one of those Ultra cases with the same front panel style but it had 120mm fans and a mobo tray so the OEM must have updated the design eventually. Had a BFG 8800GTS 512MB and green migraine man was awesome. Unfortunately it died right after BFG went out of business. Had a Q6600 and the EVGA 780i board, and I think I even had that same mem. It eventually had a 10k raptor in there too after a friend took a few from his job. Replaced the GPU with an HD6850 and used that until 2015.

I'm still using the Antec version of this case in grey with a solid side panel. Came with a 2.6 ghz core 2 duo, gigabyte LGA 775 mobo, and basic ATI video card. The case was and still is absolutely pristine. I pulled it out of my closet recently and put in a spare x58 mobo/xeon 6 core x5670/9gb ddr3/660 ti/7200 rpm HDD. Can't get myself to sell it off to be honest. It was the first case I ever purchased when I got a job at 16 years old or so. Stopped using it cause I got one of those goofy NZXT Apollo cases 😂

i have a windows xp gaming pc setup, a little tip for an up to date web browser, mypal is working really well with winxp sp3, has frequent updates, supports addons like adblock, and is pretty stable, been using it for about a year now with little to no issues. i have a pair of gtx 8800 ultra's but there are newer cards that will perform better that still have xp drivers, "i know some guys build systems around a year or life cycle of an OS, but i build my systems with hardware that has support, im using an old radeon hd 6870, i have 2 of them but i haven't found a game that runs poor enough to force me to try and install the second one lol, the 6870 runs really well in xp and has a native driver on the amd site, im running the xeon x5460, i think it was around $15 on ebay, the motherboard is a gigabyte ep45c-ds3r, im using 8gb of ram, but im running xp 32bit, so only 4gb is getting used, if i want to dual boot a 64bit linux OS i can and be able to use all the ram, im also using an audigy 2zs, but i think a x-fi would be a better card for windows xp, it supports higher versions of EAX, i think the audigy is EAX 3, while the x-fi supports EAX 5, really happy with my experience with this build, plenty of power, but some games like gta san andreas will have issues with ati/amd cards with things like frame limiter disabled, even when forcing vsync in the driver the game has a weird bug, so i have to leave the limiter enabled to play it, im thinking about getting a gtx 580 and replacing the 6870, what do you guys think ?

I just built a high end 2008 Windows xp gaming rig about two months ago in an old chieftec TA-10WD full tower case. I had been pondering the idea of an ultimate XP machine for about 5 years before finally going through with it.
    My specs are
Motherboard • Asus Striker II Extreme, nForce 790i Ultra SLI
    CPU • Xeon X5470 @ 3.33ghz
    Memory • 4gb OCZ Platinum DDR3 @ 2000mhz
GPU • EVGA 780Ti Superclocked reference card
    Storage • 500gb 7200rpm WD Blue HD
Power Supply • 1200w fully modular Rosewill
I realize the 780Ti isn't really accurate to a 2008 era pc, but it is the last flagship Nvidia GPU that officially supports Windows XP.
I still need a sound card and I plan to install a Sound Blaster X-FI Platinum. I'm also currently researching and planning out how I will add in a soft-tube custom loop since there is still a lot of room left inside the case. Im very proud of it so far so whoever reads this please let me know your thoughts.

Because I did a full system upgrade, I used my last build for Windows XP which is well above spec. ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, Phenom II X6 1100T (all cores locked at 3.7GHz), 8GB DDR3 1333MHz 6-6-6-18, Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium, and an Nvidia GTX 285. As is, I can play FarCry without dipping too much below 150 FPS at 1600x1200. I did have two Radeon HD 6850s in Crossfire but that took too much power and I wanted the real PhysX. I do plan to get a newer model nvidia video card with Display Port. The 900 series is the last with Windows XP drivers but a 750 Ti will do.

I was checking for video card reviews on TH-cam and stumbled upon "Logan" from Tigerdirect who was reviewing the 8800 ultra and the 8800 ultra black pearl edition. I ended up getting an 8800 ultra GPU, Asus striker extreme motherboard, Core 2 Extreme QX6850 CPU, 12gb of 800Mhz ram and a coolermaster cosmos tower. And yeah it could run Crysis!

Half-life 2 should not be tied too steam at all actually so you can just move it too a usb drive & move it into this pc fine.

What I’m planning to do is buy a very modern case all of our Gen Z considers a “PC case” and then shove mostly components dating back to the early days of ATX, except the PSU of course, as they are like the most critical component of all and generally modern PSUs are built much solidly than back then, given how power supply technology has evolved over the years

Nice! Currently working on a retro XP build using an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (Toledo), using a modern Ryzen Wraith Max cooler, on an Elite Group NForce3-A939 purple motherboard, 2GB of Kingston Hyper-X DDR 400 in dual channel, a 256MB XFX 6600GT AGP card, and a Creative Audigy SB0090 PCI sound card, in an Antec NSK4100 case, with a SeaSonic SS-500ET PSU, Noctua fans & things.
(Primarily for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 Professional, as MS FS 2002 doesn't like my 8GB Q9650 Gigabyte EP35-DS3R 2GB EVGA 750 Ti SC Audigy SB0090 XP Pro 32-bit / 8.1 Pro 64-bit (with Classic Shell) build).

If you install Half-Life 2 on another machine running Win7+ and then copy the files over to an XP machine it will work. For whatever reason, it does not require Steam to run anymore.

I bought something for my first build from tiger direct. my OCZ vendetta 2 cpu cooler with the Thermaltake screw mount kit, my Asus p5q-em, and my corsair vx450. I think. Ncix, canadacomputers, and tiger direct all contributed to that build.

A lot of this looks like the stuff I used to build my first custom rig back in 2011... Just a bit newer. Visually the design language hadn't really made the shift to GAMER yet.

Running the same board with a Xeon E5472 3ghz as a backup right now. My z97 system crapped itself. Honestly it handles win10 fine and I've been able to play the entirely of the witcher 3 on medium/high. Waiting for Zen 3.

The Xeon X54xx processors run hot. I prefer the E5450 at 3.0GHz that easily overclocks to 3.6GHz and the thermals stay in the mid-50's while gaming. Just a much easier chip to work with.

I was still using one of those cases (the Antec variant) up until about 10 months ago....yes it sounded like a jet engine next to you. Built a new system last year and it's complete minus the poor RTX3080 I have going with EVGA Stepup that I probably never will get lol
