    It's amazing how Americans have a passion for a pocket clip and a locking mechanism on their knives. I've seen many say negative things about the corkscrew too (which the Trekker doesn't come with for instance). In Europe, people see the locking mechanism on pocket knives as a plus but it seldom is a requirement. Nobody cares about pocket clips in Europe as far as I know and the corkscrew is widely used in picnics and backpacking trips. Both Americans and Europeans like one-hand opening, although I also think that Americans created it and Victorinox adapted their product line to suit its most important market. All in All, you can't go wrong with a Victorinox knife.

      Americans just don't drink much wine, in comparison to beer. I used the corkscrew on my Victorinox Compact for the first time in years last week. My wife couldn't find the kitchen corkscrew. I am completely indifferent about pocket clips. There is a growing trend in America to have technology do everything rather than take the effort to sweat the details and do it right. Electronic pressure sensors in tires rather than checking them by hand with a gauge is a good example. A lock blade is there to protect sloppy people from cutting themselves, it's a nice safety feature, but I can work carefully even when I don't have to. One handed opening can be a actual life saver when you really only have the use of one hand, otherwise it's just a perk that saves time.

    For years, my EDC knife has been the Victorinox Forester, which is basicly the same as the Trekker, but has a corkscrew instead of the crosstip screwdriver. Although I keep trying several Coldsteel and Real Steel folders, I end up with the Victorinox every time, since it is so practical. And it's easy to resharpen and not even expensive. I can recommend these types of Victorinox knives to everybody^^

    I have the serrated version. These are very good quality knives. The Victorinox style can openers are one of these best if not the best. I own multiple Victorinox knives and watches. Just good quality all around.

    My EDC work knife is a surplus German Army knife. Four differences aside, it's identical. The final 2/3rds of the blade is serrated, the scales are olive drab with a German Army insignia, it has no tooth pick or tweezers.
    It's works great, emphasis on work, I use it constantly. It's everything Victorinox is known for, reliable, versatile, and well designed. The bottle opener/flat blade is really good for prying. It's has far more leverage than those mini pry bars every one loves to EDC. (Those things were only good for breaking into doll houses anyways.) The one handed opening is silky smooth. The awl works really well with the Phillips screwdriver setting up a smooth surface for a new screw. If you really need to pierce something use the awl, that's what it's for. If you need to pierce somebody the blade and adrenaline will do the job. The locks hold tight and release easy. I could could buy aftermarket scales or modify the existing ones to add a toothpick and tweezers, but I choose to keep it stock. I find that Uncle Bills Silver Grippers work better for me and I can whittle my own tooth pick. Having too many tools in one item get's in the way. If I want more or different tools I'll carry another knife or a multitool. (A Victorinox Compact gives me a non serrated blade, scissors, a hook, a cork screw, and a jewelers screw driver.) I don't care for a clip. There are people who make them for Victorinox knives, if you want to go that way. I find it carries just fine in a pouch horizontal on my belt. I bought mine off Ebay unboxed with no obvious signs of wear or use other than a lack of shine on the scales. I consider the $30 money well spent.
    Victorinox makes a similar knife under contract for the US military. The scales are different and all exposed metal is matte black. Countless military contracts done over decades are a testament to Victorinox's reliability and utility.

    It's refreshing to see a knife like this being reviewed on TH-cam instead of the ubiquitous "survival" knives & premium expensive choices. Very good general use full size SAK. At the risk of being "that guy"; you forgot to mention the wire stripper on the large flat head screw driver/bottle opener. That is also not an awl. Victorinox refers to it as a reamer. Their awl on their knives has a hole in it to accommodate a waxed thread or other relatively narrow gauge cordage for stitching. Cheers.

      Dude, you are so "that guy", wear it with pride. You got me too. I mistook the reamer for a Awl. Ha! I get you right back! The tool that opens bottles and strips wire is considered a prybar according to Victorinox. So we are both "That Guy". Is this going to be like Highlander, where "there can be only one"? Must we battle to the death with our Victorinox's? Perhaps we can just form a club "Those Guys". We can hang out, drink coffee and beer and talk about EDC and stuff. "What it got in it's pockets, precious?"

      @@Imightberiding I am in recovery. I have what I have, but I don't buy anything unless I actively need it to earn money. Just because I like something doesn't mean I have to posses it. There are some people out there that are really into gun control. They see a gun and they are just compelled to control it, personally. I realized that having a Batman tool belt wouldn't make me Batman, (theoretically speaking of course). I place more importance on skills and knowledge than things these days. Now days I collect knots, in muscle memory. It helps me travel light, I just need a single rope.

    Get rid of the toothpick and replace it with a Tortoisegear ferro rod. The knife will then give you cutting and backup combustion capability. Did it on my Ranger 78 and it works great. The little ferro rod, using the spine of the saw, throws plenty of spark for ignition. You can carve a toothpick if you need one.

    • @flyfish6473
      @flyfish6473 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LubberKing I've stared many fires w the Tortoisegear ferro rod, it works fine. It's just a backup which I'd rather have and know works, than a toothpick which I can easily make in a minute or less. If you're caught wo a ferro rod, matches or a lighter and need fire, good luck.

    Almost everyone doesn’t acknowledge or know, that the can opener isn’t just a small straight screw driver. It works for Philips too. I’ve actually had more use for it being a Philips driver than the actual 3d Philips driver on other victorinoxs. Try it out. Won’t be disappointed

    I have been carrying this one for about 6 months on my camping trips and the only thing I found myself wishing it had was a lock on the saw. The saw blade has a nice sharp spine that will strike a ferro rod, but with no lock it collapses easy with pressure. If it had that it would be perfect, in my opinion. Great review.

    • @lukthere2
      @lukthere2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some1 mentioned that u can just put a piece of wood between the body and the saw as you close it. That way it locks up and you can strike the ferro rod with it.

    I have this knife with the serated edge. It really doesn't act like a aerated edge when you use the knife. I chose to switch out the toothpick with the Firefly fire steel. I do wish that it had a belt clip. The saw is VERY aggressive no complaints here. Fantastic knife.

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm right with you on the blade. My German Army knife has the serrated blade and no toothpick or tweezers. I thought about modifying my scales and getting a Firefly & tweezers. I decided that somethings shouldn't be done with compromise tools. I carry Uncle Bill's Silver Gripper tweezers, far superior to Victorinox tweezers. I also carry a full sized fire steel. I got caught unprepared in freezing rain once. It is fact that the more you need a fire the harder it is to make. Manipulating a miniature fire starter with shaking hands is not a reliable way to make a fire. If you want to have a Firefly as a back up then more power to you. My back up is a Bic lighter. You can add an after market clip if you are willing to modify. I carry mine in pouch and I can quick deploy with my lanyard. I never had any problems and because it's covered it stays cleaner, get's less wear and I don't suffer from pocket crunch.

    Great Knife!!! I like that it doesn't have a pocket clip. I carry mine with a TEC Accessories P-7 suspension clip. Stealthily as it hangs completely in pocket and only a tiny part of the P-7 clip is clipped to the top of the pants pocket. I also run a Pioneer Alox with a TEC Accessories P-7 suspension clip with dress pants.

    I have the version of the Trekker that does not have a one-hand opening blade. My (workday) pocket EDC currently rotates between a Spyderco Resilience and a D2 RAT1. However, I keep the Trekker in my EDC bag in case I forget to put one of the aforementioned knives in my pocket before I go out the door in the morning. In case of such a brainfart, it goes into my pocket as my pocket EDC for the day. Ironically, I bought mine at Smoky Mountain Knife Works (I live in TN, just about an hour away from SMKW.) I like going there when I want an SAK because they have a section dedicated to Victorinox - basically a case mounted to a wall that takes up much of the wall as well as a few, free standing display cases. It is amazing to see all the different models of SAK that Victorinox makes.

    If you use the can opener going away from you, counter clockwise, it works better on a SAK (Swiss Army Knife). On a leatherman you go clockwise.

    I have a Trekker with a partially (60%ish) serrated version. One time, on a Boy Scout trip, my friend was trying to make a fork out of a stick. So, he was using the saw to make the prongs. While doing this, he was sawing towards himself, like an idiot, and cut himself. With a quick slice he gave himself a 1/4-1/2 centimeter deep cut. This is also the friend who licked his leathermans blade and cut his lip. I love this knife and have had it for more than a year and am yet to see rust or need to sharpen it.

    I have this knife as a birthday gift and a downside you didn't mention is the liner lock is backwards. So you have to switch it to your left hand to unlock it. The liner must be pressed towards you instead of away from you to unlock it. Anyone else notice this? Is this true if all Trekkers? Or did my friend accidentally buy me a lefthanded model?

    I have that knife and love it. Have had it for close to 10 years and although I hate it as an EDC as it is heavy (I use a mini griptilian as my EDC), I can't say enough good things about it. It really is all you need without having an overly bulky knife or multitool. It is what I keep on me when doing household maintenance and whatnot. That blade is insanely sharp and can be made so sharp that you can cut the curve of folded receipt paper. I use it to cut up cardboard more often than my olfa knives.
    The tip of the knife not being a point is pretty much a non issue where it is not a knife to use to defend yourself, although I would NOT want to get slashed by that blade after it is fully sharpened!

    • @JasonPrice1
      @JasonPrice1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree. That is why I have an EDC bag that has a multitool in it and a few other things such as advil, aleve, Robax, bandaids, backup power pack, pens, gum, dedicated flashlight and extra batteries, nail clippers and several other things that I am sure I am forgetting.
      I work in an office so it is easier to just carry this all in a good bag and then just EDC my minigrip in my pocket.

    What is interesting and makes the model attractive that the proverbial Swiss Army knife is pocket knife, but this takes it into the same arena as a folding knife with a longer handle. I like small knives, but am better with a handle I can grip with four fingers. It looks plain and non-threatening, but useful and like one of those things you come to love using.

      @@PJ-mj1hy the easiest way I can explain is go to the video from tortoise gear on how to use the Firefly ferro rod. He has a great method there and that is how I strike all my ferro rods now. Teeth down on the material your trying to ignite, and run the ferro rod on the spine.

    How would you say this compares to the rangergrip78? I think for less than 2 dollars more the rangergrip78 having the emblem lock for the blade instead of liner lock would be a better purchase

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Skipper with a emblem lock and a German Army knife with a liner lock. I like the liner lock better. I don't expect the emblem lock to fail, but it has more moving parts and one of them is plastic. That does make it more prone to failure. The liner lock is just a simple steel spring. Some people are worried about the safety releasing a liner lock. I have not had a problem yet, even closing it one handed. I don't like getting hurt so I practiced doing it right carefully. I can do it now with my eyes closed because it is locked into muscle memory. If $2 buys you happiness, go for it.

      I may be mistaken, but I think the German Army comes with a serrated blade only. Not a fan of that.

    As much as I would love this knife, I see my victorinox purchases as a chance to get a non-locking knife (legal purposes, and they scare my parents less than my other knives). I agree that this is a great knife overall
    P.S.: I think that there is a version of this that doesn't have a locking blade

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know where you live, if a lock blade knife is illegal there I guess that is the law. I understand that a big knife is more intimidating than a small knife. What I don't get is how a safety mechanism that won't allow the blade to fold accidentally and cause harm is scary. By its very design a lock blade knife, used properly, is safer than a knife of the same size without a lock. Do your parents suffer from some sort of phobia? By that logic a gun without a safety be less scary than one than has one. What else are your parents scared of, people without clown make up?

    • @MrSATism

      @@ScorpionRegent I mean my mother grew up in a rough neighborhood that involved a lot of people being killed by big knives so I guess being afraid of a knife is kind of reasonable...
      Also it's a joke my dude. I am the "designated cutter" and the "knife guy" in my family, so believe it or not, I get to use my knives in the house, and some of them LOCK! *Gasp*
      My primary point in that comment was: I don't want my Victorinox to lock, because that's my preference. Is it an asshole move to cut off an entire product line because of a feature I don't want? Sure.
      But there's no reason to insult my parents, I love them very much. I hope you love yours just as much

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrSATism I'm sorry if what I said seemed like I thought less of your parents. I just misunderstood the situation. Your parents fear knives, that I can understand. Ok, well now that we have that sorted out. There are plenty of knives in the world that do not lock: Kukris, tanto's, perangs, machetes, cutlasses, daggers, ...., but seriously. Forgive my attempt at heavy handed humor.
      You will find a knife that works for you and that's the important thing. Most Victorinox knives do not lock so no worries about having no options. You made a choice, that is your prerogative. Who am I to tell some one else what makes them happy? So long as they are rational with their knives.

    Tim I love your vids. But not your sawing method. if you had been cutting a two-by-four proppin g it on something like that with a power saw It would have jumped out of your hands. You supposed to Anchor what you're trying to keep and let what you're trying to saw off fall free. you had to keep repositioning it cuz you were pinching the blade as you were cutting through. And it gets worse as you go. Next time put the branch on the Rock and kneel on it letting what your cutting off hang off just past where you want to make your cut.

      Jameson Cross - This knife, while opening with one hand, is not as easy or quick opening as a Spyderco. My "always carry" blade is Spyderco's Endura (4" part serrated blade - carried one prob 25 or 30 years, and miss the steel pocket clip), and I have a couple of Victorinox I routinely carry. This reviewed knife is one. Good blades all. Also look at the Wenger Ranger series: larger, heavier, about same tool compliment.
