    When I was in the Air Force in the late 90's my shop supervisor carried one of these. Bought one for myself and beat it half to death over the years. Finally retired it last month and got a new one to replace it.

      True but I own one anyway for outdoor activities i.e. bushcrafting/wild (stealth) camping, it pairs well with a Mora or other fixed blade, they're both illegal for EDC but okay if you have a ''valid reason''.

    I have the Ranger grip 78. I think it’s a great outdoor knife. I think it’s slightly larger than the trekker. I was searching for a non serrated trekker for months. Couldn’t find one so went with the ranger grip. I keep a firefly fire steel in the toothpick slot. Love it.

    I've hiked hundreds of miles w/ my 1-hand Trekker. The saw is fantastic, the main blade is nearly as good as a dedicated knife, & the tools are all essentials for me.
    I also have the Delemont, & while its just as good & better for hard use, it's substantially heavier & bulkier.
    I got a Swiss Bianco clip for my Trekker & it's just about perfect for the outdoors.

    I love my one handed trekker. Grew to love the serrated blade too. It performs way better then I expected. I bought a sential ( same design but straight edge but only the blade, no saw extra tools except for the scale tools). While I love the straight blade , I find myself carrying the trekker serrated blade more. mainly bc I use the knife to shred thru stuff while working and just out n about.

    Thanks for the review. The Victorinox 111mm series is underappreciated in my opinion. I love the Outrider model. I agree on the pocket clip, and Victorinox has a 111mm model called Sentinel with a pocket clip, so they know how to implement it.

  • @mikebsbd
    @mikebsbd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The delmont knives doesn't open very well left handed for those left handed folks. The blade and the saw is longer than the trekker. The outrider is also a nice option, however its not one handed opening. If it was it also would be a great carry option.

  • @apelsin19
    @apelsin19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great review as always, the new blades has a serrated edge about two-thirds and a straight edge the last third closest to the handle making it a great cutter with a nice straight edge for controlled crafting I guess.

  • @FreedomFox1

    Seems like a really ideal work knife, since it gives you a saw and mini pry bar to keep you from abusing the main blade. Replace the saw with scissors and philips and you’d have an interesting edc model.

  • @palerider7171
    @palerider7171 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the same model. The newer one comes with different scales that doesn’t have the tweezer and tooth pick slot but maybe thinner. Like you stated the blade was the main selling point however I was looking for a serrated blade for cutting rope and other fibrous materials. The arrangement may seem strange with a small section straight edge inboard and serration out to the tip but boy does that arrangement perform on stuff like paracord! It’s not really hampered in other cutting task either because the serrations are done right and even cuts through a paper test almost as well as a straight edge! Very happy with mine and thank you for sharing.

    The Trekker is the same as the modern standard military issue for the Swiss and German army. There is also a version for the US Army (not standard issue though). The difference between the Trekker and military knives are the scales (no tweezers) and the half-serrated blade.

    Victorinox выпускает отдельно для продажи накладку с клипсой.
    И это дешевле чем чехол.
    Нужно просто снять с ножа ту, что на него установили, и заменить.
    И получим нож с клипсой.
    Хорошее решение от Victorinox, хотелось бы увидеть теперь такие накладки не только для чёрного цвета, но и в других.
    Спасибо за обзор 👍

    Really like my OHT, so much so that a few years ago I tried to buy another to keep in the vehicle permanently. Only had the serrated versions available by that time, which was a show-stopper for me. Victorinox has another model, the Locksmith, that has the same straight one-hand-open blade at the original OHT, same tool set, linerlock, and an addition of a double sided file. Great review for a great knife, too, btw!

    I have been considering the Rangergrip 79 with the blade release logo button since I think the reverse action of the liner lock on the Trekker would be confusing. The hole in the blade may interfere with handgrip when using the saw. I do not have much use for a Phillips screwdriver when camping, yard work, or gardening which would be the main uses of this knife for me. The corkscrew could be used for holding fire starter designed to fit in the coils or used to drill holes or assist in undoing knots in a pinch. Replacing the toothpick with a Firefly ferro rod would round out this package nicely. The wire stripper is supposedly ideal for use as a striker on the Firefly. Too bad there are not more locking tools on this model. Having the awl/reamer on the end rather than centre would be my preferred location. The Farmer X Alox currently fits my needs nicely though one hand opening would be a bonus. The Trekker looks great but I am not a fan of serrated blades though I thought I saw a different model numbers on the Victorinox website ending with the letters N or S. Possibly this could be referring to non-serrated or serrated. A pocket clip option would be great though a suspension clip may suffice.

    I have the Victorinox RangerGrip 79 for big camp stuff blade. It is a sturdy workhorse as expected of Victorinox. It has an improved feature over the Trekker too. By pressing the Victorinox symbol you can easily access the difficult to press lock for the blade.

    While the OneHand Trekker is no longer avalable with the plain edge blade you can still get that blade in the "Locksmith". This model also adds a file with similar pattern to the one found in the SwissChamp only larger to fit 111mm frame.
    Since it pairs nicely with a LM Rebar the Vic's combo blade never bothered me and I rarely find need of the LM's dedicated plain blade.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep the ''Soldier'' is and always was the model currently on issue to Swiss soldiers (conscripts). In this case they adopted this model in 2008. The German Army however adopted it earlier in 2004, with smooth olive drab nylon handles, embossed with the German eagle. I'm a sucker for North European (Swiss, German, Swedish, Dutch) military kit and bought the Swiss army issued Soldier. I'd say the scales are a bit better with the raised antislip spots and they actually look like Adidas stripes.

  • @platonicmetal
    @platonicmetal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, Ben. I have a Soldier. It’s basically the same knife. I have a way to close it with the right hand. Holding the knife with the springs toward your palm and your pinky, ring, and middle fingers wrapped around the front, place your thumb on the springs under the opening hole and reach around with your index finger and press the lock over and then very gently nudge the blade until it barely moves forward. Then move your fingers to the scales (thumb by the pivot pin on the scale with the shield and other fingers lower on the other scale) and turn the knife so you can see the lock and press the blade shut with your index finger.
    WARNING: The lock depresses surprisingly easily this way, and the blade moves forward with little resistance. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU NUDGE THE BLADE FORWARD.

  • @duncdunc76

    You can actually take a pocket clip off of any other budget folder like say a Kershaw and if the screw holes fit on the scale of the One Handed Trekker you can get just drill to properly sized holes on the scale material that correspond to the size of the pocket clip screws if they were to be tapped. Then ya just screw the screws into the scale and the pretty much tap themselves. I did it to one of my OHTs and it works great. Its my edc knife and I work in construction and the clip holds on no problem in and out if my pocket all day long every day going on over a year now. One thing just make sure the screws your using on whatever clip you chose to use have short enough screws so they tighten down without hitting the metal backing plate on the OHT. If theyre too long they obviously woulnt tighten down. You could probably drill into the backing plate and tap it if ya had the skill. I didnt want to deal with the extra hassle of that.

    Just a tip; try unlocking the knife before you rotate it in your hand, ie push the lock open w/ your index finger, and fold the blade w/ your thumb.

    The Adventurer is a similar, non-serrated option but with no saw or one hand opening. It's like a large Tinker. However, it seems that there are 2 kinds of adventurer: a lightweight, camo one with aluminum liners, button lock, and no locking flat blade, and a red one with steel liners, a liner lock, and the large, locking flat blade driver. Both have no serrations. However, Victorinox made a knife called the Centurion, which is just like the red Adventurer but with black scales. Very confusing. Might make a good video.

      Yep Im a lefty and I Live my OHT! Its been my edc knife for like 15 years. Ive actually still got the first one I ever bought and it has an oblong thumb hole. It worked hard and is still functional but I like to get a new one about every 5 or 6 years as my blade takes some serious abuse and the Vic stainless is soft so sharpening is required from time to time even though the serrations stay sharp pretty decently. If Victorinox ever came out with a high performance hard wearing blade version of it it would be my holy grail knife.

    From the 50 available large knifes from victorinox, 49 lock and one doesn't. And the one which doesn't lock mmight just be wrongly marked as non locking. Because it locks like it has a back lock instead of a liner lock

    Thanks for giving straight up as you see it reviews Ben. I appreciate that. There are more than enough fanboys out there who simply will not give unbiased reviews.
    I have a standard Trekker and like it overall. A few replies I have are: the way the saw is canted backwards makes it unlikely to close while in use, and the covers are nylon -the standard material for 111 mm covers. Victorinox is obviously HUNG UP on plastic covers (especially Cellidor). I would love to see them overhaul the 93 and 111 ranges of SAK's, or perhaps even merge them. So many good things could be done with those architectures. I have a love for SAK's and hate seeing them languish in mediocrity.
