  • Hi there!
    In this video, I highlight the reasons why I loved living in Nova Scotia as a Newcomer and my reason for leaving the province.
    Go ahead and watch Chioma's video about the things she loves about British Columbia!

    Hi Feyi. Loved your video. I have worked with many native Nigerians here in Halifax and also remotely in Toronto. I really loved working with folks from Nigeria. So funny, very direct, but also incredibly kind, and Nigerians place a high emphasis on education. I've lived in Halifax for 10 years and I love the people, the quality of life, the proximity of the ocean, and the fact that the city of Halifax/Dartmouth is growing and there are more opportunities now than there were 5 years ago. Nova Scotia needs more people like you: happy, friendly, educated, and animated. I'm sorry we lost you, but I hope we can lure you back some day. I've been to all 10 provinces and have visited every major city in Canada, and for me, Halifax is the best balance of quality of life, cost of living, and people. I am very sorry that you had a racist experience here in Nova Scotia - that hurts. I hope that in the future more new Canadians like you choose to put down roots here and help make this province the place I know it can be. All the best to you.

    A few months ago, I was in the store, and told the clerk I was not feeling well. The young man behind me said, "Do you want a hug?" Yes. Then, his friend wanted to hug, too. And real hugs, for an elder woman, given with love. They were Nigerian students. I think the "friendliness" goes both ways. I'm glad you felt welcomed, and enjoyed the smiles, it's one of my favorite things to do, greet people and see them light up. Sorry for the negatives. Take care!

      Ah nice! How's Montreal compared to Toronto?

    • @icyfirefists
      @icyfirefists 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FeyiMac I much prefer it. It feels like a city that I can live in no shaking. Alot of the buildings are not super skyscrapers so you see alot of the sky and the areas around you. It is filled with multiple parks large and small and boasts alot of gorgeous vistas.
      The people are nice enough too. The Metro system also covers a decent portion of the island, thoguh they are working to cover more. Getting from one end to the other is much easier than Toronto in my opinion.
      As well, the French factor makes it so that everyday is a learning experience and so that the immigrants that typically come here are from a section of the world I dont typically meet people from. Senegal, Togo, Algeria, Congo, Morocco, Tunisia, and more. I get to learn about even more cultures which are actually closer to my home.
      Also as a black person i feel fine here. Maybe its cuz we have alot of black people here. maybe

    • @icyfirefists
      @icyfirefists 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FeyiMac Yes I am Bilingual. Most of it is school training at a high level but it is improving and i find it getting closer to being natural to hold a conversation in French.
      The job market is interesting. I work in tech(web developer). I would say it is healthy. I kept meticulous track of the jobs i applied to throughout Canada since January in an excel sheet. In general I had more engagement and interviews from Montreal companies than Toronto, even if the engagement was negative i still would get responses and now I have a job.
      Some companies don't need you to speak French at all, even if many people speak it there. Others require it hardcore and others are in the middle. They also look kindly on someone who is clearly making the effort to integrate into the language and pronunciation styles.
      It is a city well worth the time to visit if it ever crosses your mind. Obvi 2020 stay playing on us so travelling is a fleeting fancy.
      TLDR. Its a great tech hub and has been for many years. Dont let the French fool you, tech programming languages are ultimately written in English so you need to be able to understand to some degree. So English is in a way required.
      EDIT: I have been in Montreal for about 8 Months now so I have spent alot of that time fine tuning my French.

      I grew up in Windsor and currently live in Toronto. I visited Halifax and I am considering moving there. Windsor is slower paced than Toronto. It's hard for me to say exactly compared to nova Scotia since I was just there a few days. The people are much nicer than Toronto. Halifax people seemed like they are be nicer. The economy is not good. It's hard to get a good paying job there if you are not in certain sectors. That is the main reason why I moved. It is getting better. Toronto has more things going on in the city and variety in stores and activities. Nature is hard to come by in Toronto. Windsor has an ok amount. Not a lot of things to do, outside of various festivals and outdoor concerts in the summer. It's conveniently close to US for shopping and seeing concerts. It might be getting better, not sure. I moved in 2014. It has some US influence. Toronto and Windsor pail when it comes to outdoor activities and the beauty of nature of nova Scotia. It's has a decent amount of city things to for the amount of residents it has.
