For those old enough to remember, the Summer of 1976 was so long and so hot that people were literally PRAYING for rain - and boy, wasn't it just heavenly when it came! I've also noticed that extended periods of HEAT tend to make us Brits rather short-tempered. It's just not our 'thing'. A Californian summer would drive ME insane☹. No wonder there's SO many neurotics in that part of the world!

This year we've had hardly any rain at all all my plants had to be watered daily and I've never known it to be that dry. It does vary year to year though. One thing we are is very cold we don't really see snow if it does it will snow at night then be gone by the morning but that's just where I live. 10 minutes away they could have bad snow and it will stick, I find it depends how close to the beach you are

My wife and I live South East England, at home we only occasionally go to a pub but when we spent a week holiday in Windermere in the Lake District, we went to numerous pubs at least twice every day for the seven days. The pubs are a god send, so many of them you get spoilt for choice! The prices were so reasonable we ate out every night and most lunches. You can use them as a rest stop for a coffee and a sandwich or later for a few beers and a couple of cheers 🍻 a hot home cooked meal and finsh with a brandy by an open fire, no one bothers you, everyone is warm and welcoming even dogs are welcome especially in the Lake district. The secret to a good pub is this.. Remember 'pub' stands for 'public house' the clue is right there, make your customers feel like they're at home y'kno like you have a casual areas, dining areas, comfortable lounge areas normally with a large open fire, outside garden areas etc This is the sort of experience you get, certainly in Windermere ☺️

The British, particularly the English, have had a reputation for heavy drinking for close on 1000 years. It has nothing to do with living on a small island. Most people don't experience the place they live as small. Nor is the UK particularly crowded, even a very great percentage of the island is NOT built upon. Even in the most crowded areas there is still a great deal of open space. A big city in the UK is no more crowded than a big city anywhere else.
You must remember that the US was largely British for 150-70 years before it became independent, & even after that migration continued from the UK,
& most American's forebears only arrived in the US in the last 150-200 years. So the US has a deep background in British culture, which of course is aided by the English language, & has continued by regular contact through trade & popular culture etc.

I love wear my cashmeres in the colder days while walking to sweat.. Really feels good for my mental and physical health.. And I am getting accustomed to “bland” taste now.. I could not stand food that I used to eat .. The transportation is mostly good can get everywhere in the UK by train.. I used to be puzzled how people here would consider 15-30 minutes is a short walking distance.. now I intentionally walk an hour to get to the shopping mall to exercise.

Some years it gets unbearably hot, but when that happens you won't get your green, green grass.
So, you must decide which you prefer.!
    2) drunks - it doesn't happen anywhere near everywhere, and it's only at weekend nights (usually when the clubs are spilling out).

I understand what the guy is saying about the weather, but he is by no means 💯 right. We have our share of warm/hot weather too, but it can vary sometimes throughout the day. It's why we are such a green island. Its why British people often have conversations about the weather 😊. To me that excessive persistent heat sounds like a nightmare

The weather - the problem is, we are in the middle of 3 different weather systems. The British Isles are in the Gulf Stream, otherwise we would be more like North Canada. Then we are next to Europe, so we get a typical continental weather system to our East (very hot summers, very cold winters, predictable). Then we have the Arctic weather system popping in from the North. These 3 systems are constantly fighting each other, which means the weather is random. And also there is a chain of high ground running North/South down most of the country which acts as a watershed! ie. weird.

Where I live we need cars as we live rural. I actually don’t know anyone who doesn’t own a car where I’m from and that includes people in the city. I only know one person who vapes and nobody I know smokes cigarettes but I follow true crime creators on TH-cam and they all smoke 🚬 and all talk about their blunts as they all are cannabis smokers or gummies. I was shocked at how many did and they did it freely online. It all depends where you live in the UK i suppose but I was never into pub culture so I think he generalises a lot. There’s plenty to do besides smoke and drink and it was the UK who started all the fashion trends going back to the sixties. He talks about the weather but it depends again where you live as we don’t get the really bad weather as we are far north but we have the air from the Gulf Stream. There are places now in the US that are having snow already and we are lucky if we get an inch 😂. No tornadoes or mad weather or earthquakes and no dangerous animal species roaming around or snakes. JJ just loves the pub culture but it’s not for everyone. 😂

A visit to London gives an unrealistic impression of Public transport in the UK. Most UK public transport is sadly nothing at all like in London. When the Belgrade metro opens its first 2 lines at the end of this decade, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds will be the 1st, 2nd and 3rd largest European cities without a subway network.
Birmingham currently only has a single tram line, despite having 2.2 million people in its metropolitan area. Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh, Hull and most other major UK cities only have buses and no plans to build a subway. Ireland is even worse but in the rest of Europe, cities of that size usually have a combination of subway and tram lines that take you pretty much anywhere in town.
Another issue with UK public transport is that you have to buy seperate tickets or pay extra to use all the public transport modes in your area as bus and rail have completely different ticket systems.
It's expensive too. In Germany, it costs only €49/month to use all bus, tram, subway, monorail and local and regional trains throughout the entire country. In Luxembourg, they're free to use, while in the UK, many places charge £60/month just to use only buses within a single city and I've met people who pay over £1000/year for a train ticket that's only valid between 2 specific stops. This makes it expensive to just go exploring on bus and rail and you end up having to ration how much public transport you use. This is why a lot more people in the UK drive compared to on the continent. Many UK kids even get driven to school by their parents, while in other parts of Europe, they would use public transport. This creates an extra rush hour known as "the school run".

"We speak the same language". In ONE sense, that's true. Americans tend to use English GRAMMAR, however, as though they were learning a foreign language - and learning it BADLY. I mean, how the hell did they get to say things like "If I WOULD HAVE gone there..." instead of the correct, and much simpler "If I HAD gone there"? The other one of my bugbears is what I call the Intrusive 'Of' - as in "It's not too big OF a deal": what on earth is the 'of' _doing_ there?
As for their PRONUNCIATION of certain proper nouns, such as 'SEE-SILL' for Cecil, and 'BAY-ZIL' for Basil, I just dunno.
I know, I know - it _shouldn't_ be too big OF an annoyance, but I'm afraid it is, somehow!😀

I have to enlighten uou about the history of public transport in the US. Much of the US had great public transport similar to Europe. But the car companies may have encouraged many cities to remove their public transportation to encourage people to buy cars. Crazy I know but if you look at the history in many cases that may have happened. And given the usa is the wealthiest nation in the world there is nothing stopping the powers that be from building that infrastructure now.

When I see shocked my head conjures up something bad.

I find it a shocking misuse of the English language. 😂

As you said we do think our American friends are great, it’s some of the policies we have problems with, of which I’m sure the Americans feel the same way about us. On an individual level we get along great. Obviously we both have certain types of people who don’t show us in our best light. We’ve both got gangs and hooligans but thankfully they are in the minority. In fact it could be said of most countries. The rest of us generally just want a quiet peaceful life, don’t care where you from, your skin colour, religion, sexuality or anything else. If you’re good with me, I’m good with you.

For the smoking thing, I don't think as many people smoke as they once did, not many kids smoke cigarettes, my sons 19 now, but what I noticed was a lot of kids his age never actually smoked, they went straight for the vape because they thought they looked cool. Thankfully my son had more sense. Absolutely hate smoking. Disgusting habit.

Our prevailing weather comes in from the west across the Atlantic drawing much moisture . The west coast much wetter therefore compared to the east. Indeed the average rainfall in London is less than that of Rome. Should also be remembered we are a temperate climate and duevtome Gulf Stream we have relative mild winters. Our seas don’t freeze like that in the St Lawrence River, Canada/US despite much the same latitude. Can’t have it all ways!.

Pub culture can never happen in America as you have this thing that if someone drinks a couple pints a day then they have a alcohol problem which is stupid. Also your beer really isn't very good at all nowhere near as nice as European lagers or Australian. Czech is probably the best there is although I do have a taste for Cruzcampo.
