- This video , since I get a lot of emails and pm's on how and what I say to obtain permission to metal detect old houses. I decided to take you along from drive up , to getting out and knocking on the door , to hearing what I ask the homeowner to get the ok to metal detect for those of you who are wanting to start detecting older homes and farm houses..
Wow you just showed the real side of this hobby and how much patience it requires. Thanks for putting this up.

Pretty cool dude. I haven't asked permission for a house site in 15 years. I think I'd screw up and knock on the door and say " hey can I dig in your yard " lol.

A valuable vid; living in the midwest, my finds and experiences with permissions are similar. Like how you are respectful and considerate of people's comfort levels.
I like you videos and you info. If I can I would like to help you and give you a bit of help/advice. I've been in sales and marketing for 30+ years, I'm retired now. But once the person says "yes" to you that is like them giving you the order in sales. It's time to stop talking and take the order or in your case start digging.....lol Sometimes you can talk yourself out of the sale/dig:) just my two cents, take it for what it's worth from a successful salesman:)

If there is a "FOR SALE" sign, I will call the realtor and ask permission. The realtor is the owners agent and can give permission.
I done that several times with vacant farm houses , From my experience its a lot easier for someone to give you a no over the phone than it is in person..I did manage to get very few to say yes by calling but its always an insurance or in case you get hurt on the property excuse..

Nice honest video. It's the same way here. You might spend three days looking and asking permissions and it just takes that one to produce. Representing yourself is half the battle also when asking permission. I've had a lot of maybe's and just by looking around their property and seeing things of their interest, start a quick conversation and they generally will warm up to the idea because they feel like you have something in common. Takes a little more time, but sometimes will work out. Nice video Tom on the reality and the time and effort! GL & HH, Jerimy

Thanks , yes everyone definitely has to put the time into it , and sometimes have nothing to show for it ..Just letting some of my viewers who are just getting into the hobby know that I don't find old coins every time I go out , Like they might think from watching my videos ..But it is out there If they put in the time to find them .
Yes it is sad to see all the metal detectors on Craigslist list. That haves been barley used because the new metal detector guy thinks he is scoring silvers, Indian heads, walker etc all day long . The reality of the whole thing is lots of clad , beer tops and garbage . But with do diligence and hard work you will find good stuff. Plus patiences
It's getting tougher and tougher to find farm houses in our area that haven't been hit. But they're out there. We need to get Dave back up here for a weekend. He brought us good luck finding good farm houses. LOL

great video with more great info. thanks! On a side note, I ran afoul the same problem in that area. Talking to a local in Mendota, apparently there is a guy who works at the auto parts store there that hunts every free hour he can and has hit everything he could get access to in the region. He's terribly thorough and cleans a spot out of every last target before moving on.
Good video Tom . I've been waiting for a video like this , because I have been too shy to door knock . I learned a bit here & an ounce of knowledge gained is just as good as a few productive hunts .

Thanks for watching , when I was uneasy , I would usually try to find people that were outside to make it less uneasy ,since they were already outside , then after a few times I finally got the nerve to go up to the door and knock .And after a couple times of doing that , I started to get comfortable with it , the worse that will happen is they will say no . But you would be supprised on how many will say go ahead , and even offer you a beer !!

Good video thanks for making better luck next time. I have a yard to do by asking while stopping at their yard sale. It a 1890 house and the guy been living there since 1960 it hasn't been detected.

I try to spread the word that I detect through family, friends and co-workers to get permissions ...never had the guts to cold call on a strangers house yet.

It seems to be one extreme or the other here in the south. People either happily say yes and love to see what you find or they can get downright offended that you even asked. I had one gentleman in particular who was really nice and even turned out to be friends with some of my family but he got borderline mad when I asked about metal detecting an old house on his property. His words were "I don't really like the thought of that, I've had too many people sneak in there and steal things from the old house and I'm not about to let somebody just carry a bunch of stuff off". I had been assured that he wouldn't mind but obviously that wasn't the case. That experience sort of put me off of cold calling people so I've relied on friends and family members to ask people they know.
You gotta stay away from those "Silence of Lambs" type houses! :) That's just creepy!!! Thanks for the helpful information! Best of Luck and Happy Hunting!

Thanks for watching , wish I could of got some im not sures , or some easy or hard no,s , so I could show how I might of talked them into it..I know most people go about asking kinda the same , but just wanted to show some of the people who are just getting into detecting , and the ones who ask me on how I ask for permission . And also show them that its not always as easy as finding old silver and other old coins as it seems in my videos , and that I do get skunked on some days !
nice info. just wondering why i haven't heard you introducing your name. maybe it you said it behind the scene, yeah. introducing to the home owner can give good impression or if you have a calling card it would help a lot as well. if i may add.

It is nice to give your name the first thing. One thing I worry about is what if you do find several silver coins, and when you show the owner they want all of them and give you a hard time? I know you mentioned it and I would just do my best to work out a deal, giving them the better deal and move on.
That is always a personal choice for each person to choose ..If I only find say 1 indian penny or a v nickel or buffalo , I would usually just give it to the homeowner since I have many that I have found . silver coins on the other hand I usually don't show , I will usually give the homeowner something to show thanks for detecting It can be anything from an old relic coin ect. I had that happen in the past , and most of the time they don't really have any real interest in wanting everything you found, but a few actually did. chances are if you show them a barber dime and the most value on one that's common is only worth a few dollars . but to someone that has never seen one before might think its worth thousands , so I tend to shy away from showing any silver finds , but will often give something I find back to the owner.. its basically a decision that would be up to you or each person detecting ,

I was once detecting a park and someone came up to me asking what i've found.
He recommended me to detect cemeteries. I laughed it off but it was weird how serious he was.
Im sure cemetaries would have old coins that were lost , but its more of an ethical thing to most to not even think of detecting in them ..

thanks for doing that, gives me a Lil more courage to do a door knock, Idk why it's such a difficult thing to do but it's just kinda nerve racking and I knock on doors for a living....I deliver pizzas lol don't know why asking to detect makes it so much harder. anyway thanks
Ask people if they would control their dogs!! Only if you don't mind leaving the site anyway :D Try and find a good historical map online. Help you find permissions ! First house is 1800's for sure. Keep @ it and HH !!
Thanks for watching , I usually do try to find the older towns first , then look around on google earth , but sometimes I will just "freestyle" it , and take a drive on some backroads to find that old mid 1800's farmhouse .. That house in the thumbnail Is definitely civil war era , and its been vacant for a long time , and the owner don't let anyone on the property ..

Im usually in the woods also in the spring and fall , this time of year the mosquitos are thick , along with the over growth ..Door knocking is definitely the way to find old coins if it hasn't been hit before .
I detected an empty lot where a house had been torn down a few months earlier so it wasn't overgrown or anything and I was only there about 2 hours and came home with 2 freakin ticks on me!!! It was right beside the street and wasn't really in the woods at all. So I vowed never to do anything near the woods again... 😂 I felt so disgusting that I took an hour shower!! So I stick to the beaches and parks!!! Haha!!

Yes , I will usually say the same thing. I never show them the silver , but I will show them the wheats, clad or I will even give the owner an indian head penny. because chances are they never seen a barber dime , and they would think its worth hundreds of dollars and they would end up wanting all the silver . had that happen a few times , so I just show everything else ...once you get the first couple times door knocking out of the way, the nervousness will go away , and you will be a lot more confident at each house you see that looks good to hunt.
Are you hunting in Iowa, do you live around Iowa City, I heard you mention Ottawa, so was just wondering? I live in Council Bluffs, and have hunted pheasants, quail, and deer all over Southwest Iowa, but I've never did any metal detecting before, am saving up to get one, getting older now, so I can't swing the gun up as fast I useto, so hopefully here soon I'll be able to do some swingin with a detector. lol.
I was in Ottawa illinois. I'm not too far from Iowa. We detect a lot of old towns around the illinois /Iowa border.

yeah, I always move to the next house if the home has mannequins in the back yard...with forks and butter knives stuck in their eyes....yeah, that's peggin' the ole creep scale for sure.

Just curious why you did not metal detect the old barn area?
My personal experience around barns is there is so much trash . Yes , Im sure there will be coins or relics , But the front yards will almost always produce with the minimal amount of trash in the ground . Plus , Im a stranger to Homeowners , and I want them to feel as comfortable as possible By only asking to do the front yards . Yes some will not care and let you have at it and not care , but most people wouldn't want someone just wandering around out of sight depending on the property..

Great ideas and I totallu agree with having permission this would be a little too extreme for me to maybe find nothing at all or a couple of green Indians just because the house is old dosent mean you are gonna find anything you know within a short time of its gonna turn up anything and also its not good to give up too much information because then as was said you got them following you over the yard and theres nothing worse than that and you have headphones on and they are talking to you like you can hear them so you have to keep taking them off thats the most aggravating thing ever its pretty self explanatory one would think, then it just totally throws off concentration, or they let the dog out, etc I am just picky I guess and I cant see going overboard with doing all this when it could possibly turn into a nightmare. I usally know a person who knows a person I've found tossing names out there or finding some sort if tie is better than running blind why would I wanna spend all this time and money for a potentially stressed out day and no I am not saying it may always be like that but yes it has happened, ive been to pleanty of places that are older than old only to get permission and find out they have a foot of fill dirt from over years so you are digging memorials at 8-9" deep and I know for me it is very awkward knocking on just a random door you can't get everything you need to say out fast enough. Then you dont know if you are gonna be attacked by a massive gaurd dog, or gonna scare the shit outta someone might get shot, theres just too much room for failure, when I go out to detect I am going out to detect not to waste my day or be in a goofy situation thats why for me ive found it best to know soneone who knows someone or when you are driving home and see a farmer In the field off his tractor or what have you stop and ask then, then he says yes and doors are opening and you get to kinda know him shooting the shit you can get into his front yard then you can ask him about other farmers that who knows he might eat breakfast with or is related its a chain reaction, but as to just pull up to a random house in the country not for me way too awkward. This is just my thoughts only everyone has there ways I am just making suggestions to someone who might also feel awkward about random door knocking. Happy and Safe Hunting Everyone!
That's exactly why I don't really do it anymore ! too much wasted time driving around than digging targets..Yes its easy silver or whatever , But there is no history or adventure in detecting someones front yard .. Plus in the summer when there are dry spells I wouldn't want to make brown patches from plugs. I see so many people on youtube that door knock and don't place towels down or dig shit holes just for a coin to add to their Yearly count ! I like to work for my finds , and I like the challenge of finding things and the adventure of it in an old river site or wooded area where it once was a park and think of what the places were like 100 plus years earlier . I don't get that with detecting in someones front yard . Yes if I see a really old farm house or someone I know owns one then sure I will stop and ask , or detect it , But to just waste a day and only detect for not even an hour driving around isn't worth it . I rather detect a Chicago park a whole day and spend that time digging targets and find one wheat penny then drive around door knocking and find a handful of silver coins .. To me its about the hunt and history of it than how many silver coins I can find for the year ..
Another thing is how many other people had the same idea about these old homes if you ran across it then so did about 10-20 other people who detect or else you go through all the trouble of getting in and get pumped up and start digging memorials at 6-8 inches now thats a kick in the teeth if ever there was one. Its best to hunt non visable sites thats when you are gonna find the good stuff

Useful! However it seems most of these dudes were pretty much ok with it but you kept talking to defend yourself, a little uncomfortable. Still good stuff.
