The "deep pixels" theory carries over to the Q as well. I picked up the original Q recently. I shoot it alongside my Sony sometimes and there is simply something going on with that Leica's sensor. The Sony has double the res and GM glass. The old Q still just has this "deep" quality that isn't in the Sony.
Thanks for this, you really just put my mind at ease. I just went from a M-D 262 to an A7RIV and now going back down to an M10-D. While the 61mp files from the Sony are fantastic, the files are just to clunky to deal with. I was really worried I was going to miss the extra resolution by not going with an M10-R but your video really helped me realize the increase from 24 to 40 really isn't that big of a deal.
Do you think third party lenses ie. Zeiss or voigtlander would be able to resolve all that resolution of the M10r or just stick to Leica lenses to get the most of it
I shoot Sony A7r4, Leica Q2 and Hasselblad 907x, all 40mp plus, they fill up hard drive, slow in post processing and I don’t print wall paper size the big size is overkill. I sometime shoot Nikon Df which is 16mp and it’s perfectly fine to print 24x20, so 24mp is more than plenty and m10p color looks warmer and more vibrant to me. I would go with m10p.
Maybe the sun poked out of the clouds more/less that altered it but I agree, the P looks more "3D" and Leica-like. Like Matt was saying about the "deep pixels." I think the P has larger deeper pixels than the R just due to maths
Great video! Street photographers often don't have the luxury of being able to compose the perfect shot. The M10-R will give such photographers an ability to 'zoom in' that they don't have with the M10.
Have you found that you must take extra care when shooting with the 40mp M10-R to avoid getting less sharp pictures due to handheld camera shake (compared to the 24mp M10-P)?
I noticed that for a second you hesitated between the B and the 8 seconds dial position . This is because of the font face that Leica is using. I wonder if anyone ever lost a frame because of this.
ISO and time limits makes total sense. Since raising ISO is effectively just increasing gain, then the longer the sensor is capturing light at higher gain, the more heat issues you're going to encounter. Besides, if you're shooting a 4 minute or longer exposure, realistically there is zero reason to use any ISO higher than base.
the only thing I like about the R over the P is more pixels... I don't like the slower buffer, larger file sizes, design (red dot, no engraving on top)... I will wait for the M11P before I upgrade.
Very interesting. The colour was the most noticeable difference which on the M10-P it had a significant magenta hue in the sky. It would be great to see a similar comparison between the SL2 and M10-R.
Little Dua you can’t compare color until Adobe has released proper RAW processing files. This always takes a while after a new body is released - a few months, sometimes longer.
I have read setting WB to 3900k for astrophotography is correct. I’ve done that with my SL and it looks good. Your thoughts and how do you set up WB in long Star exposures.
No - current firmware does not allow to switch-off automatic noise reduction in any currently available Leica rangefinder camera. But wait for the news from Leica this year ... I have some speculation that might help :)
Large prints is not a reason to go from 24 to 40MP. Photoshop will fill in the pixels for you when you want to print. The only reason for 40MP is if you crop.
Great video, thanks! It raises a few questions, though: It’s interesting that a 100% zoom is so different on the images given they were at an identical starting point - is that a Capture One phenomenon or just standard for images of different pixel size? Also, what computer do you use and did the file sizes of the R slow things down appreciably?
It also happens in Lightroom for me. With the same Camera but also every time you use two pictures with different sizes, that's not just a thing with this cameras. On the Computer performance. I only use Mac, so I dont know how Windows/ Linux goes with editing lager files but for me I didn't really made a difference on a MacBook Pro/ I Mac and also not on a MacPro but I think it really depends on the software you are using and your computer specs. Normally 40Mp shouldn't be a big problem..
Great video! Did you use the same white balance on the 2 sample shots? I was wondering about eventual differences in color rendition, and the M10-P image has more of a pink tint to it. Thanks for these informative videos! Cheers!
Was that me or those two cameras are going through some mid-life crisis upgrade. D: golden lens, bottom plate, and all the 'accessories' ... Like a ricer car :D
I'd like to ask you about the differences between b&w output from the R vs the M(onochrome) model, because I'm absolutely stuck in the middle in terms of deciding which will be my first Leica camera.
The Mono is superior. You will never achieve the same quality of a monochrom sensor by converting a color RAW into B&W. I am going to test this week the new Leica Q2 Mono - it will be fun :)
@@mathphotographer on the other hand, last week I've been testing the M10 R and I'm still impressed by the colors... Superhard decision, but a logic one: color + not that good bw instead of monochrome only. As a fuji and sony user, I never thought I would say Leica is superior in both color science and user experience. Indeed it is.
@@mathphotographer leica Spain lent me the Q2 M a few weeks ago for a test. It looks film like, specially wide open, and build construction is far better than the M10 series, imho. On the other hand, with the M10M you have a whole universe of lenses, and I admit AF makes no sense to me when I'm using a Leica and recreating certain philosophy.
Superb review with your landscape photo with lots of subject matter ! So many reviewers don't take the trouble to show a proper assessment . Yes , most of us looking at this on a computer screen would be happy with the P Leica .
Great video, but when printing you will not see a difference between 24mp and 40mp. they will both print the same size print with ease, 24x36 is not an issue. You do get an advantage if you crop but as you show in you video, it isn't that much of a difference. I've printed stunning 17x22 archival prints with my M8.2 which is 10mp. The pleasure in owning a M10P or R is the advances like touch screen, conductivity and an improved Visoflex with GPS. Also the shutter on the M10P is the best ever, so quiet and smooth. Both cameras are amazing, a joy to use.
The M10-P has that pinkish WB that's been characteristic of digital Leicas. The M10-R favors greens and seems to have a more neutral approach. I think reds and browns are more intense and vivid on the M10-P. Just look at the pinkish clouds, the browner barn and the less yellowish grass (more dark green) on the M10-P (15:21).
Excellent video. Great and relevant comparison. Can't wait to see the SL2 against the iQ4! I have an SL and an iQ4 and have been debating about getting the SL2 - can't wait to see if it's worth it (although my shooting with the iQ4 and the SL is completely different). It'll be a great comparison! Take care and see you tomorrow! 👍
I would rather use an external shutter release cable plus a timer and a Leica M9 with a real tripod socket to have a camera plate permanently attached than this stupid inaccurate long exposure mode which just sounds like a marketing gag for a camera you even can’t put on a tripod in a comfortable manner. I will wait for the M11. Hopefully Leica will get the bottom plate right again (like they did on the M8 and M9) and use the old style three way on/off switch again. Simple is good until it gets unusable. What are they thinking in making a camera of this price range worse than its predecessors in terms of ergonomics?
Great reviews matt, keep them coming. Curious as to why the hard limits of the shutter based on high iso? Sure you don’t want to streak the stars, but what if you were slowing down water or something else?
Thanks for this comparison. I wonder why Leica hasn‘t used the 47mp sensor which we find on the SL2/Q2. I‘d love to see a comparison with this new 40mp sensor in regards to detail, dynamic range and iso-performance besides the more subjective aspects (which you probably call deep pixels). Thanks for considering. The comparison of the 187mp multishot and the PhaseOne MF cam will be revealing too.
