    Love the setup, everything in its place and nothing hanging out or flapping. We started touring a little last year and look to do more this year. Thanks for posting, got some great ideas now!

    Well, wonderful. Planning to cycle Chili, Bolivia, Peru up to Panama next year...
    Whooo, the music reminds me MARCEL DADI- best french picking guitarist. I'm from Belgium and went to see him playing. Unfortunately he was on the Panam plane that blew up living the US about 15-20 years ago. A very sad for the music community... Lovely video. Thanks..

    Hi Pamela, I am a new subscriber to your channel. I wanted to let you know it's a great video. I am planning a bike camping trip this weekend with my kids a little south on the same trial from you. This is a first for us on our bikes and with the kids. So thank you for many ideas as I get things ready today. Luckily we have all our lightweight gear from backpacking. We are also pulling a trailer since the kids are only 6 and 8 for our camping gear. I was afraid to add to much weight to their bikes. I just added a back rack to my bike with the bags that clips like yours. Im glad to see you like that bec. I bought two knowing one would go back. One has the clip the other just laided over. so you sold me im going with the clips.

    Excellent video, gave me lots of ideas. I have those same Ortlieb bags and am getting ready to use them for my first time with my 14 yr. old son on the C &O canal in June, D.C. to Cumberland. I hope to do the GAP next year. Thanks for the video!

    Great little video with sound tips. My wife and I are recently retired so we bought bikes partly to keep active. now we have cheap panniers which seem ridiculously small but do have the roll-top system so hopefully will be proof against the occasional Scottish rain shower! I will subscribe and look forward to your trips.:)

    Here are a couple of my tips. Make a list on the computer of every item in each bike bag, labelled rear left/right ,front left/right, reduce it to fit on A5 and laminate it. Then mark front and rear panniers with capital R/L with a permanent marker, so at a glance u know the position each bag sits on the bike. Strap the laminated list on to Bar bag, or front panier and at a glance u can find instantly, which bag contains the item u need. Having to empty every bag to find an item thats needed, is not fun.

    Pamela, Awesome video! I just so happen to be planing a bike trip with my 13 years old around the same mile markers on the GAP. It's only going to be 2 nights of camping. The bike my son is riding has a rear rack and panniers to go along. My cross bike does not. Im sure i could get some that adapt but my question is do you think you could do the ride on the trial with 2 wheel kid trailer? I see a bunch on Craigs list for about 50 bucks (surely much cheaper than getting a rack and bags to go along with) I could throw everything in the trailer and go. Thanks again for such a great video!

    Thank you for sharing this video. May I ask what size is your Ortlieb rack pack?

  • @alantaylor8281
    @alantaylor8281 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should try replacing the large rear rack pack with a pair of ortlieb front panniers. They will balance the bike much better, giving you much better bike handling.
    Enjoy your cycling on future trips, and stay safe on the road.

    Everyone has their own way to load their bike. Lots of factors, lots of options. What I noticed from this vid is that for some reason you choose not to ride with fenders and in my opinion, that's a mistake. A lack of fenders means all the ride grime and dust to sloppy mud covers the panniers. Minimal weight and when properly mounted very sturdy and keep you clean and dry. They do come with some associated problems like when you have to clean mud out or even remove them because of mud, that has happened to me twice, But the convenience outweighs any negative points by far. imgur.com/a/sMmcPgv

  • @johnmiller2132
    @johnmiller2132 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Pamela, I like your set-up. I have those Ortlieb panniers, which are great for me.
    How much would you suggest that big white Ortlieb bag? It looks like you could fit a fair bit of stuff in there, but it would be tempting then to overpack at the rear and have a lot of weight on the back wheel.
    It looks expensive also, how much did that cost?
    I'm an Australian currently planning a trip through the Americas and am thinking about different packing arrangements, so thanks for your video.

  • @KitsuneNeko

    I found this useful! I feel too cautious to carry around a propane or gas fuel tank for fires so I'd rather carry around Coghlan's Emergency Stove and burning tablets. I would just hate for the tank to leak and fumes contaminate everything stored with it. But I think that's just me and my weird worries. XD Have you ever gone on any bike camping with a dog in tow? I'm not planning on going on any tours or anything... maybe just a leisurely camping trip but using a bike as transportation instead of a car. "Tour" makes me think traveling cross county or even state to state travel. There are plenty of Natural parks in my area so I don't have to travel far. I pretty sure part of my travel kit would be including lots of sunscreen and bug repellant as I live in good ol' swampy Florida.

    What kind of bikes were you two riding ?

  • @mgmirand
    @mgmirand 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pamela, I loved your setup. We are considering a month journey with the same Ortlieb threesome in the back.
    My concerns were two, having the bike's weight too unbalanced towards the back, and not having a place to fit my tent, but the 31 Lt seems big enough. Otherwise, can you fit anything over the rack and then place the big bag on top and still strap it to the panniers?

    • @asoshkin
      @asoshkin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Matias, this is Pamela's husband. The weight was a little unbalanced towards the back in our setup, but only when you get off the bike. When you are riding the bike I did not feel any weight balance problems. If you are thinking that you will carry as much as we did and want to balance the weight better, then I would recommend getting smaller ortlieb panniers for the front as well. Our tent is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus Tent which fit perfectly inside my waterproof 31L bag. If you have a longer size tent that will not fit inside the rear bag, you can just bungee cord the tent to the rear rack. My Only concern in that is, I do not think the tent stuffing bags are waterproof and will make your tent wet when you ride in the rain. Good luck. I hope I have answered your question.

      I purchased the CASTELLI Leggera Cycling Jacket at a local bicycle shop, you can find them online, one bit of info, they run small. And the "shower bag" is just a lingerie laundering bag that I purchased at the Dollar Tree, I like that the mesh breathes just in case some of my shower stuff is a little damp. They sell them 3 in a pack! Use what you have!!!!

    I have the same panniers, that I use for commuting. If I were in you, I'd have taken a trailer like Burley Travoy, instead of that big white bag, perhaps too heavy for the rear wheel and rack, in particular, I shouldn't want to stress the frame and the rack retaining screws. Having said that, thanks for the ideas, I have copied them

    • @asoshkin
      @asoshkin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ugo Bertoletti Thanks for your comment. We were looking at getting the trailer like you mentioned, but I think it will be harder on pushing the trailer as there is more friction with the third wheel. And I want the least resistance when you are at a constant climb from 250 feet in elevation to 2400 feet in the first 25 mile ride up to the Eastern Continental Divide.

  • @1650million
    @1650million 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very useful, thanks.
    One thing I don´t really understand is why many bikers like you guys choose the 31l rackpack instead of the 49l. Yes you do lose the convenient attachment straps, but wouldn´t it be better to get a MUCH more capable bag than the 31l adding just a few cm more in width?? 7cm total, or 3.5cm per side, sounds like a minimal compromise compared to the volumetric benefits. Am I missing something here??
    Thanks

    • @asoshkin
      @asoshkin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      1650million One big concern is the weight. With 31L carrying food in one and tent and tools in the other was getting to be a little back heavy as it is. For our needs on this particular 8 day trip I found that I did not miss the extra room at all. Besides that 49l is too big for carrying it on the back. It is intended to be used more on the bike cargo trailer like this one. www.bikewagon.com/bob-yak-plus-single-wheel-bicycle-trailer?CAWELAID=400006350000360012&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=400006350000472323&cadevice=c&gclid=COabqtjcx8UCFQiRHwodJUEAqg

    It's obvious that your personality is one of complete thoroughness.
    But you're not at home, where you have everything in its certain place.
    You're on a bicycle tour.
    You really don't need half of that stuff, learn to ruff it a little.
    I'm not ripping on you but you seem like the type of person who is a bit of a perfectionist; everything needs to have it's place. And nothing can be out of order, or do without.

      Very inspiring too.
      By the way, do you know how much weight you were carrying in total with all your gear?
      I too am a bit of a perfectionist. I like weighing all my gear and each pannier. Just so I know what I'm carrying to compare with other bicycle tourists.
      Without food or water I'm at 41.5 Lbs total in gear weight.
