Good to see a young rider using a full frame pump. More than one time I have stopped to help a rider on the side of the road or trail with a pocket-sized pump or CO2 cartridge that did not fill the tire. In the past year I have switched over to stainless steel water bottles. I carry one pint and one liter bottles. Check out the new bottle holders that hold 1.5 liter and one liter water bottles. The water tastes so much better than plastic bike bottles. I pick double walled like new Stainless steel bottles at the Goodwill for $2. New $25 to $35.

i just converted my trek 3700 mountain bike to a touring bike and the difference is night and day,got some road tires for it, bar ends,pannier bags,rack and just to be safer thorn resistant tubes and slime tire liners

The BEST cooking stove is the "PRIMUS" it allows for simmering which most stoves don't. It only cost $20 and is available for sale almost anywhere like Target or REI. The flash boil was always hard to cook on because the heat control was always hard to manage and too hot. For a pot I recommend the ''''MSR Seagull" its stainless steel, easy to clean, and doesn't have any of those coatings to wear off. Great video!!

I tried the minimal thing? yeah, not for me - I was so uncomfortable sleeping being a big guy and old I want my comforts and i'm not in some race so I take what works for me. But I'm only carrying say a couple of kilos more. But that's me. Tarp - The Tarp is king, tents come and go but tarps rule. I now take a small and very light 2 man pop up and the Tarp which covers the tent, my gear and my bike. It weighs nothing really and in a hail storm or snow storm during the winter it's the bomb! I carry one bag of food according to the trip. 3 days food for six days out, I will buy food en route and add to the local economy from Farmer's markets and the like.

I am also planning a trip for this summer, so that is how I got to be browsing videos and found yours. I also have the jetboil, but I do not think i will bring it with me just because of the focused flame... It's great for water boiling, but nothing else.
I was thinking about buying a therm a rest like yours, but it seems it will not fit in my solo tent... so I will cut one of my old foam mats and make it the size of the tent :)

Very cool! Sounds like a fantastic trip. Watch out for wild dogs when you get into Serbia through Romania.
Get the Primus stove, I simmer rice, cook eggs etc., on it. It allows for a very small flame!
Some good tips. I'm setting out myself for a few years starting in a few weeks, and trying to take in as much as I can. No doubt I will have packed too much, but I just don't see that yet :)

Nothing too fancy. Just the standard Outdoor Products Coated tarp - www.rei.com/product/842320/outdoor-products-coated-tarp
Buy steel pot and pan. Yes, it weighs more but you can beat that thing and it won't budge (if you have high quality steel of course ;)). Initially I was also considering buying aluminium or titanium pot with special anti-stick coating but then I reconsidered because of how fast the coating wears off. Plus steel pots and pans can also be used in the fire, which is great if you think you might have to light up something other than your portable gas stove.
Aluminium conducts heat fastest, is by far most efficient. Steel is in the middle and cheap, plus as u said great for log fire. Titanium is awful for pans due to slow conduction of heat, great for the stove itself, cutlery etc.

I would put valuable items like laptop on right side and lean the bike on the right side, even do like you i mount and dismount on the left side, the reason why I do is because if when leaning the bike up for any given reason and it might unintentionally fall over both valuable items and derailleur are less likely to be damaged.
Good point. Usually with a fully loaded bike, the rear bags with soft sleeping and clothing helps buffer the fall so valuable things are shielded from damage (including derailleurs).
Amazing set up I keep mine real small just a couple of small panniers if it cannot fit it in it does not come.
This video was made a while back and my setup has changed quite a bit but not too much.

A good video and exactly how I pack my bike. Do you ever carry an EPIRB tho? Just in case things do go wrong. I dont leave home without it, just an extra piece of security.
I do not. If I was traveling along long stretches without services, I may consider one. But most of the time I’m close to civilization.

Yup. They are still water proof even to this day (7 years later). Of course, there are newer bag design and technology I would explore but I'm keeping my panniers until catastrophic failure.
Great Video! I'm Setting up for a tour this summer. I am in the process of getting gear. I'm debating between a rear rack with panniers or seat post bag. I've heard pros and cons of both. I have a specialized pizza rack and bag for the front. Can anyone provide a perspective on the rear carrying portion of the bike. Thanks
Are you riding off or on road primarily? The seat post bag is great for off-road usage but will not be carry as much as with a rack/pannier setup. Seat post are lighter than the rack/pannier option. Lots of give and take but you have to see where and how you're touring.

Edit: Yep I fell asleep. Also saw you use the MSR Dromedary bag. Do you find there is an after taste to storing water in this bag? Reason I ask is, I was going to get these but then saw a few comments in reviews from people who had purchased them and they all mentioned that were really rugged but there was a strange rubber after taste in the water which put me off so I bought the Ortlieb ones instead which are food grade and have been brilliant no after taste what so ever, they're 4 and 10 litre bags which I put inside Ortlieb PS490 heavy duty 13 and 22 litre dry bags.
You need to get a new tent! Go for the MSR Carbon Reflex or the MSR Hubba Hubba HP or the Elixir all 2 persons. MSR tents are so good and perfect for cycle touring with a door each side, each with their own porches to store panniers. Really good space inside as well owing to the pole system. Also MSR wind boiler stove is much better than Jetboil stoves. I have both.

Hey Alex! Yes, the MSR Dromedary bag does have a plastic taste to it. When I'm out on the road and need water, it doesn't bother me as much but it does bother my brother-in-law. Thanks for the alternative recommendations.
The Hubba Hubba is definitely in my crosshairs but I'm not in a market for a new tent as I also just jumped on the hammock shelter recently.

Hey you said at the end of your video that your weight distribution was 60% on the front and 40% on the back. Would you mind explaining why that is? In my experience, whenever I tried to put more weight on the front, my handling control was way off. So I always ended up going back to putting almost all of my weight in the back. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
+OrphicTrench The reason I have more weight up front is because the bike stabilizes since my weight is added onto the rear when I ride. I find that the bike shimmy when going down hill if I have more weight in the back. It is a challenge to maneuver the bike but with a wide handlebar, which I now use, it helps with control. There's no right or wrong way to do it, just try it out and if you don't like it, go back to what you have, which it sounds like you did.

It balances the bike evenly during the ride as you are on the back of the bike.

Honestly, I only use it on longer solo rides. These days I've been leading long rides as a job so I don't bring those.

Small gears. It's actually not that bad. I've ridden up 21% grade with all that gear. Worse case scenario, there is no shame in walking.

hey guys, how do you secure your bikes in campsites?
Cable locks and park it near our tents. Never had any issues. Places like Ventura, California (Emma Wood SP) cable lock won't do as I've had friends who had their bike stolen in the middle of the night even with a cable lock. Huge transient issue there.

I wonder how much of the 48lbs is just racks, packs and packaging? I am guessing 24lbs+. I don't know how you still do it this way after much touring. It is your choice though and I respect that some people do things differently.
My configuration has evolved since this video. Actually, it changes on a trip to trip basis so this isn't a end-all, be-all configuration. It's a good balance of comfort off the bike versus comfort on the bike.

A tip for you. The bottom of your fry pan fins as you called them is a "Heat Exchanger" and are not exclusive or created by jet boil. There many and long time stove makers that use heat exchanger tech. MSR long before jetboil. Also it's a terrible design to be used on a fry pan as you have learned its to high of a heat and concentrates the heat to hot spot on the center of pan. Jet boils are the worst and so so limited in there use. They are strictly for boiling water. Try a msr windboiler line or the primus eta models with matching pots you will be blown away. I been doing stoves for 30 years and let me tell you that is the way to go. Also seem seal your tent that's 90% of your leak problem. I have been doing this since we used to ride with leather helmets and wool jerseys and shorts and wooden cleats.
Thanks for the clarification. I'll be sure to look at the MSR Windboiler or Primus ETA models. As for the tent issue, I did apply some seam seal as soon as I got back. Looking forward to using the tent again in went weather and see how it did. I'll still have a tarp ready, just in case.
When using a tent many times much like you had to try to fold tent in different ways as well. Be sure to not wash a tent in a washing machine with detergents doing so really takes the waterproofing of the tent out. Kudos for using a full length pump.

But do you think that all that stuff is" really " necessary. Would it be possible to cross the USA like NEW York to San Francisco with less gear ? Maybe pick some stuff up along the way if you need them. I mean 22 kg, kind of scares me a bit :)
Probably not everything is necessary but I've traveled enough to know that this is what I like to pack whenever I take on a long journey which balances both weight and comfort. Also, I have not packed the exact same way in any 2 trips. Each trip has different challenges or different requirements so there isn't a one-size-fits-all method. Each person is different so you may not bring the things I would here. I know that through time, my packing methodology will change as my equipment wears out and I swap things out. Hopefully for lighter things. This is an evolution. Weight has never been a huge consideration when I go on bike tours. I know that I have enough gears and that I feel that I am physically fit and prepared before I embark on these adventures. The important thing is to just get out there and do it. I highly recommend doing a dry run with all your gear for an overnight trip or a weekend trip before you embark on a longer endeavor.

the stuff works wonders! be safe out there. im looking to do something similar in about two years time. the rout is a self tailored. google say it will take 8 month to do. but i would lean towards more like 10 months to do. if i calculated it right going at google stansard speed at 10 mph ill hit florida at the 5 to 6 month mark. the hight of NY's winter! i gotts family and friends up and down the east coast so i can slug/snail it up to NY.
It'll take us 3 months but I'm joining half way. Should be done by August! Good luck on your trip!

However, it would be so much better if you had more video time of the items you were talking about, and not so much your "talking head" shot where the item you are talking about is not seen. -- It's kind of like watching a show where an interesting person is being interviewed, but you see only the interviewer ... and not the person being interviewed. I've seen some other videos of yours. I greatly enjoy them, but they have this same difficult problem. Just a tip.

Hey Doug! Thanks for the reminder. I have a kitchen pannier at 6:09 mark of the video. I show all my kitchen stuff and some standard staple like peanut butter & Gatorade powder (7:47). Food is going to vary from day to day so I can't possibly show everything that I bring but there is definitely enough space to go grocery shop.
When I did a trip recently I got my pack down to 4kg and a 6kg back pack inc water( and no rack weights at all) , thanks for the list though, I knew I had forgotten something ;>) check out Alpkit's bike packing stuff too, for shorter and lighter touring.
I'm working on purging things and making my load lighter but this is what I have at this moment in time. I have no doubt this will change as I continue to tour more and more.

Yes, it was and I've traveled this way across the US several times and EU in 2015 with this setup without any issues. The key was having enough gears to spin up so that I've never had to walk any of it. Also, I have no problem walking my bike. There isn't a hill I've ridden across that I couldn't walk.

That's a staple. I didn't include food in my pack as that varies depending on where you travel. This setup gives me plenty of space to pack in food on any of the 2 front panniers.

Thank you for your opinion. I would agree with you on it being a heavy load but not unnecessary stuff. I use everything I bring and feel very comfortable riding with this load and enjoy every moment of my tours. This may not suit everyone but this is me sharing my haul. Thanks again for your opinion.

I respectfully disagree. The bike is so much more balanced but to each their own.
Oh yeah? Well I thought you made a mistake... From my experience, you don't want to much weight in the front because it is harder to steer. Most cyclists I heard said you should have less weight in the front then in the back. Like you say, everyone has his own preferences!
take a look at his front panniers :) they are lower than the back ones. I would pack with more weight in the front ones too.
