    Stopping by to let you know I completed a tour of 2000km through Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and England.
    All done on a real tight budget, 8Euro Panniers, 3euro computer and managed to find some really cheap cycling clothing too costing just 16euro for the full outfit. Mostly Stealth camping cheap cook set ect.
    Thanks for the inspiration, was a great trip and am so pleased to have done it.
    Keep on Peddling

    I toured on a beach cruiser with a springer front end and ape hangers. Heavy wire baskets on the back and carried my things in duffel bags that I threw in the baskets. Nobody told me I needed anything else to tour. I rode that bike all over the place for years. Funny thing is, when I tell people about it on bike forums, they act like I'm lying or it's impossible. People are wrapped too tight in the bicycle community. People spend a ridiculous amount of money on things they are told they HAVE to own in order to tour. I had as much fun on my really cheap bicycle as anybody has ever had on a $2k touring bike. People miss the point... it's about the experience, not about how much money you invest into the bike.

      yes I toured for a week when I was at school some guy did it on an early 80s mountain bike and I on an over small racer for my age but we did it and ill never forget that holiday or the hills lol

      I know how you feel HATE BIT POET I'm even more looked down upon by upright roadies and MTB guys both literally and figuratively because I'm a recumbent triker... and I plan on adding e-assist everyone seems to think we are lazy and cheaters... but I put all my effort into it... the only reason for e-assist in my case is the hills and a few sections of rural highway in my area that you have to travel to get to the nearest backroads or trails... which can be up to 20 miles depending where we are going...

      LOL! Maybe you had as much fun while riding but I guarantee that I have had more time riding because I didn't try to short it on cost. Sometimes just doing something isn't enough... doing it right makes all the difference. You could skydive (once) without lessons or the cost of the chute if ya wanted to save some money, it seems silly to advocate for it though. I put over 4K miles on last year... what about you? - This is my primary gear:

    I have. Clipless no. I am a 100% comfort rider which includes many stops and activities off the bike. I don't wear bike shoes or shorts and use a comfy seat. These choices don't increase my speed or efficiency just my enjoyment level. Lots of other reasons why I don't clip in but it's not important. Find what works for you and go with it. Thank you so much for the compliment. Ride safe!

    I was getting thoroughly demoralized reading about touring set-ups realizing that if I looked too much at them I was NEVER going to go touring as I'd never be able to afford to do so. I have done a bit just using my MTB with a rear rack and a pair of panniers. You have given me some good ideas as to how to improve my set-up without spending loads of money.

    I can't believe I found this video. I'm planning a tour through the Swiss alps and I'm solving the exact same problems you've already solved! I thought I was clever for mounting a rear rack in reverse in the front, hehe. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, this is great material.

    Very cool. I have been riding an inexpensive Giant Escape 2 for commuting into work the last few years and for short treks on weekends. Really love it. I was going to buy an expensive dedicated touring bike for a cross country trip this Summer...but then decided to convert my Escape instead. It has a long chain stay & wheelbase, so it’s perfect for mounting racks & panniers.

I've recently gotten back into cycling after years of only an occasional ride, I have several beach cruisers because it's what I find most comfortable and single speed suits me, but I do have one touring bike I have been putting together and you have really motivated me. Thank you.

    love the video, i'm in the process of converting my mountain bike to a tourer. not for any serious touring just days out, but i like the look of a tourer. i found your video very informative. i like the idea of everything being inexpensive. like you, i like to do everything myself, its much more satisfying. my bike is an old mountain bike which i stripped down repainted and rebuilt. again great video, hope you will post more in the future

    Well done brother, a lot of people got cut up with expensive brands when you have more options if you look around and have a little of creativity. Very nice, thanks for giving us these tips. I use my bike as my primary means of transportation and travel here in Tucson, AZ. I have spent many nights ruffing it over the years and need to start doing some longer, more rewarding rides. I have 2 Giant Sedona's and I'm going to switch all the components from the 2013 to the 2009 because I like the frame style of the 09 much better than the newer series that Giant began producing in 2010. After that I am going to start outfitting it for long distance self contained travel. Video's like these have given me much to consider and are very helpful... Great job, I'll check out some of your other videos...

    Hey ... Take a look at the WALD MULTI-FIT PIZZA-BOX Front Rack. I just got mine and have not yet mounted it but it seems like it will be great for my HILL-TOPPER e-Bike battery pack and my USGI ECWS Modular sleep system (military bivy/bed-roll). Thanks for giving us permission to not spend an arm and a leg. It certainly does all add up. My touring conversion totalled over $300 and that does not include panniers. LOVE LOVE LOVE my BURLEY TRAVOY (though spendy).

  • @CommonCentsOutdoorsman
    @CommonCentsOutdoorsman  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Start riding with no load at short intervals then increase your distance and time in the saddle. Your backside may hurt at first but will toughen up in time. You may buy several seats before u find the 1 for u. Once you can ride about 20 miles with no strain, start adding panniers and weight. You should be able to ride your daily planned weight and distance 3 days in a row before you set out on tour. These are just general guidelines... so many variables involved. Good luck my friend!

  • @linguisticness
    @linguisticness 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I wish you'd said more about installing a rear rack in the front. I've never thought of doing that. Seatstay and headtube angles aren't usually the same, so did you have to modify anything? I'm currently setting up a new touring bike and hoping my old Nashbar front lowrider rack will be compatible with disc brakes.

    @luigifan809 Excellent question! I do a lot of night time riding on poorly lit, narrow roads and I'm a bit of a light freak. @vedranre I agree... the stronger the wheel the better. These 32's are what I have and I'm pretty easy on them. The suspension also helps preserve the wheels a bit. For some reason these stock rims are fairly strong and have held up fine after thousands of miles. I will get better wheels in the future.

    @andrwoo Hey thanks, I enjoy making them and have fun! Yeah, this is confusing... mine was called the "Elite" and has some different features such as a rain cover that stores in a bottom zippered compartment. It used to be advertised along side the "Deluxe" and then it disappeared. I can access my old order and it shows "item not currently available". The Deluxe looks like mine but I'm not sure what all the differences are.

    Thanks for a great video! I also made some notes on a touring bike I built @ vedranre - please take a look.
    In my experience, wheels are often the weak link on many inexpensive off-the-shelf bikes. Touring bikes, more than any other kind, need super-strong wheels. My Fuji Touring came with substandard, poorly built wheels... I had to learn how to build wheels in order to have a proper touring wheelset. I think 32 spokes is typically ok for the front, but 36 or 40 (even 48!) is best for the rear.

    I put 3,070 miles on a 1998 ( I'm guessing), Raleigh SC-200 in the 2 years I rode it. 2 weeks ago, I bought a 2008 Specialized Sirrus Sport that supposedly was only ridden for about 100 miles from my local bike shop. The suggested retail on the Sirrus was $850, I paid less than half of the 2008 price. A person traded it in for a Roubaix, the cheapest model is $1750.

    I did a 160mile bikeride with only a backpack and let me tell you, it's not the best idea. I had nothing but the basics a coat and spare clothing in there and the weight from the shoulder straps cuts the blood to your arms. It was my first over night and long distance bikeride and it really slowed me down and well as being quite uncomfy. That said it was just a bog standard backpack so maybe if you get a really good cycling one (if they exist) it might be ok

    Been over a year since you posted this ... Time for an update? ... I like your bar-ends and the fact that you can use that mirror WITH the bar ends attached ... What brand/model of bar-ends ? ... I am not just asking out of curiosity ... I have that mirror on order and would like to get some decent bar-ends. I also have some similar fenders on order but mine are ~48 mm (pretty sure) and I have 41mm tires so ... Yeah ... Spent between $50 and $60 bucks for mine ... Axiom, I think, like my rack.

    Touring equipment does not need to be expensive or the latest technology. My tourer is built up mostly from old 1980's equipment and the various racks I bought cheaply. I did splurge on a Brooks Saddle and a Carradice Camper Longflap saddlebag though.

      cyclist01222 - A bike mechanic told me that the top of the line XTR stood for eXpensive To Replace and that most pro riders just use the less expensive middle range group set because they work just as well and are cheaper to replace when you break them on MTB tracks.

      Just remember that you can make a lot of your own equipment as there are " instructables . com " and some different ways of getting by cheaper. I made my own panniers as the material is available and far cheaper than the manufactured ones. I also made them to fit in the wind shadow of the back of my recumbent and only feel them starting out and up a hill. The less you spend on stuff that looks nice , it gives you more to enjoy your tour.

      @@brucewmclaughlin9072 well spoken Bruce... I've got a recumbent trike and I have been creating some of my own pieces for it because of the exorbitant prices on things manufactured for recumbents... they think just because you spent a ton of your hard earned money to purchase the bike that you have a ton of disposable income to throw at everything...

    Some do it but it can make you top heavy depending on what you carry. Bike rides better with a lower load. Also it's more comfy... backpack = sweaty back. That's why I don't even use a water bladder.

    Could have mounted the rear rack onto the seatpost binder bolt. Bike Nashbar has random deals, just order from the internet site. Adjustable stems are surprisingly heavy, I always remove them and replace with a lighter stem.
