On the Road With 1522

- The age of steam may be long gone, but in St. Louis there was a link to
that bygone era. Frisco 1522 was a fully operational
steam locomotive that ran on occasion.
In this program, you will see SLSF 1522, (which is a 1926-built 4-8-2
Mountain-Type engine, built for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway) leading the Employee Appreciation Special for
the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway, and then pulling a trip at
the National Railway Historical Society convention in St. Louis.
While on the BNSF Employee Appreciation Special 1522 puts on a great show
as she pulls the train from Tulsa to Oklahoma City, then on to Ft.
Worth. This is no amusement park train just chuffing along, 1522
really gets up and goes!
Features:
*Running on her old Frisco rails in Missouri
*
Pulling the Employee Appreciation Special in Oklahoma and Texas
*Pulling the NRHS convention special from St. Louis to West Quincy
and return.
*Plenty of scenes where the locomotive is really working.
If you like steam locomotives, then you'll want to see one of steam
railroadings shining stars as she helps people young and old relive the
mighty days of steam!

it was in St. Louis Missouri that frisco 1522 is on the run!!! Good for her!!!
I love Frisco 1522! What a beauty. I love her whistle sound as well.
I saw Frisch 1522 at the museum in St Louis last year. She was beautiful.
I've seen the preview for this program but never got the chance to see it entirely, so this will be a special treat for me!
1522 will live on as the only mountain type to be used on excursions. long live the frisco 🥂
I still have my hopes for her to still keep that title one day.
I hope so
CN 6060 was Also used, not sure beyond that but other mountain types have been used besides just her.

Frisco 1522 has been one of my favorite locomotives of all time. Without of doubt, Frisco 1522 is still one of the most recognizable and most famous steam excursion locomotives in the US. It would be fantastic to see her back on the rails again. Although, it maybe not going to happen anytime soon. Hopefully I'm wrong, all the above great video.
It was very cool excursion trip with Frisco 1522. On going. It’s kinda sad that the locomotive isn’t possibly returning back to service anytime soon. Coolness. It’s another beautiful locomotive.
Never say never. :P
@@jimmyhook4852 Certainly not going to say it.

Nice video!
57:20 That statement would definitely make the front page of r/agedlikemilk. Though, I don't think her running again is impossible. But funding and manufacturing a new flue sheet to replace her bad one is hard, but I do not think that that's impossible. That or maybe I'm just a bit too hopeful and not drowned in despair like everyone else.
You got a point
I love the narration about it.
10:48 All aboard for Tulsa!
I remember when watching this as a child I wanted to see this engine in operation so badly. Sadly, I’d learn in 2018 at the age of 16 that it retired in September 2002 just 8 months after I was born as I was born in January 2002. I still hope to see this engine someday as 1522 is my sixth favorite steam locomotive and it sure is a shame she’ll likely never run again as the Museum of Transportation has stated many times it doesn’t want to lease or sell the engine as not only has it been a big part of St. Louis history but its flue sheet is cracked and would need to be replaced.
I guess with enough time & money, this Mountain type will run again.
The chances are very unlikely. As I said, the museum doesn’t want to get rid of it, sell it or lease it out to someone to use it. Hell, it doesn’t even have a place to run so rebuilding it to operational again wouldn’t be worth it if you ask me.
@@atsfevan0242 You never know.
After all... stranger things have happened. :)
At least we have UP Big Boy 4014, and soon Engine 557 in Alaska.

No….it doesn’t.
@@SuperFoxyRailwayProduction6702 I wasn’t talking to you, hoss.
Mark my words.... I know that hopefully one day... Frisco 1522 can get the chance to run again once more. :)
I mean... she is getting ever closer to reaching her 100th birthday in 2026. ;)
Unfortunately, the National Museum of Transportation has stated that a return to service is not possible, largely due to the locomotive's flue sheet being damaged beyond repair. A new one would have to be fabricated, and new flues would be needed before another steam-up.
@@andrewcrumb8027 I'm aware of that time and time again. :/
But I'm still hoping and dream no matter what for 1522. She is My No. 1 Favorite Steam Locomotive after all.
Cause after all... there are those that also agree with me in hoping 1522 can run again once more, seeing that they also have her at No. 1 as well.
@@jimmyhook4852 I know. I hope that 1522 will run again too. I didn't mean to upset you. It's just that the museum needs money to pay for the new boiler flues and flue sheet for the locomotive.
@@andrewcrumb8027 Yeah
I wonder if funds can be made for the boiler flue and flue sheet. I also wonder of the cost these flues in the past and in today’s money.
I wonder what happened to Frisco 1522 today.
It’s at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.
She retired from excursion service in 2002 due to rising insurance costs, repair costs and lack of access to the mainline which lead to the SLSTA discontinue running it. That and they also didn’t want to allow new members to join them which is kinda a big reason they are no longer around.
It was fun while it lasted, but we do have other steam trains that run excursion trips like UP Big Boy 4014 in 2021, and Nickel Plate 765 in the early 1990’s and other scheduled excursions in this century.
@@jhoshuathomas6899 indeed
Hopefully it will run again one day

Can the Frisco 1630 run on the mainline outside of the Illinois railroad museum
No. It is land locked at IRM
