For shiny objects, we had this trick at the office when we were using a FARO arm scanner and made the part easier to scan. We took a spray can of athletes foot medicine and spray it over the part, this let a thin white layer in which the scanner was able to pick up the surface features with no problems. Sprayed layer cleans up easily

You can also use dry shampoo for hair. It leaves a thin white layer on top of the object which you can wash off with water. Or you can use baby powder, solve it in alcohol and use a pump sprayer for plants to apply it.

Nice review of this scanner. Seems there is a lot of things to be aware of regarding the limitations. Choosed to back up this project at kickstarter. It was the face scan that sold me. Quite detailed. Have tested a couple of high priced scanners before, with less results than this. Hope there will be a v2 with higher details from the same company.
I'm blown away by that statue scan at the end. The performance of this thing is really impressive. I wish you'd shown the color scan ability but I can get why you wouldn't being predominantly a 3D printing focused channel. At 269 with any confidence at all in the company that's an instaback but only more expensive tiers are left. Also are these guys the OEM for the Creality CR-T you mentioned? They sell the exact same scanner as the Tanso S1.
This is pretty cool. I normally use photogrammetry with my Nikon DSLR camera, but for making masks, this will be a very handy tool to have. And the price point isn't bad either. Now for scanning outside during the day, best area to do so is in the shade or on an overcast day. How is the colour map detail?

I've used an older Creaform Handyscan to do a bunch of car projects, I've been looking for an affordable 3D scanner for myself for years since, this is the first one I'd consider on par with the performance of a 10+ year old Handyscan, a piece of hardware that cost 25 000$ back then. I'll try mesh mixer but for mechanical parts I might go back to Geomagic Studio.
The results from the statue scan are pretty amazing. Being able to portably scan large outdoor objects and then scale them down for 3d printing seems like a gamechanger.

im definitely keen on getting my hands on one of these. I am trying to replicate some old car parts that no longer exist including quite a few from the silvias etc. this may just be in the price range that gets me in the door as the kinect didn't quite work as well and requires far too much clean up to look remotely reasonable.
I use some expensive industrial scanners at work. Get some spray on indicator, it's a white powder in a spray paint can and it makes things visible to the scanner that are difficult or impossible for scanners to see. It's normally used in conjunction with penetrating dye to check for cracks when testing parts, but it works great for 3D scanning and it just wipes off super easily.
Even better, professional grade sublimating scan spray has dropped a lot in price the last few years with upcoming brands like aesub not charging an arm and a led like the big names in scanning used to, those will give you an even coating super easy and vanishes in a few hours without any permanent residue or damage to the surface.
I've been curious about this thing! I'd love to see it tried out on some car-scale things. Like could you scan a fender or a whole car to for example design a body kit? Or could you scan a wheel well to measure suspension mounting points?
Thank You for this review (and your other reports too). I also had the same experience with the xbox scanner, and the lidar-assisted scan with the iPad pro does not work properly either. That's why I supported the kickstarter campaign, which is interesting for price / performance, and now I'm excited to see what it can do. Professionally, I know very precise systems (GOM, Shine, etc.) - but hardware and software are priceless. It can already seen from the technical data that the revopoint does not work perfect for small, detailed figures. The high detail resolution of the SLA printers can only be provided e.g. by dental scanners. It would also be interesting whether larger objects or e.g. rooms / areas can be scanned with the revopoint. I also want to use it for vehicle interior scans - it's not easy because of the black surfaces. Have you tried shading (like camera lens hoods) on the Revopoint during the outdoor scan?

You completely skipped over the most important flaw of this camera (maybe you were just being nice). It FAILS to scan black!! You showed us the scan of your face, but you didn't notice your hair wasn't there?
The only thing I'd add is the scanner's reluctance to scan black objects. Maxing out the gain will pick up a black object and still scan Ok, but I'd suggest baby powder or spray paint to whiten it up. Note, this isn't terribly uncommon in scanning, but still something people should know before shelling out (being black items are likely what you are looking to scan). Also, he touched on it, but only did a drive by... for me the software was uber buggy. I think its good software, as far as feature, but reliability/use is another thing. At its current price around $650 for the full kit, I think its overpriced, but somewhere down around $400 would be a sweet spot for its abilities.

The software for MAC is non-existant. Doesn't work at all if you don't have USB-C with at least 3A of current capability. Also, if you use a phone, you have to setup the phone as a hotspot in order to connect (odd and wonky WiFi SW).

All scanners that use lasers will have trouble with dark and shiny surfaces. Spray on developer for magnafux ads a thin layer of white powder that is perfect for scanning and wipes off.
Gotta say it's pretty stunning on iOS (my sister loves apple products so I had her install a few apps during xmas and wow) - but on android we dont get shit. I guess it would be hard for a dedicated team to come up with something that works and that can be sold on such a wide variety of devices with varying processing power, resolution, optics, whether or not they can do stereo etc etc.... Sad thing. I'm about to spend 150€ on a simple face scan all in the name of designing my own perfectly fitting covid mask with tons of useless features .... That and getting the perfect fit next h'ween :3
You should Look at Intel Realsense, this Sensor seems to be a 415 or the new 5xx... Intel has an Open source SDK, I have no Idea how to code...there are a few Android Apps using those Scanners, but you need to have USB 3.1 OTG Smartphone, which I lack, so No testing at the moment and my Main computer ist a Mac, so hard dir me to get that SDK running
I've been pretty happy with my results from photogrammety using my smartphone and Meshroom. As long as you do a bit of prep to get some trackable features in your scan area you can get really detailed models effectively for free. (Assuming you already have a decent camera and PC with NVIDIA cuda cores.) It does take a ton of PC time to process all the pics though.
Since it connects to a phone I'm assuming an nVidia card is not required. I have 2 high end scanners, one I'm reviewing for TH-cam right now and both require either an nVidia card or a lot of video ram. My laptop has neither so any scanning I do is limited to how far the cord can reach from my desktop.
Have you tried the method suggested in Prusa's video *Photogrammetry - 3D scan with just your phone/camera?* It would be interesting to see how it compares with the Revopoint POP
Photogrammetry from what I see has more trouble with glossy surfaces. However being that most people have a mobile phone already, it is a great free option.
Probably a lot of those still in the deep dark corners of some warehouses. Bet they got a great deal for 100 000 cables to use before perhaps upgrading to USB-C eventually.
Looking forward to trying mine when it is all done. It would be great if you tried some of the white developer spray on some of the partly shiny objects like the resin print. It might bring up the detail significantly.
I would be interested in using this scanner to print objects that contour well to the human body, especially high gradient areas such as the face (ear, crease of the nose, chin, etc). Do you think it has the accuracy to scan such features well.?
The hardware for 3d scanning is relatively easy, just a projector (IR or otherwise) and some cameras. The problem is the software and calibration. All of these things use cheap low resolution sensors yet if you were to try to set up your own 3d scanning setup you would have a rough time if you can't program and don't want to fork out hundreds. There are so many open source projects that arent maintained/ do not support the end user. Projecting light isn't *that* hard and high res cameras are super cheap. its just the conversion. we just need a dedicated open source programming group to get this to the hobbyist level 3d printers are. I spent months trying to scan with a pico projector and a DSLR and I could have made it happen if the software was just a little bit more there.
i have the pop i love it like you i have had many scanners over the years from laser to projected light and infra red and photogrammetry and i think this scanner in my view is one the best home scanners with accuracy of 0.3mm and now the new pop 2 is out with accuracy of 0.1mm is a game changer making the pop2 equal to my expensive scanners that cost 2 to 3 times more. thanks for the video. :)
Creatity CR-SCAN01 allegedly has a resolution of 0.01mm. But this model says it's 0.03 mm and I see a great detail on the faces better than Creatity's. Any ideas?
That is sweet. I myself get to play with a Leica 960 lr with t-probe and Leica scanner at work with Polylworks. This "scanner" looks legit, but it does require reflector dots to find its geometry in space?
The real problem these scanners face is that if you drop $500 on a nice DSLR camera and get Meshroom for free, bam, you can now do much nicer scans easily AND you have a camera that can take beautiful photos. Not convinced by these depth sensor scanners yet to be honest. Their resolution and capture rate are too chunky. Being able to use black gloves and turn an object in your hand to scan it though is impressive. Can't do that with photogrammetry (or if there is a way to capture all sides of something with photogrammetry, I haven't figured it out).
I am looking for a budget friendly 3D scanner to help with design for some off-road barwork and underbody protection for my project 4wd. Do you think the POP 3D would be a viable option? I see that you have a couple of project cars on the channel, have you made any videos using this device to scan one of you vehicles?
Hi, what about the scanning of your hair ? As it's black didn't you have any trouble scanning it ? Other reviews indicate that scanning a black hair is nearly impossible, what do you think about it ?

Good to see a review on this which really sets expectations....its good, but not great. Yes its only "$300" ... which is "$450+" if you live in AU, but when you buy an item like this you usually have something in your mind to use it for. This kind of review sets the expectations, yes i can scan i large statue or a pot plant.....but If i wanted to scan a mini to copy it, then no dice. As I tried to make the point in a review on another channel, the "needing to to a bit of work to clean it up" doesn't really cut it for most people, as to be honest with something like a mini figure , if you had the skills to reapply the detail the scanner missed, you could really just model it yourself. Same goes for scanning peoples heads....yes it gets the face really well, but unless you have a bald head or crewcut, you will need to remodel to get a full head out of it
About 20 years ago (really) a company came into my work to demo a set of tools, all of which seemed insane at the time. 1- a 3d scanner which worked by using a wand which was monitored by cameras. 2- a resin 3d printer, much like ones you get now but huge and slow 3- the missing part. They had a pen input to 3d studio, which was on an articulated arm, with which you could edit the object in 3d. It had movement resistance from 0-100% elasticity in the materials, you could actually poke holes in membranes, and with your eyes shut, you'd swear you were actually interacting with a real rubber surface. Someone make this, and I can finally get this whole set up I dreamed of for a grand rather than the £500k it was, and I will admire you as a true hero.
Nice! I was bugging them about getting something to show dimensional accuracy and they posted a bottle they scanned and measured that was well within most tolerances for prototyping without any manipulation! I would still love to see the last thing I posted to them done which is to either 3d print or just drill different sized holes in a piece of wood, scan it, 3d print it and compare it to the original. I think that is a torture test but I could be wrong (which I am, a LOT). Wonder if you put a black sheet (or any dark color) behind iron man when you scan it if it would pick up the gaps and fingers any better...just thinking out loud.
Thank for this video far more informative than the ks one, test by real user is what I was waiting for. Entry level scanners begin to be very cool. My plan is to scan some of my old car model in big scale, so I can 3d design part that fit more easyly after printing.
Have you tried this on something like an engine block with multiple holes at different heights ( I imaging the scanning spray would help with this)? Would be a great tool to help a hobbist design parts. Thank you for the video, I have seen this a few times and just ignored it till now.
Honestly. The last project I backed on KS was at least 3 years ago. I typically avoid KS projects with relatively low funding goals because they tend to be the ones that fail (hello Peachy Printer) or wind up being through underwhelming on delivery. Thanks for this video as I trust your test far more than the KS marketing.
Thoughts on adding an external IR light source to the top of the POP, to try and boost the scanning? No idea if it will help or make it worse though...

Give the tech another year or two and we will have real working 3d scanners that we can carry in our pocket. This tech in the vid is honestly quite impressive for the price point and I may get one myself.

baby powder with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle is cheap and works perfect too. alcohol dries quickly and the power blows off with duster easy.

The thought crossed my mind but I have yet to try it.

Have you tried the Windows based scan on Kinect V2? also can you try the Azure Kinect for $400?

It seems the scanner still has a problem with dark hair. Also would a polarized filter sheet work for shiny surface scans?

What is the minimum requirement for a computer to stitch the mesh together, I have heard that memory is a big issue.

I am curious if you can scan a reflective object like a car, as this is what kinect struggles hard.
Have you tried the method suggested in Prusa's video *Photogrammetry - 3D scan with just your phone/camera?*
It would be interesting to see how it compares with the Revopoint POP
Photogrammetry from what I see has more trouble with glossy surfaces. However being that most people have a mobile phone already, it is a great free option.
I've only tried Photogrammetry a long while back, not any of the newer methods from the Prusa video. I will get them a try at some point.

WTH Is that USB3 connector?! Why would they use the old and obsolete "micro usb3" instead of a USB-C connector?
Probably a lot of those still in the deep dark corners of some warehouses. Bet they got a great deal for 100 000 cables to use before perhaps upgrading to USB-C eventually.
Looking forward to trying mine when it is all done. It would be great if you tried some of the white developer spray on some of the partly shiny objects like the resin print. It might bring up the detail significantly.

I would be interested in using this scanner to print objects that contour well to the human body, especially high gradient areas such as the face (ear, crease of the nose, chin, etc). Do you think it has the accuracy to scan such features well.?
I would say it is best at faces and likely bodies. The large statue was a goo scan but the face scan impressed me the most.

can you get exact measurements of scanned object?
The hardware for 3d scanning is relatively easy, just a projector (IR or otherwise) and some cameras. The problem is the software and calibration. All of these things use cheap low resolution sensors yet if you were to try to set up your own 3d scanning setup you would have a rough time if you can't program and don't want to fork out hundreds.
There are so many open source projects that arent maintained/ do not support the end user. Projecting light isn't *that* hard and high res cameras are super cheap. its just the conversion. we just need a dedicated open source programming group to get this to the hobbyist level 3d printers are. I spent months trying to scan with a pico projector and a DSLR and I could have made it happen if the software was just a little bit more there.
i have the pop i love it like you i have had many scanners over the years from laser to projected light and infra red and photogrammetry and i think this scanner in my view is one the best home scanners with accuracy of 0.3mm and now the new pop 2 is out with accuracy of 0.1mm is a game changer making the pop2 equal to my expensive scanners that cost 2 to 3 times more. thanks for the video. :)

Creatity CR-SCAN01 allegedly has a resolution of 0.01mm.
But this model says it's 0.03 mm and I see a great detail on the faces better than Creatity's.
Any ideas?

That is sweet. I myself get to play with a Leica 960 lr with t-probe and Leica scanner at work with Polylworks.
This "scanner" looks legit, but it does require reflector dots to find its geometry in space?

The real problem these scanners face is that if you drop $500 on a nice DSLR camera and get Meshroom for free, bam, you can now do much nicer scans easily AND you have a camera that can take beautiful photos. Not convinced by these depth sensor scanners yet to be honest. Their resolution and capture rate are too chunky.
Being able to use black gloves and turn an object in your hand to scan it though is impressive. Can't do that with photogrammetry (or if there is a way to capture all sides of something with photogrammetry, I haven't figured it out).
I am looking for a budget friendly 3D scanner to help with design for some off-road barwork and underbody protection for my project 4wd. Do you think the POP 3D would be a viable option? I see that you have a couple of project cars on the channel, have you made any videos using this device to scan one of you vehicles?
Hi, what about the scanning of your hair ? As it's black didn't you have any trouble scanning it ?
Other reviews indicate that scanning a black hair is nearly impossible, what do you think about it ?

Good to see a review on this which really sets expectations....its good, but not great. Yes its only "$300" ... which is "$450+" if you live in AU, but when you buy an item like this you usually have something in your mind to use it for. This kind of review sets the expectations, yes i can scan i large statue or a pot plant.....but If i wanted to scan a mini to copy it, then no dice. As I tried to make the point in a review on another channel, the "needing to to a bit of work to clean it up" doesn't really cut it for most people, as to be honest with something like a mini figure , if you had the skills to reapply the detail the scanner missed, you could really just model it yourself. Same goes for scanning peoples heads....yes it gets the face really well, but unless you have a bald head or crewcut, you will need to remodel to get a full head out of it
Try the iPad lidar scanner
Handheld structured light scanners are just as quick as this, and will be of higher detail.
Consider the Einscan devices.
Point is they're stupidly expensive compared to this.

Well spotted. when I did the work in their BMW, the sponsor of that video didn't want any logos so we used the tape to cover those on the laptop.
About 20 years ago (really) a company came into my work to demo a set of tools, all of which seemed insane at the time. 1- a 3d scanner which worked by using a wand which was monitored by cameras. 2- a resin 3d printer, much like ones you get now but huge and slow 3- the missing part. They had a pen input to 3d studio, which was on an articulated arm, with which you could edit the object in 3d. It had movement resistance from 0-100% elasticity in the materials, you could actually poke holes in membranes, and with your eyes shut, you'd swear you were actually interacting with a real rubber surface. Someone make this, and I can finally get this whole set up I dreamed of for a grand rather than the £500k it was, and I will admire you as a true hero.
Nice! I was bugging them about getting something to show dimensional accuracy and they posted a bottle they scanned and measured that was well within most tolerances for prototyping without any manipulation! I would still love to see the last thing I posted to them done which is to either 3d print or just drill different sized holes in a piece of wood, scan it, 3d print it and compare it to the original. I think that is a torture test but I could be wrong (which I am, a LOT).
Wonder if you put a black sheet (or any dark color) behind iron man when you scan it if it would pick up the gaps and fingers any better...just thinking out loud.

Thank for this video far more informative than the ks one, test by real user is what I was waiting for. Entry level scanners begin to be very cool. My plan is to scan some of my old car model in big scale, so I can 3d design part that fit more easyly after printing.
What is a thready scanner?
Have you tried this on something like an engine block with multiple holes at different heights ( I imaging the scanning spray would help with this)? Would be a great tool to help a hobbist design parts. Thank you for the video, I have seen this a few times and just ignored it till now.
Honestly. The last project I backed on KS was at least 3 years ago. I typically avoid KS projects with relatively low funding goals because they tend to be the ones that fail (hello Peachy Printer) or wind up being through underwhelming on delivery. Thanks for this video as I trust your test far more than the KS marketing.
Thoughts on adding an external IR light source to the top of the POP, to try and boost the scanning? No idea if it will help or make it worse though...

Give the tech another year or two and we will have real working 3d scanners that we can carry in our pocket. This tech in the vid is honestly quite impressive for the price point and I may get one myself.
