To be fair in gen 4 and 5 Caterpie gets more useful moves like STAB Bug Bite, Electroweb and Snore. And other strategy for gen 3 he is playing - would be Struggle strategy, as well.
Well he was using string shot before, so, even though only one of the strategies was viable, it was still a different strategy.

Not only did Kevin choose one of the hardest challenges, but he chose 1 of the few challenges where he has to use struggle, and one of the few challenges that might actually not be possible because Caterpie gets no moves. But the hardest part of the challenge is complete!
I feel like getting through Mt Moon or sailing to Cinnabar Island will be harder than defeating BUG CATCHER SAMMY, CAMPER LIAM and BROCK tbh

It's going to be interesting when Kevin comes across a ghost pokemon, seeing as Caterpie only learns tackle and string shot.
Struggle can hit ghosts, but that'll be a very painful discovery.
@@steved7777 That's the thing, he would have to run through string shot and tackle for every single Caterpie for EVERY ghost - and there's plenty of those in FRLG. I don't see it being very feasible.
@@mark012498 So the plan would be to fish up a wild magikarp and then use up all of your PP against it, and only after you're out of PP do you fight the ghost trainer. At this point you'll probably want a lot of potions so you can heal yourself without going to the Pokemon center.
Luckily, there's very few ghost types in FRLG. I think there's only the Pokemon Tower and Agatha in the Elite 4, so he won't have to do it too often. Though Agatha will be very annoying. Personally I think the strat would be to go into the elite 4 with 2 of the caterpies having no PP and hope that they can take out Agatha's ghosts by themselves.
Realistically I don't think Kevin will actually finish this series, since there'll have to be so much grinding, but if he does, I think x-items will be his only chance, so he needs to save up as much money as possible.

Caterpie retains tackle when it Evolves. So you should definitely evolve them and complete the game with only Metapods.

Metapods only keep moves if you level them after denying them evolution. Otherwise they scrub the moves and only get harden.

@@avak2101 well to my knowledge other "only this Pokemon" challenges exclude moments where you need hm users, but you can't use them in battle. So using that clause would be the way to do it
@@kevingarnett7366 In gen I opposing pokemon have unlimited PP so they will never struggle. Opposing pokemon only started to have PP in Gen II and above
Also, struggle is a normal type attack in gen I and cannot hit ghost pokemon. In successive generations it became typeless so it stopped being super useless against rock and steel and could hit ghosts even without foresight.

Playing with Metapods wouldn't be impossible, if they run out of all 40 pp of Harden then they would have to use Struggle, which is an attacking move. Only problem is that struggle hurts you as well, and there's 40 pp of Harden. What I'm saying is please do this anyways.

This is commonly referred to as the "clones challenge", only you would normally have a number generator pick for you. I find it funny that even a guide says:
"It’s an interesting challenge, as the game becomes much easier or harder depending on the Pokémon you roll. If you roll a 445, for instance, you get to have a team of Garchomps to use (watch out for Ice-types, though), but roll a 10 and you have the monumental task of beating the game with nothing but a team of Caterpies."

If you find Pokéballs in the wild and don't want to catch any more Pokémon, you can sell them at shops to get more money for items, which will come in handy with the Caterpie team. Speaking of the team, what are your plans for when they start evolving? Caterpie evolves at level 7, so if you want to prevent that you can either find an Everstone (though I think they don't exist in FR/LG, since it's Gen 1) or mash B whenever a Caterpie starts evolving. Loving your gameplay so far!

Also, if you are *reeeeeally* dedicated to this, and want to actually complete this challenge with only caterpie, you want to get caterpie with specific natures. The best nature for your challenge is adamant. It boosts physical attack and reduces special attack. A caterpie only ever has a physical attack. You will also need to train against specific pokemon to boost your attack and speed stat. Killing Mankey and Nidoran♂ boost attack stat, while Weedle and Rattata boost the speed stat.
It will be permanently pathetic, but that will be the least pathetic form.
If you want to evolve, then your Modest caterpie is the best one of the bunch, because it has boosted special attack. You will want sleep powder, dream eater, silver wind, and double team.
Why do you know this. Why is there a strat for cateprie. Why are people so masochistic...

By the way when a Pokémon evolves it can't automatically lose some moves. So metapod only challenge as long as you started with caterpie won't just have harden.

Kevin evolve the caterpies and then you have a metapod that knows the move tackle. A half an hour set up and you could try.

I love that your trying out different games like this, the worst challenge I've ever seen is trying to beat any Pokemon game with Magikarp, and not letting Magikarp evolve, cause Gyrarados is pretty powerful.
I swear this was how my first playthrough of Pokemon Yellow was, when I was trying to beat Brock with just Pikachu and Electric moves don't affect rock types, lol, all I had was the normal moves, I had to grind so damn much.
It is possible with Metapods, since when they run out of PP on harden, they will struggle instead, which does damage

This is a really fun challenge, but... man you've really made this ridiculously hard on yourself. No evolving, so you can never access any of the decent moves. Chose bulbasaur, so Gary has charmander. The only type of advantage you can even get is a disadvantage. lol
Also... Lance of the Elite Four is going to destroy you, if you can somehow figure out a way to even get that far. You're gonna have to get some HM slaves eventually. lol
