I kind of love her acting choice to not be on beat the whole time, as if she's considering her next words and singing this for the first time as the character. Wow.
her being a beat behind the accompaniment is a such an artistic choice. its like a reflection of her falling behind life, a life thats moved far beyond where she is

If you think about it, Shoshana could never return to NYC for very long for a very valid reason. It represented so many deeply emotional memories. The love of her life died on the streets of this city. This song is performed almost like a memory to that time in her life. I cried like 3 times
@@romalovesmac You assume I didn't know about him.. Adrian Matthew was pretty amazing at the cast karaoke, but his style was still more akin to Jessie Meuller's version than this or Jeremy Jordan's.
I’ve been doing the rounds of various amazing performances of this song. Jordin Sparks makes me cry fastest, Alison Luff is so beautifully angry, Katherine McPhee is gorgeously introspective, but this. Shoshana seems to have captured so much. There’s the deep, bitter regret, the self-reflection, the frustration & more fear about the future than anyone else I’ve heard. Wow.
She’s really masterful in translating emotions through her vocals. When she sang “finally reminds her” with a slight rasp from being a wisp away from crying is just amazing.
why isn't someone writing a musical behind Shoshana? She could absolutely be with the legends of broadway- Patti, Barbra, Bernadette, Audra, Chita....it needs to happen.
I find it fascinating that even though I've heard this song like a million times since it came out (I'm honestly surprised I'm not sick of it by now :P) and interpreted in so many different ways, every single performer brings something totally different. And Shoshana's version is definitely up there in my favorites!
I was thinking while watching this (and not at all getting sick of hearing new interpretations!) how amazing the writing from Sara Bareilles is and how it must be so wonderful for her to see each new person take this and run with it. How thrilled she must be that it's touching so many different people. At least I hope she feels that way.

I’ve listened to a TON on renditions of this song and everyone manages to put their stamp on it but in similar ways. THIS rendition stands completely on its own. So much emotion not a note out of place, power and restraint at the same time. Shoshana u are the QUEEN! By far my favorite
I've been lucky enough to see Waitress 6 times over the years (Jesse 2x, Betsy 2x, Sarah 1x and Katherine 1x) and this is the first time an actress had me me tear up during this song since the very first time I saw it with Jesse Mueller. Shoshana is just something else we dont deserve her
On the flip side Sarah Bareilles doing the parody version about Angela Merckel on SNL still made me cry ... lol. But this is still a truly, supremely evocative performance.
you lucky man!.. I wanted to see it in NY with Sara and Jason Mraz but couldnt find anybody who would fly over with me!... It's in London and we are going to see it later this month. Excited is not the word! :-)
That last “mine” was such a perfect choice vocally, it just really showed how much pain the character was in... it was like a wail, which makes total sense because it’s just pure emotion and pain by the end and Shoshana is a master of acting through a song. Simply amazing.
She builds the song masterfully... that's a kinda genius. And the voice is a marvel of color and control...the riffs are used judiciously and to great effect. And then there's the deep loneliness of a woman who feels hollow and desensitized and just wants to be herself again. It's a heartbreaking performance.

She’s raw and she’s angry and so, so sad and it’s amazing how easily she portrays it, without the scenery, without the context of the rest of the musical, without the clothes, just herself, a mic and the piano. It’s different from the other Jenna’s and it’s amazingly heartbreaking. I love, love, love this so much.
That's how it should be imo! Sure vocal tecnique is fundamental in musical theatre, but it should be used to feel more free with the acting choices and actually enhance them, not just to show off
We must remember Shoshana Bean IS 100% the reason why WICKED producers believed that the show was bigger than Idina Menzel. The fact that she sing this from the bottom of her heart, does anyone know her story. She sing like she’s been In the same position as the character. 😭💕
I’ve seen so many renditions of this song on TH-cam and this is by far the best vocal/acting performance. The ability to convey the message of that powerful song with nothing more than a stool, microphone, and piano is beyond me.
I can't tell you how many times I come back to listen to this. No other singer compares. She just grabs you by the soul and takes you to a place where all the feelings are finally safe to be felt. No matter what else is happening around you, it melts away into the background. You cannot help to be anything other than ultimately present and vulnerable. Bravo!
This is level of performance only comes from years of experience--not only as a professional singer but from personal experience as well. Masterclass on how to sing this song… the best version I’ve heard, emotive, gritty, technically flawless, tells a believable story bringing the performance to another level.…. absolute perfection!
So much color. She has the perfect quality of voice to perform this song, it's so passionate. Some of the expression is dramatic, but there's a whole lot that isn't, and i think that's even more important to have when performing songs like this. So amazing, I'm in tears.
This is an example of Musical Theatre Singing at its absolute best. She is so close to breaking the ENTIRE song, but her need to communicate this always balances her emotional passion. She rides a razor’s edge of technique and emotion. Very VERY few people can sing and act like this at the same time.
Hands down my favourite rendition of this song so far. Stunning vocals and INCREDIBLE acting. Such nuance and subtlety. I adore it. Sho really is one of the best at what she does. Just amazing.
This version always makes me cry. It's so relatable feeling the grief over the person you feel you were supposed to be but didn't get to be due to your own misgivings. Love Shoshanna
The second verse really solidified this performance for me. Sho brings such incredible anger and grief to the song that pairs so powerfully with its words, such sadness into grasping at what she’s lost. It’s fantastic, and her face acting in that verse is stunning.
I never got this song before hearing her sing it. Made me cry for my old, hurt, but beautiful self. I'm inspired to find that beauty, again, and never again let her go.💞

It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
I still remember that girl
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love
And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

@@sideeffects78 I was being kind, I was worried you weren't being kind, I saw the "she ruined this song for anyone" and then I saw the rest was nice
sideeffects78 same thing for ‘Make it Rain’!
Her maturity surely helped her a lot in conveying the emotions of this song..
I'm crying and still rewatching this for the 100th time
Literally bought tickets to see this show immediately after watching this. Anything with this woman and I am THERE.
Officially my favorite version
So much color. She has the perfect quality of voice to perform this song, it's so passionate. Some of the expression is dramatic, but there's a whole lot that isn't, and i think that's even more important to have when performing songs like this. So amazing, I'm in tears.
This is an example of Musical Theatre Singing at its absolute best. She is so close to breaking the ENTIRE song, but her need to communicate this always balances her emotional passion. She rides a razor’s edge of technique and emotion. Very VERY few people can sing and act like this at the same time.
Just back for my daily viewing of this
Hands down my favourite rendition of this song so far.
Love Shoshanna
she ATE this
I’ve listened to this song so many times, and now all of the sudden I’m balling my eyes out watching her tell this story.
Saw it last month in nyc and I started crying this song gave me chills
Most perfect musicality I've seen with the dark confession theme of this song. Like the connection feeling of going to an AA meeting. Thank you!
The second verse really solidified this performance for me. Sho brings such incredible anger and grief to the song that pairs so powerfully with its words, such sadness into grasping at what she’s lost. It’s fantastic, and her face acting in that verse is stunning.
The acting behind this performance is just as incredible as the singing. So expressive!
I never got this song before hearing her sing it. Made me cry for my old, hurt, but beautiful self. I'm inspired to find that beauty, again, and never again let her go.💞
I saw her the other day on Broadway and when she finished this song then she got a super long applause and it was so cute
