    In an era where spin rates are only getting higher, it seems fitting that one of the more effective pitches is one that is purposely meant to spin less. The outcome is obvious: the knuckleball shall return.

    I feel like Felix Bautistas splitter is insane. It may not have the same movement as other splitters but with his arm slot and matched up with his 4seam is just different than any other splitter

  • @robertgordon7983
    @robertgordon7983 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One thing that I think get overlooked so much is the Visual spin from the hitters prospective. I throw a 4 seam fastball with 2100-2200rpm that typically get 18-20 inches of Ivb that grades out as pretty good pitch in isolation and a change up that spins about 1500 with 3-8 drop in the opposite direction that grades out pretty mediocre. But my change up is by far my biggest swing and miss pitch because I hold it with a 4 seam grip which makes it visually indistinguishable from a fastball and batters swing right over it

    Splitters with less than 1000rpm and with a large mph differential are most likely forkballs. Aroldis Chapman throws one, George Kirby throws one, there are several that still throw true forks, they're just usually called splitters.

    • @SadMarinersFan
      @SadMarinersFan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      probably will get its own distinction like how Sweeper got separated from sliders last year.

    • @somerandomguy5977
      @somerandomguy5977 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nah, it's closer to knuckle curve vs. curveball than anything else and sweeper isn't even a real pitch. Usually it's a slider, sometimes a curveball, either or those pitches weren't registered as "sweepers" until last year. Plus the concept is stupid. Sliders have slide implying sideways movement. If they wanted to differentiate sliders they could've added gyroball which is already used in japan for gyrospin sliders or maybe a name for sliders that go down. Sliders already slide, implying sideways movement so saying "sweeper" implying sweeping action is dumb especially since not all pitches called the same thing move the same so some sliders are more frisby, some more vertical but to use "sweeper" as a whole "new" pitch. It's ridiculous. Slurve is already a pitch name for a slider with more vertical drop anyways and it's registered by statcast but like forkball it's only listed as "slurve" if you tell them it's a slurve. Pitches have to do with pitch grips not movement anyways, plus sweeper just doesn't sound good.

    A ball moving through the air creates lift. Normally, whichever way the ball is spinning on some axis is the direction the lift force is being "redistributed" to...for a fastball, it's spinning backward, which sends the lift force to the front of the ball and creates "rise." A slider spins in the direction of the pitcher's hand, so the force moves that way and the ball moves glove side. Curve is opposite the fastball. The splitter is thrown with the intent of spinning very little, so the lift force isn't redistributed...it presses up against the back of the ball, creating nosedive. But because it isn't thrown with the arm motion of a curve, it can be thrown harder, like a fastball. The knuckleball does the same thing but has the added bonus of having so little spin that the stitches can serve as rudders, moving the ball left and right.

  • @lapotencia25
    @lapotencia25 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Kodai Senga's ghost forkball essentially operates like a slightly slower splitter with even more downward break which makes the pitch so effective. He's out now but when he comes back I'd like to see a video on the ghost fork and forkballs in general

    Given that the splitter by Gilbert only spun 4.5 times, are we going to be in a spot where we see 80+mph knuckleballs at some point? The splitter grip seems to be something that can lead to it.

    If you were shown a pitch mix with velos movements arm slots and placements, how accurately would you be able to guess how good of a pitcher they were? Because I feel like when I see stuff like glasnow or strider, I wonder why their outcomes seem so bad relative to the perceived quality of their pitches.
