Before becoming professional John Paul Jones had access to a cathederal pipe organ, which gave him hand / foot skills on the keyboard / padals. Often hard to tell that the bass guitar isn't playing as he covers it all so well live (Since I've Been Loving You, Kashmir, Trampled Under Foot etc) Of course Jonesy also skilled on many other instruments as well as bass / Keyboard

Funny thing is, Jimmy went to see Robert play a gig to decide if he wanted him as a singer. Naturally he nabbed Robert right away & said "Right. Now all we need is a drummer." (He had already nabbed JPJ). And Robert says "Yeah. I know a guy."

I was going to say the same thing. And the version on the old LP is WAY better, way tighter than this version. More cohesive. Not sure where you could find that EXACT version, other than an LP.

I have to agree. I feel as if I was so lucky to have seen it all grow from way back then. Nothing has ever had that same magic. It was another time and a different way of thinking so nothing ever will.
Led Zeppelin really is unique. All four members are the absolute best at what they do. I fall in love again every time I listen to them. Jimmy and Robert are so visually exquisite and JPJ and Bonzo are the absolute backbone. 💕🎼 🔥
Yea you should probably just watch this whole concert. Whole Lotta Love is great. Dazed and confused is long but almost a life changing experience. You mentioned bass and keyboard. You are correct. Led Zeppelin is with no doubt the greatest rock n roll band that there has ever been ! Their live performances are the main reason for this statement ! Every performance different as with every song. You never get a repeat . They are so tight as a band, cos they are so loose and free within each song. No other band has this controlled freedom . The band and all 4 members play by feel, they just work off each other, which decides on where they go with a song every single time, its like a new song every time . Truly amazing !

The beauty of Led Zepellin improvising live on a fantastic C minor blues. Never exactly the same on any given night, this is them at their absolute best. John Paul Jones is doubling electric piano with the bass line played with his feet on bass pedals. The whole thing locked together by Bonzo, probably the finest 'rock' drummer of all time, leaving Jimmy Page to weave his guitar around Robert's vocals, masterfully letting loose in the instrumental breaks.
yes a session drummer i knew got a copy of unreleased material from a sound enginer at a certain studio it was brilliant all the songs you knew but changed a lot by the improvisations they used in the session

There are quite a few songs from this concert. Dazed and Confused is a 30 min track that literally has Jimmy page become a wizard on stage. Also from this concert is Whole Lotta love, another epic performance that is a must see.
I've been waiting for you to get to this one. This is my favorite Zeppelin performance. The chemistry between Plant and Page is insane! The whole band, really, but especially those two on this song.
You say you are not musically savvy, but you clearly get it. Led Zeppelin are the greatest band of all time. Basically everything you have said in this reaction is absolutely spot on and I am jealous of you in that I wish I could feel again what it was like to discover this band. As for contemporary bands, there is one that I know of that come close, or as close as a band possibly could, to Led Zeppelin. A band called Rival Sons. I’m not really a great fan of their albums after their third but I go see them every time they are in the country as live, they are astonishingly good. I was fortunate enough to see Led Zeppelin live in ‘77. There’s a meme floating around saying in essence that in the ‘70s we paid $5 to see the greatest bands in history, and in the 2000’s people pay $100 to listen to a DJ play songs on a computer. The Zeppelin show as well worth the price of admission. 😜
Yeah, I saw them at Madison Square Gardens in 73. I loved that all the concerts back then were general admission with an open floor where you could work your way up to the front where you felt the music as much as heard it and you could dance and/or puff on whatever. Go to a concert today and everybody has an assigned seat and you sit on your ass for the show with the person in front of you holding their cell phone in front of your view of the stage, while everybody knows that the concert is going to be released on YT with sound taken directly from the board anyway. Concerts today are not only expensive, but the main great thing of the concert experience is completely absent.
I saw them in 1977 also. I was a sophomore in HS. It was the one in Oakland, CA, final band of a Day on the Green, which included the original Journey (pre-Steve Perry), and Rick Derringer. I forget who the other 3 bands were. Those were the days!!

The studio version is well worth hearing. Robert Plant himself considers it his best performance. It's sublime. Also, Led Zeppelin were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band.

Nice reaction ! Just discovered your channel. They were absolutely amazing to the core. They were the biggest and most successful bands of the 1970s. All were masters of their instrument. Robert Plant used his voice like it was a third or fourth instrument. You did hear a keyboard piano played by John Paul Jones all throughout the song. The bass you heard was played was being played by his feet. It's synthesized bass, but it sounds like a real bass. It's a metal box about 28 inches across and 4 to 5 inches high - with pedals coming out of the 28 inch side of the metal box. He pushes the pedal down for each note while playing keyboard with his fingers at the same time. The reference to "back door man" is an old blues phrase. It's about a guy who is having an affair with either a married woman or a lady who has a boyfriend. When the guy hears the crunching of the driveway stones or the slamming of a car door or the keys at the front door lock or the front door handle being grabbed - he runs out the back door - to avoid exposing the affair. Jimmy Page is a master guitarist to the core. John Bonham on drums is by far the best rock and roll drummer who ever graced a stage. He is lights out, plays to the song and in many cases drives their songs with his loud, thunderous prowess ! They were sex on fire and there satisfy your desire. I saw Led Zeppelin around 1977 at Madison Square Garden where these songs were recorded a couple of years earlier from these live performances. It warms my heart to see you, as a younger person, genuinely touched and appreciating the music I grew up on as a younger person.

John Paul Jones is the bass and also the piano/keyboards player. He is playing here, like in others live songs, with a keyboard like an organ. He played the piano sounds with the hands and the bass sound with the feet. He have another set of "keyboard" at his feet. He is largely responsible for the amazing live sound that you hear and in which it seems that there are more than 4 musicians on stage. :) I like what you do and I liked and subscribed from the moment I realized that you listen to music in a way that many do not, even if you say you have no musical knowledge. You have a native ear that feels very well certain things in the compositions, and that's the only way you can discover how brilliant Led Zeppelin are.

Happy New Year, Stacey! First of all, that's a fantastic reation. You describe yourself as someone who is not knowledgeable about music, but you articulate very clearly how the music moves you and how you feel when you hear it. You've been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin's live performances on stream, and that's great. I would also recommend going back (on your own or on stream) and listening to the album versions. Led Zeppelin was definitely a "jam band," and their live performances featured a lot of improvisation (which comes from Blues and Jazz) and extended variations on the theme of the song as it was recorded in studio. Every member of the band was a musical genius on their instrument (or instruments), but for my money the secret sauce of the band is John Paul Jones (playing keyboards on this song and on the live Stairway to Heaven you watched). He primarily plays bass and keyboards (switching as needed) but he also plays a number of different instruments like the mandolin. He doesn't have the charisma and showmanship of Page, Plant, or Bonham, but without him adding just the perfect notes and tones and inflection with his instruments to mesh with Jimmy's guitar and John's drums the music wouldn't sound as sweet or be as incredible. Jimmy Page really does have a real "love affair" with the guitar as you mentioned--a number of first-time reactors who see Led Zeppelin's live performances comment on how he seems to understand the language of the guitar. Every great guitarist has his or her own unique style, and Page seems to feel and experience the notes with his entire body, not just his fingers. And kind of like you talked about your own expressions during the reaction, that emotion gets reflected on Jimmy's face as he plays. He loses himself in the music as much as the audience does. Robert Plant is definitely unique, and every charismatic male rock singer who claims Plant wasn't an influence wishes that he was as cool as Robert Plant. He has a charisma on stage that is infectious. As you point out it's playful, whimsical, and sexually charged all at the same time. In a stadium of 50,000 people he is the alpha cool cat, and he knows that he holds everyone else in the palm of his hands. It never comes across as arrogant or seeming like he's trying to show off--that cool and that swagger just oozes out of every pore and the man can't help it.
One of my most wonderful memories is walking around Athens in the early 80’s listening to Zeppelin 3 on my walkman. “Out on the Tiles” also a great song on that album.

First of all great reaction and great description of Led Zeppelin. There are so many great Led Zeppelin songs and performances to explore. So far you reacted to 2 great live performances at MSG 1973 (one of their greatest concerts), one fabulous performance at Knebworth 1979, and 1 video. I would suggest reacting to studio versions of either Since I've Been loving You (it's different but will create the same emotions ), or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Another option would be a live performance from one of their early concerts at The Royal Albert Hall 1970 reacting to the songs I Can't Quit You Babe or Bring it on Home (Robert plays harmonica in this one). Lastly President Obama honored them at the Kennedy Center in 2012, and I would recommend reacting to heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven which was part of this ceremony.

Re: Jimmy making solos look easy...I see it this way: Jimmy's HANDS make it look easy. I am a huge fan of Rock, Jazz, and Jazz-Fusion music. I've seen many of the best musicians on earth and I've seen a ton of guitar heroes that play in a very technically precise way. That is not Jimmy's style, though. He is intuitive, he is visceral, he is somehow spiritual in his playing. He goes beyond mere technique, mere Blues scales and "correct" notation when he solos. And it is in his face that you can see the struggle to transcend as a musician...so much passion, so much focus, so open to the Muse, and the power of the Universe. You know? His solos, especially the longer ones, are an improvisational passion-play for him, and it is a beautiful thing. But you can see, in his face, that it is not easy. Truly, there is only ONE Jimmy Page.
I've been looking forward to your reaction to this song. As you said, It's a masterpiece, and even though you say you don't know anything about music, your analysis is spot on because you pay close attention to the music and you feel it. Concerning a favorite Zeppelin song. I've found it's usually the last one I listen to. On "Since I've been lovin' you" John Paul Jones plays keyboards and the bass guitar! Incredible musicians! You can hear each instrument both individually and collectively! Without a doubt the best band ever, second to none!
As a Brit, its so lovely that youve found our music ( Floyd Zeppelin Genesis etc.) its easy to think weve just gone to pieces in the UK , but we still have our music . And dont forget , this is just one example of Zeppelin being influenced by American Blues . Its what got me into that genre !

I was there! Graduated 1971. Was a huge, short-haired jock my 4 years of high school. We jocks met are mortal opposites, (the stoners) around 72. Became acquaintances, they got tickets to this concert. Now, them stoners had some Orange Barrel Acid. I took mine, walked into a fully lit arena, shuffled along with crowd. Was so buzzed I forgot why I was here and why was I walking this way. Then bam, metal barricades threaten any further movement. Why? What? Dang it, I think I walked the wrong way, considered turning to go the opposite way. But why? Where are my friends? I started to turn to walk the other way. Fortunately a beautiful girl with flowers in her hair grabbed my arm, handed me a joint and assured me that I needn’t go the other way. Way higher now, colors, sounds, visuals heightened but why? Then Bamm!! The lights went out and Robert Plant was ten feet in front of me singing, ‘been a long time since I rock and rolled’ I will spare you the rest of the story but holy shit I love those Stoners. 1973, MSG Longer version of this story was sent to Rolling Stone, NYT, LA Times. They never replied. Writing career over before started.
This is probably my favorite Led Zep song. Still remember a summer night when I was like 17 and we were chilling on a hill at a camp fire getting wasted. My friend listening to this song completely going to another dimension and suddenly getting a seizure. Slapped his face to get him back and he's like dude leave me alone, I'm seeing an amazing green light and he has his best time. That song really gave him a seizure 😂 Crazy night

There are many reactions to one song in this TH-cam video, (Hearts version of Stairway to Heaven), but I think the whole show gives a much deeper insight into Led Zeppelin & is very entertaining. All 4 members of Zeppelin were magnificent at their craft. Plant on vocals, and Jimmy Page on guitar…they’re a master class in Blues Rock, Rock, and early metal. Bonham was a magnificent drummer, JPJ on keyboards. A collision of brilliance that spawned one of the greatest rock bands to ever exist!

Imagine me in 1973 or 4 , hearing this song in a time where Zep were the only band who did this form of bluesy rock . Such an incredible shock . Bought LZ 1, 2 & 3 and my life changed. From Elvis to Stones and then Zep. In a time were you got the chance to get familiar with new things , but still discovered new music about every year . Though I'm old now ,I am grateful to have lived through the best time in history .
Authentic. You put it perfectly. the music is authentic and raw and emotional and not ruined by AI or autotune. This is done by musicians with super talent and creativity and artistry. The passion in Robert Plant's singing and the emotion of Jimmy's playing (not to forget the powerful backing of JPJ and Bonzo) is what makes this song outstanding and one of the best by Zeppelin
All their songs are great . Also they are a very versatile band . None of their performances of any song were ever the same , they improvised a lot , but they were always completely in tune with each other 😊

What makes Led Zeppelin better then every other band, every single one of their songs is great, & their love of different genres. They definitely aren’t a one trick pony, you can tell they each live & breathed their craft. Their concerts lasted for 3 to 4 hours, they were more creative with their songs on stage. They aren’t just one of the best individual or as a group, each are the GOAT, & together they are GODS!

Funny thing is, Jimmy went to see Robert play a gig to decide if he wanted him as a singer. Naturally he nabbed Robert right away & said "Right. Now all we need is a drummer." (He had already nabbed JPJ). And Robert says "Yeah. I know a guy."

Yea you should probably just watch this whole concert. Whole Lotta Love is great. Dazed and confused is long but almost a life changing experience. You mentioned bass and keyboard. You are correct. John Paul Jones is playing keyboard with his hands and the bass with foot pedals. He was probably the most all around talented musician in the group. Great reaction

The beauty of Led Zepellin improvising live on a fantastic C minor blues. Never exactly the same on any given night, this is them at their absolute best. John Paul Jones is doubling electric piano with the bass line played with his feet on bass pedals. The whole thing locked together by Bonzo, probably the finest 'rock' drummer of all time, leaving Jimmy Page to weave his guitar around Robert's vocals, masterfully letting loose in the instrumental breaks.
yes a session drummer i knew got a copy of unreleased material from a sound enginer at a certain studio

There are quite a few songs from this concert. Dazed and Confused is a 30 min track that literally has Jimmy page become a wizard on stage. Also from this concert is Whole Lotta love, another epic performance that is a must see.
I've been waiting for you to get to this one. This is my favorite Zeppelin performance. The chemistry between Plant and Page is insane! The whole band, really, but especially those two on this song.
You say you are not musically savvy, but you clearly get it. Led Zeppelin are the greatest band of all time. Basically everything you have said in this reaction is absolutely spot on and I am jealous of you in that I wish I could feel again what it was like to discover this band.
As for contemporary bands, there is one that I know of that come close, or as close as a band possibly could, to Led Zeppelin. A band called Rival Sons. I’m not really a great fan of their albums after their third but I go see them every time they are in the country as live, they are astonishingly good. If you do happen to read this comment and are interested in checking them out then I would recommend the video ‘Pressure and Time’

Rival Sons are one of the best modern bands IMO. We need a lot more of that sort of new innovation rooted in good old blues based classic rock.

I was fortunate enough to see Led Zeppelin live in ‘77. There’s a meme floating around saying in essence that in the ‘70s we paid $5 to see the greatest bands in history, and in the 2000’s people pay $100 to listen to a DJ play songs on a computer. The Zeppelin show as well worth the price of admission. 😜
Yeah, I saw them at Madison Square Gardens in 73. I loved that all the concerts back then were general admission with an open floor where you could work your way up to the front where you felt the music as much as heard it and you could dance and/or puff on whatever. Go to a concert today and everybody has an assigned seat and you sit on your ass for the show with the person in front of you holding their cell phone in front of your view of the stage, while everybody knows that the concert is going to be released on YT with sound taken directly from the board anyway. Concerts today are not only expensive, but the main great thing of the concert experience is completely absent.
I saw them in 1977 also. I was a sophomore in HS. It was the one in Oakland, CA, final band of a Day on the Green, which included the original Journey (pre-Steve Perry), and Rick Derringer. I forget who the other 3 bands were. Those were the days!!
As much as I enjoy this performance...I like the studio version best. Why? Because it's Page's best solo. And it's awesome.

Nice reaction ! Just discovered your channel. They were absolutely amazing to the core. They were the biggest and most successful bands of the 1970s. All were masters of their instrument. Robert Plant used his voice like it was a third or fourth instrument.
You did hear a keyboard piano played by John Paul Jones all throughout the song. The bass you heard was played was being played by his feet. It's synthesized bass, but it sounds like a real bass. It's a metal box about 28 inches across and 4 to 5 inches high - with pedals coming out of the 28 inch side of the metal box. He pushes the pedal down for each note while playing keyboard with his fingers at the same time.
The reference to "back door man" is an old blues phrase. It's about a guy who is having an affair with either a married woman or a lady who has a boyfriend. When the guy hears the crunching of the driveway stones or the slamming of a car door or the keys at the front door lock or the front door handle being grabbed - he runs out the back door - to avoid exposing the affair.
Jimmy Page is a master guitarist to the core. John Bonham on drums is by far the best rock and roll drummer who ever graced a stage. He is lights out, plays to the song and in many cases drives their songs with his loud, thunderous prowess !

I saw Led Zeppelin around 1977 at Madison Square Garden where these songs were recorded a couple of years earlier from these live performances. It warms my heart to see you, as a younger person, genuinely touched and appreciating the music I grew up on as a younger person.
This is my fav! I always watch reactions to this song. It reminds me of how I felt the first time I heard it. LZ music has a way of demanding attention. They will forever be my favorite rock band of all time. There is no other like them.

John Paul Jones is the bass and also the piano/keyboards player. He is playing here, like in others live songs, with a keyboard like an organ. He played the piano sounds with the hands and the bass sound with the feet. He have another set of "keyboard" at his feet.
He is largely responsible for the amazing live sound that you hear and in which it seems that there are more than 4 musicians on stage. :)
I like what you do and I liked and subscribed from the moment I realized that you listen to music in a way that many do not, even if you say you have no musical knowledge. Happy New Year, Stacey! First of all, that's a fantastic reation. You describe yourself as someone who is not knowledgeable about music, but you articulate very clearly how the music moves you and how you feel when you hear it. You've been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin's live performances on stream, and that's great. I would also recommend going back (on your own or on stream) and listening to the album versions. Led Zeppelin was definitely a "jam band," and their live performances featured a lot of improvisation (which comes from Blues and Jazz) and extended variations on the theme of the song as it was recorded in studio.
Every member of the band was a musical genius on their instrument (or instruments), but for my money the secret sauce of the band is John Paul Jones (playing keyboards on this song and on the live Stairway to Heaven you watched). He primarily plays bass and keyboards (switching as needed) but he also plays a number of different instruments like the mandolin. He doesn't have the charisma and showmanship of Page, Plant, or Bonham, but without him adding just the perfect notes and tones and inflection with his instruments to mesh with Jimmy's guitar and John's drums the music wouldn't sound as sweet or be as incredible.
Jimmy Page really does have a real "love affair" with the guitar as you mentioned--a number of first-time reactors who see Led Zeppelin's live performances comment on how he seems to understand the language of the guitar. Every great guitarist has his or her own unique style, and Page seems to feel and experience the notes with his entire body, not just his fingers. And kind of like you talked about your own expressions during the reaction, that emotion gets reflected on Jimmy's face as he plays. He loses himself in the music as much as the audience does.
Robert Plant is definitely unique, and every charismatic male rock singer who claims Plant wasn't an influence wishes that he was as cool as Robert Plant. He has a charisma on stage that is infectious. As you point out it's playful, whimsical, and sexually charged all at the same time. In a stadium of 50,000 people he is the alpha cool cat, and he knows that he holds everyone else in the palm of his hands. It never comes across as arrogant or seeming like he's trying to show off--that cool and that swagger just oozes out of every pore and the man can't help it.
Totally agree with all of that, and definitely listening to more of the studio tracks that we all grew up with and that are works of art for sure.
One of my most wonderful memories is walking around Athens in the early 80’s listening to Zeppelin 3 on my walkman. “Out on the Tiles” also a great song on that album.

First of all great reaction and great description of Led Zeppelin. There are so many great Led Zeppelin songs and performances to explore. So far you reacted to 2 great live performances at MSG 1973 (one of their greatest concerts), one fabulous performance at Knebworth 1979, and 1 video. I would suggest reacting to studio versions of either Since I've Been loving You (it's different but will create the same emotions ), or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Another option would be a live performance from one of their early concerts at The Royal Albert Hall 1970 reacting to the songs I Can't Quit You Babe or Bring it on Home (Robert plays harmonica in this one). Lastly President Obama honored them at the Kennedy Center in 2012, and I would recommend reacting to heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven which was part of this ceremony.

Re: Jimmy making solos look easy...I see it this way: Jimmy's HANDS make it look easy. I am a huge fan of Rock, Jazz, and Jazz-Fusion music. I've seen many of the best musicians on earth and I've seen a ton of guitar heroes that play in a very technically precise way. That is not Jimmy's style, though. He is intuitive, he is visceral, he is somehow spiritual in his playing. He goes beyond mere technique, mere Blues scales and "correct" notation when he solos. And it is in his face that you can see the struggle to transcend as a musician...so much passion, so much focus, so open to the Muse, and the power of the Universe. You know? His solos, especially the longer ones, are an improvisational passion-play for him, and it is a beautiful thing. But you can see, in his face, that it is not easy. Truly, there is only ONE Jimmy Page.

As a Brit, its so lovely that youve found our music ( Floyd Zeppelin Genesis etc.) its easy to think weve just gone to pieces in the UK , but we still have our music . And dont forget , this is just one example of Zeppelin being influenced by American Blues . Its what got me into that genre !

I was there! Graduated 1971. Was a huge, short-haired jock my 4 years of high school. We jocks met are mortal opposites, (the stoners) around 72. Became acquaintances, they got tickets to this concert. Now, them stoners had some Orange Barrel Acid. I took mine, walked into a fully lit arena, shuffled along with crowd. Was so buzzed I forgot why I was here and why was I walking this way. Then bam, metal barricades threaten any further movement. Why? What? Dang it, I think I walked the wrong way, considered turning to go the opposite way. But why? Where are my friends? I started to turn to walk the other way. Fortunately a beautiful girl with flowers in her hair grabbed my arm, handed me a joint and assured me that I needn’t go the other way. Way higher now, colors, sounds, visuals heightened but why?
Then Bamm!! The lights went out and Robert Plant was ten feet in front of me singing, ‘been a long time since I rock and rolled’

This is probably my favorite Led Zep song. Still remember a summer night when I was like 17 and we were chilling on a hill at a camp fire getting wasted. My friend listening to this song completely going to another dimension and suddenly getting a seizure. Slapped his face to get him back and he's like dude leave me alone, I'm seeing an amazing green light and he has his best time.

Great reaction Stacey! Check out "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin. "Ramble On" is probably my favorite Zeppelin song. John Bonham on Drums and John Paul Jones on Bass are superb and the stars of this song.

I love your reaction to the Zeppelin songs you've reacted to so far, your perceptions are spot on! I want to recommend another performance that's actually a tribute to Led Zeppelin, with the remaining band members in attendance. It's called "Led Zeppelin - Kennedy Center Honors (complete)" from 2012. There are many reactions to one song in this TH-cam video, (Hearts version of Stairway to Heaven), but I think the whole show gives a much deeper insight into Led Zeppelin & is very entertaining. It's a long video, (22 min.), but well worth it! Thanks & keep 'em coming!

All 4 members of Zeppelin were magnificent at their craft. Plant on vocals, and Jimmy Page on guitar…they’re a master class in Blues Rock, Rock, and early metal. Bonham was a magnificent drummer, JPJ on keyboards.

I was privileged to be at this show July 29, 1973!... So you’ve listened to some of their milestones at different points in their career. The bluesy soul of Zeppelin ❤... I'm about to lose my worried mind...
Imagine me in 1973 or 4 , hearing this song in a time where Zep were the only band who did this form of bluesy rock . Such an incredible shock . Bought LZ 1, 2 & 3 and my life changed. From Elvis to Stones and then Zep. In a time were you got the chance to get familiar with new things , but still discovered new music about every year . Though I'm old now ,I am grateful to have lived through the best time in history .

All their songs are great . Also they are a very versatile band . None of their performances of any song were ever the same , they improvised a lot , but they were always completely in tune with each other 😊

I can't recommend enough watching the video ...Porcupine Tree Trains - ( from Arriving Somewhere Live in Chicago )... Even a mid song guitar string break adds to the performance .
What makes Led Zeppelin better then every other band, every single one of their songs is great, & their love of different genres. They definitely aren’t a one trick pony, you can tell they each live & breathed their craft. Their concerts lasted for 3 to 4 hours, they were more creative with their songs on stage. They aren’t just one of the best individual or as a group, each are the GOAT, & together they are GODS!
