How to finesse fish the Senko and catch more bass than ever before!

  • With a little 1/10 of an once jig head, a 4" senko and 10# line on a spinning reel, I can catch a jillion bass! Not all are big but every once in a while a big one bites! I'm fishing a Hydrilla laden canal in central Florida but this technique will work from Connecticut to California! I'm basically a power fisherman but I grew up with light spinning tackle and I'm a good fineness fisherman so let me tell you how to do it!

Roland, your line watching tip resulted in my PB! I was fishing a weedless skirted bass jig with a 4" worm and thought I had bumped into an underwater twig, but thanks to you I was watching the line and it twitched sideways, so I set the hook and reeled in a 6.9 lb bass! Thanks Roland!

Tried Roland's suggestion, use a frog first and after a bass explodes on it but doesn't get hooked, quickly throw in a Senko worm and bam, I caught a nice 16" bass this morning on the Senko!! Thanks again to the man!!! :) and yes, I use Spro Frogs!!

Good to see even Roland loses fish on his hook sometimes. Happened to me the other day/ Used a plastic worm Texas rigged and had a 3-4 lb bass on the hook (or so I thought I thought he was hooked) and as I was reeling him in he got off my hook. Heartbreaking!! :( He seemed like he was on the hook well but then jumped out of the water and wiggled himself off the worm. LOL I hate that when that happens!! The fish in Florida are very smart and know the ways to get off a hook.

Yup.. Love it, it's a fish catching machine.. and avoid Gary Yamamoto Senkos--they tear too easily, too much salt. They work--but at $5-$8 per pack of 10 or 5, depending on the size, that's too much money. 2-3 fish per worm is not a good ratio.

Why not use 20 lb braid for finesse fishing (no leader)? To prevent spool packing when pulling a snag, I wrap it 7 times around a wooden file handle (no file attached) and can straighten a finesse jig's wire hook and salvage the rig, or if hopelessly snagged break off at the knot and retie. Strong enough to horse a bass out of moderate cover without a heart-breaking lunker breaking the line. I have lost too many nice bass on 8 and 10 lb mono to count. 20 lb braid is as thin as 6 lb mono and more abrasion resistant. In tea-stained bass wares, dark green braid disappears or looks like filamentous algae. Works great on both baitcasters and spinning reels with less coil memory and less line twist. 30 lb braid works well for moderate/heavy fishing. Once I standardized on 20 and 30 lb braid for all of my bass fishing I now save money by buying economy-sized PowerPro 1500 yard spools.
