Hand therapist here and ultra cyclist. No surgery for a few days is likely due to the edema level and threat of compartment syndrome. Your hand function will take time. Should return with hard work. Your forearm motion and elbow seem simple but will be tricky. Make sure your therapist is a CHT, Certified Hand Therapist or one with many years experience. You have a complicated injury so be careful and be consistent in your work. Do Not Rush the elbow! I look forward to updates. Best to you friend!
Firstly, I wish you a quick and complete recovery. I can really relate - I messed up my elbow pretty badly in August too. Although mine wasn’t broken, it was in rough shape: full of dirt, torn open, infected. I ended up in the hospital, and they tried to fix it without anesthesia at first, but couldn't locate all the nerves in my shoulder. So after an hour of waiting in the OR, with everyone ready to start, they had to go with full anesthesia anyway. Despite no fractures, they splinted my arm for 10 days because it was in such bad shape. I couldn’t touch my face for weeks and had to work hard with my physio-big thanks to him! Eventually, I regained about 98% mobility. It was tough, especially with the initial stiffness due to missing tissue when they stitched it all up. And after almost every physio session, I’d get blisters on the scar tissue from the lymph fluid buildup. I’m confident you’ll make it through and recover most, if not all, of your mobility. You’re such an inspiration to so many cyclists out there. Your videos gave me strength and belief when I got dropped on group rides due to fitness and weight. You’re a fighter, and I know you’ll bounce back strong. You’re setting an example for all of us-showing us how to come back after setbacks.
Awful crash, glad you are home. Had an almost exact broken elbow/busted ribs in a multi-day off-road race, but solo and no cell or SOS. I nearly passed out from blood loss before I finally met a guy who drove me the final hour to a town. I lost nerves in one finger, but it moves and I can still ride, so grateful for that. It takes time but you will make it work somehow. We are fragile and strong. Wishing you all the best recovery!
I have been following your injury on Instagram. Getting injured is not fun. It ends up being a time to realize what we take for granted. I am getting handy to 60 and the thing for me is to not dwell on it. I have broken bones, had many sprains, torn this and that. You can literally get messed up just walking on a sidewalk. This past summer, my wife broke her ankle getting out of a chair on a beach and stepped on her shoe. She is a dancer (pro in the day, and instructs now), so that was a rough couple of months for her physically and mentally. All the best to you Juliet, you will come out on top. Cheers.
I was squirming in my seat listening to that. You absolute worrier getting through that without pain management!! I know you probably have your moments of feeling really down about it, but just the fact that you can still smile and contemplate what you CAN still do, shows real resilience. Wishing you a straightforward recovery and hope you can get back to things being more functional soon. X
ugh, what a nightmare! my anxiety is high just imagining what that was like. wishing you a full recovery and full mobility! i broke my elbow last year and still have some nerve sensitivity but my mobility is back at least.
I am really very sorry that you had to experience this. I work in emergency care and cannot believe that you were not given analgesia straight away. The first response of any medical team in this situation should be to give you sufficient pain relief, to allow the limb to be immobilised for transfer to definitive care. No excuses!!
I can't believe you went so long without painkillers, that's insane. When I did my tib + fib in the middle of nowhere I had gas and air from the first medic, morphine from the second team then ketamine (not as fun as it sounds) from the dr who flew in to set my leg before i was put in a Land Rover. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I'm no expert in anything like this but if there's anybody who is in virtually ideal condition to totally rebound from this it's you! Don't let your mind get too far ahead of your physical recovery and before you know it this will be a distant memory. Love and prayers Juliete! - Bob (Toronto Canada)
Sometimes accidents which are least expected, turn out worse. I know as I get older, the risk taking diminishes. Glad to see your back home and recovering. Take care of yourself.
I’ve had a VERY bad crash on mountain bike 15 years ago. Badly beaten too. The recovery has been a long journey at that time but I have all my functionalities back since 10 years now. It’s frustrating to loose something you take for granted (health and fitness) but so rewarding to fight back every step up. Hope the best for you and keep fighting! 🎉
I also damaged the nerves to my hands after a bad bike crash and an operation. My experience was that the feeling gradually came back so hopefully you'll have the same experience. It was a slow process so be patient and celebrate the small victories on the way (the first time I called hold a fork was a big moment for me)
Wow! What a story! What a nightmare! I also broke my right elbow on a Mtb crash a few years ago (it stayed inside my skin though). I couldn't stretch my arm past 45-90 degrees. Once the fracture was healed I started stretching exercises and it went back to normal. They didn't want to operate because they were worried about damaging the ulnar nerve that passed very close to where my break was. Hopefully once all the swelling goes down and the pressing on the nerves stops, the pins and needles and numbness will go away. Physio should help with all the scar tissue and mobilisation. Wishing you the best of recoveries !
As bad as all of your ordeal was, it's not nearly as bad as I had imagined happened. I was thinking damaged arms, legs, face, head, torso etc. Glad you're well on your way to a full recovery and hopefully no long term effects. God has given our bodies a wonderful ability to heal itself.
I really admire your attitude; it's so good to see you smiling now that you're on the mend. That first week in the hospital must've been awful. I hope you have a speedy recovery and suffer no lasting damage, or as little as possible.
I’ve taken that helicopter ride after being hit by a pickup truck resulting in an open fracture of my lower leg. I understand your concern about recovery. I was off the bike for 17 months. I’m back on now. The point Juliet is that this will pass. You will recover and ride your bike again. You will probably have some residual effect from this. Elbow fractures can be complicated. The advantage of being an athlete is that we are consistent with our training and with rehab when necessary. You will adapt and overcome! Cyclists have a passion for the ride. There’s not a lot that keeps us off the bike!
Wishing you a good and quick recovery! After this terrible experience, you still haven't lost your style and smile. Take it easy and everything will sort out. You don't have to rush things, you are a great athlete and true fighter.
So many points of interest/coincidences for me! a) My mother-in-law has an MSc based on studying pain (worrying, particularly near Halloween!), specifically of the hand and has all sorts of exercises for fingers and hands in general b) Said M-i-L is a Physiotherapist and chose to live next to a graveyard, coincidentally (apparently, but I felt worried). She has a dark sense of humour. c) Stopping for lunch in Val D'Isere at the bottom of many slopes one glorious winter's day many decades ago, helicopters started coming in with stretchers carrying people. They laid the stretchers with body bags out, fully zipped up, in front of the restaurant we were sitting in (20m away), blood pooling below the stretchers they were on... big, dark patches ... there were 6 or 8 from memory in the hour we sat there, and the helicopters were still busy on the slopes.... There was no hurry for the ambulances to collect the bodies ... Be glad you only had a broken arm and not a broken femur etc Doom & gloom, huh? I went ski-ing many times afterwards and there was nothing more thrilling and fun (with Jeremy Clarkson's proviso of "with your trousers on"). Get well, ensure everything works as well as it can, go cycling and HAVE FUN!
Wow that’s a bummer , I had to recover from major back surgery some years ago and only advice I can give is be super disciplined and relentless with lots of small steps.Don’t rush early on and Don’t expect a linear process but just keep at it and you will come back strong. Also learn as much as you can about the damaged area and how to strengthen and compensate , even talking to others in parallel sports to see what they did. Finally I take extra precautions (I now have really expensive impact under shorts for my back/ hips just in case so may be you might need the best elbow protection money can buy to avoid a repeat anyway good luck hope you make a speedy recovery.
Good to see you are so chirpy and on the road to recovery! I broke my Ulna and Radius 2 years ago after falling off my mountain bike, now have 2 plates permanently in place
Glad you’re on the mend Juliet! Thanks for sharing and reliving your crash story. I know that wasn’t easy. Sending you good vibes and speedy recovery! Your videos bring me such joy and inspiration! Cheers!
All the best, Juliet. I hope you get a full recovery. I am frequenting the hand therapist at present due to a less serious fracture, so I have some idea of the patient journey. Take it one step at a time, but your positivity is a real asset.
Whew!!! So glad you weren't anymore injured than you were. I've had so many injuries from cycling over the years. But never broke anything with bones catching sun or blood squirting out, yikes!!! What an experience, such a nightmare where minutes last for hours and hours seem never ending. But as I watched this on TH-cam I was so happy to see your smiling friendly eyed face tell your story of this horrific adventure. I must say, when I'm at the local grocer I just might never look at pomegranates the same way again. 🙄 Warmest thoughts and deepest wishes for a fast, smooth and total recovery. -Vinny B from the San Fernando Valley, California, USA.
Jings Juliet that sounds awful. Here's hoping a speedy & good recovery. Try & not dwell on it, it happened, you learn, you move on. Think about all the fantastic things you do that go well! Sorry you had to endure that alone, that must have been hard. Take care
Good to see you recovering, its early days for the elbow and nerves, so hopefully lots of improvement to come there. I am still recovering from a motorcycle crash 3 months ago, ok on a road bike now but somewhat scared of falling off the mountain bike.
Thank you Juliet for taking the time and letting us know that you are ok and healing. I was one that was not happy with knowing you were hurt and then left hanging. So, I am grateful to know you are on the mend and thank you for helping ease our worries. =]
Huge hugs to you Juliet from Canada 😀 I have had my share of injuries and this is some of what I learned - be patient, healing takes time, and the body has an amazing power to heal itself. Your stiff elbow needs some good physiotherapy and gradually your bending it will come back. For your finger nerve damage try gently swishing a bird feather up and down your forearm / hand / and fingers to gradually stimulate your nerves back to life. Good luck !!
So sorry to hear about your accident and I really feel it since I just had my own accident but nothing like yours, just a fractured thumb, but yours was horrific. I wish you a full recovery and keep up your uplifting videos. You are amazing! :)
Best to you, Juliet. I had a major left hand injury, and I'm a guitarist (since age 8). Eventually I got back to the guitar. I made a few adjustments to get there, but now I really don't think about it much. I wish you well, and I love your channel.
So sorry to hear about the crash! I've not yet watched the video all the way through, but wanted to say hope you heal quickly, and also hope the bike survived :)
So sorry to hear this. Watching your videos was an inspiration to me after 3 spine fusions to start riding again. Hang tough you will make it through this.
What a flippin' nightmare, Juliet. I am glad to see that you are home and that you are on the road to recovery. I know it must be terribly frustrating with limited mobility. Sending you loads of positive energy. Stay strong!
WOW!! What an ordeal 😢 I know the feeling of being in hospital in a foreign country as I experienced it in Tunisia for 5 days many years ago, although it was a completely different set of circumstances in my case. As difficult as it may be, follow the advice of the doctors and try not to push yourself too hard, too quickly. Your body will repair itself in its own time. You just need to be patient, and hopefully, there won't be any long-term implications. Wishing you a speedy recovery and more adventures in the future x
Seeing you eager to get back on your trainer and thinking about how you are going to continue riding is absolutely inspiring. your ability to recover and carry on is amazing. Best wishes, I'll be watching bto see what you do next.
Awww Juliet, what an ordeal. You are one tough adventurer! I have confidence that you will regain more feeling and use of your hand over time and with PT. It’s taken me a year after each of my hip replacements to regain feeling and range of motion and strength in my quads. In addition to PT I found acupuncture quite helpful too. I also have experienced the shudders from pain post hip surgery and empathize with your experience. Looking forward to seeing your progress! You Got This!
Holy hell Juliet! Wishing you a speedy recovery and continued positivity. Have faith in the body's remarkable ability to heal given time, patience (and lots of physio)
Cheer up, you will get well very soon. I also had a crash riding my bike five months ago (in July 2024), I dislocated and broke my shoulder. I am still in the recovery phase after shoulder surgery but I am on the way of recovering the range of motion 4 months from the surgery. The recovery is slow, but eventually I will get there, so you will. But the way, I also questioned and thought how that happened to me, but things happen for a reason, lucky as you well said.
This accurate account will probably help stop a few accidents as us viewers are a bit more careful! Check out infra red light if not already, special lights that aid healing. Also take plenty of probiotics - all kinds, nat yoghurt, in pills, natto etc. As those antibiotics will take a toll on your microbiome. Essential for good health. And does Spain not do pain killers lol ? How hard are they to take paracetamol and wait that long lol. Or how hard do you look, "she won't need 'em" ;) I'm gonna be a bit more careful for a while. Best wishes, Andy.
Your story had quite a few similarities my bike crash a few years ago, also resulting in an exposed fracture on my left elbow. When I was on the same stage as you are, the worst was yet to come - a full year of very intense and painful physio sessions to recover back the arm movement. Check with your doctors, but the less time you spend without moving your arm, the better. Waiting a full month to see the doctor again seems like a really long time, unless you're starting some physio earlier. Anyway, I wish you well and I know you're going to recover much faster than I did. Good luck! ❤
Whoa, that was very painful to listen to. I wish you all the best and a recovery that brings you in the best possible state back onto your bikes. Thank you!
Glad your sense of humor is still intact, focus on recovery before riding mountain or gravel bikes for a while Juliet. We're all happy you made it home and are in good enough spirits for this video, and BTW your teeth are intact and face still glowing, rest up! Praying for a speedy recovery.
Super glad you're ok... I'm glad your resilient and a tough lady! Get well soon! Don't worry about the mascara or the eyeliner... You're beautiful as you are!
It's a terrible thing to see you injured and hear about what you are going through but it's nice to see you smiling and taking it in stride. I really am hoping for you that the recovery progresses towards full movement in due time and they can figure out how to coax your fingers to proper function. Take care and be sure to chime in with an update.. stay positive, you will get well :- ) it will take some time.
It's good to see you talking to the camera and smiling even while you're so clearly worried about how much recovery you'll make. Good to see you on the turbo on Strava - hoping you do make a full recovery. Keep us posted - all the best!
Wishing you a full recovery! My friend had a nasty bike crash with a car and broke both wrists. At a similar point in recovery to you her mobility was much reduced, now she has full range of movement back with proper physio. I'd recommend finding a private specialist physio, NHS ones I believe are more focused on gaining basic mobility back for general life rather than full range for sports or hobbies.
Good luck for a speedy recovery!❤ That sounds really traumatic. I had a terrible crash which affected me badly mentally - I found talking to a therapist about it helped a lot (like you say making the YT video is probably really helpful for that!) I broke my arm and like you couldn’t tie up my hair so I feel your pain! I found I could at least get it out of my face with one of those big hair grips/clips that are kind of shaped like a banana. Also like you I also had bad nerve pain and I found microwaveable heat packs worked really well, just to provide a different sensation when it’s really nagging (and it’ll probably get a lot better as the swelling around the nerve goes down, but I’m not a doctor). 😊
Best to you friend!

ugh, what a nightmare! my anxiety is high just imagining what that was like. wishing you a full recovery and full mobility!
i broke my elbow last year and still have some nerve sensitivity but my
mobility is back at least.
It was a shock, while watching your last video. It is good to see you back home & in recovery at home.
I am really very sorry that you had to experience this. I work in emergency care and cannot believe that you were not given analgesia straight away. The first response of any medical team in this situation should be to give you sufficient pain relief, to allow the limb to be immobilised for transfer to definitive care. No excuses!!

This is so sad! I hope PT helps and I pray that you get mobility back in your elbow and hand. I’m glad you’re home and safe!
I'm no expert in anything like this but if there's anybody who is in virtually ideal condition to totally rebound from this it's you! Don't let your mind get too far ahead of your physical recovery and before you know it this will be a distant memory. Love and prayers Juliete! - Bob (Toronto Canada)
Unfortunate accident, glad you are recovering. Good luck with rest of recovery.
Sometimes accidents which are least expected, turn out worse. I know as I get older, the risk taking diminishes. Glad to see your back home and recovering. Take care of yourself.
We all wish you the best recovery get well soon

Thanks for the full update. Hope sharing the story was helpful for you. Best wishes on your recovery. Don't stress on content. We'll be here.
Hope you can get back at it !! Good luck in your recovery!! Accidents suck !! We are all rooting for you ❤️ sending love from Canada 🇨🇦
Sorry to hear all of this, but thanks for sharing it all - was not boring at all. Rest up and good luck with recovery.

God has nothing to do with this. If he did, I don’t think he’d give our bodies the ability to heal and also give children cancer.
I really admire your attitude; it's so good to see you smiling now that you're on the mend. That first week in the hospital must've been awful. I hope you have a speedy recovery and suffer no lasting damage, or as little as possible.

I went ski-ing many times afterwards and there was nothing more thrilling and fun (with Jeremy Clarkson's proviso of "with your trousers on"). Get well, ensure everything works as well as it can, go cycling and HAVE FUN!
Get well soon, always look on bright side. You are so positive. Fingers crossed for quick recovery and see you out there on the bike. 🤗 🤗

sad to hear that your holiday ended this way!! I wish you speedy and complete recovery Juliet!
I’m so glad you are fairly okay, and you’re on the road to recovery. Praying you have full use of your hand quickly.
You have quite a tale to tell! And you tell it well. Trust the process and grind through the rehab! Wishing you a complete recovery!
I’m sorry to hear that lady that’s terrible. I hope you’re recovery is quick and it doesn’t put a fear of biking into you.
that really sounds terrible. I so sorry this happened to you. I really hope you have a speedy and full recovery. Take care.
Good to see you are so chirpy and on the road to recovery!
I broke my Ulna and Radius 2 years ago after falling off my mountain bike, now have 2 plates permanently in place
Man....all those little impacts you don't think about, positive vibes for a speedy and full-as-possible recovery!!
Glad you are back home . Glad you are walking and talking . By the new year you will
Be in much better shape . I cant wait to see your recovery ❤️🩹
Wish you a full recovery, stay strong!
Hang in there.. that’s terrifying and very frustrating on the stuff still hanging on. Hopefully PT and time will get you back to 100%
As horrible as it must have been you managed to come out smiling and joyful…amazing! I loved this video!
Glad you’re on the mend Juliet! Thanks for sharing and reliving your crash story. I know that wasn’t easy. Sending you good vibes and speedy recovery! Your videos bring me such joy and inspiration! Cheers!
Aww ouch hun not good big hugs speedy recovery hopefully be back to riding soon ❤
Sorry to hear about your accident, wishing you all the best for full recovery of movement in your arm. Hang in there gal!

You poor thing you certainly have been through it, but I’m sure with your positive energy and outlook you will be back to good in no time. 💪🙏
Poor Juliet - what an ordeal - shows you’re made of tough stuff!
All the best for your recovery and stay positive 🤘
Jings Juliet that sounds awful. Here's hoping a speedy & good recovery. Try & not dwell on it, it happened, you learn, you move on. Think about all the fantastic things you do that go well! Sorry you had to endure that alone, that must have been hard. Take care
Good to see you recovering, its early days for the elbow and nerves, so hopefully lots of improvement to come there. I am still recovering from a motorcycle crash 3 months ago, ok on a road bike now but somewhat scared of falling off the mountain bike.
Sorry to hear about your misadventure in La Palma, Julie, but glad to hear you’re back home - wishing you a speedy and FULL recovery!
Thank you Juliet for taking the time and letting us know that you are ok and healing. I was one that was not happy with knowing you were hurt and then left hanging. So, I am grateful to know you are on the mend and thank you for helping ease our worries. =]
Don't push yourself too hard on the turbo. Let your body heal up! I will be keeping you in my prayers.
So sorry that you had to go through such a horrendous experience and wish you a full and speedy recovery.

So sorry to hear this. Watching your videos was an inspiration to me after 3 spine fusions to start riding again. Hang tough you will make it through this.
Sounds horrific…..glad you are back home and on the road to recovery 🤞
Julie I love your videos. You are an Inspiration to a lot of people and I wish you a speedy recovery from your subscriber here in AUS
What a flippin' nightmare, Juliet. I am glad to see that you are home and that you are on the road to recovery.
I know it must be terribly frustrating with limited mobility. Sending you loads of positive energy.
Stay strong!
Juliet, wishing you a speedy recovery. Good thing you are tough😉
WOW!! What an ordeal 😢
I know the feeling of being in hospital in a foreign country as I experienced it in Tunisia for 5 days many years ago, although it was a completely different set of circumstances in my case.
As difficult as it may be, follow the advice of the doctors and try not to push yourself too hard, too quickly. Your body will repair itself in its own time. You just need to be patient, and hopefully, there won't be any long-term implications.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and more adventures in the future x
Juliet, really sorry to hear this. Very best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Wow, glad you're doing good now. Stay positive and you are in no way shape or form boring
Bloody hell ! Wishing you a good recovery
Best wishes for a full recovery, I sympathise, been there, done that, got the t-shirt!
pfff: so crazy! Stay strong, keeping my fingers crossed for you and your elbow & nerve recovery.
I’m glad you are reasonably ok - I love watching your videos and I hope you recovery goes well and that you are back on your bike before you know it 😁
Your story had quite a few similarities my bike crash a few years ago, also resulting in an exposed fracture on my left elbow.
Thank you!
I hope you feel better soon and get back to as much 100% percent as possible. I hope your arm and hand recover fully. best of wishes.
Darling Juliet! What an ordeal. So glad you’re as good as you are. Thanks for sharing this. Wishing you every blessing of a full recovery.
HiJuliet, wish you a speedy recovery! Stay positive !!!!!!
Good luck with the continuing recovery. Glad you’re in one piece e and on the road back
It's a terrible thing to see you injured and hear about what you are going through but it's nice to see you smiling and taking it in stride. I really am hoping for you that the recovery progresses towards full movement in due time and they can figure out how to coax your fingers to proper function. Take care and be sure to chime in with an update.. stay positive, you will get well :- ) it will take some time.
Thanks for the update and letting us know what happened , but so glad to see you back home and in great spirits 👍
Best wishes !!! I hope you have a great recovery and all the movement limitations vanish with the physiotherapy work. Patience and determination !!!!
What a story! So glad you are looking much, much better. Patience is that word, you'll be hearing a lot... Take care 💐
It's good to see you talking to the camera and smiling even while you're so clearly worried about how much recovery you'll make. Good to see you on the turbo on Strava - hoping you do make a full recovery. Keep us posted - all the best!
What an ordeal. Glad to hear you're back at home, hopefully things can get close to normal soon. Wishing you a full recovery.
