Ragnar Trail Tetons 2019

- I won a contest to participate in a Ragnar Trail Relay in the Tetons. While I had run a Ragnar Road Relay before, this was my first trail relay. And it was the first time I was going to run at elevation. And I rarely train for hills. So while I have been averaging about 70 miles per week going into the event, I knew I would be completely out of my element. The event was grueling, requiring three different trails in a roughly 30 hour period (one of which was at night), and I also had to do it while camping with a team of people who had never met who were also being filmed by a film crew the entire time. (however, all footage in this video was shot by me)
It made for a truly unique and bizarre experience. And I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I'm not exactly sure what the timeline is, if any, on what the film crew captured and will be putting together, but I will update this description when I have links or other information to share.
Disclosures: Ragnar paid for my race entry fee and for the glamp site. Ragnar also paid for the lift ticket for my ride up to the top of the mountain, as well as for room and board after the event for one night. However, I had to pay for travel and meals before and during the event.
Ragnar Trail Tetons sponsors also provided some bonus swag for the participants for our team:
KT Tape provided various tape products and a heating/cooling device.
Nathan provided an insulated water bottle, a t shirt, a hat, and a handheld flashlight. However, the running vest that I wore (vaporkrar 4L) is a vest that I personally purchased and have been using for years.
Merrell was the shoe sponsor and provided to orange shoes I wore on the red loop
Additional disclosures:
The Nike Wildhorse 5 that I ran for my yellow loop were provided to me for free
The GPS watch that I wore is a Suunto 5 that I has been provided to me for the purpose of review and long term testing
Finally, as a side note, the event is called Ragnar Trail Tetons, and the area seems to be referred to as the Tetons, but we did not summit any of the actual Teton peaks, as far as I know

thank you for your lovely comment. one of the things they asked me as they interviewed me for this contest was why i run. and i never really answered the question but instead would answer the question of why i train. i train because, sometimes, you find yourself at the feet of something beautiful. and you will want to run miles and miles and miles. and it would be a shame if you couldn't experience something beautiful, just because you were out of shape.

I ran Zions several years ago and Stopped running. I signed up for the one in Oregon. I hope to get back in shape. Ragnar was fun and challenging. Glad I finished it!

This looks amazing, I hope to do one someday! We usually have 2 local to Boston, one down to the Cape and one in New Hampshire. Those views from the top of the peaks are amazing. Must be such an enlightening experience being all the way up there.

Wow looks amazing - great film work as alwaysHave been thinking of giving one of these types of courses a shot one of these day - would really love to do hood to coast at some point. Have only done one here in NJ called River to Sea which was great but no longer exists. The Tetons look amazing though. I think I would have been right there with you whooping it up on that view around 9 minutes and later in the vid, its great to hear things like that for me that you just love what you are seeing and experiencing, and for that I am just pumped to watch more from you

They sell 360 cameras by saying you don't have to move them to get the shot. But the best shots involve movement.

Ragnar are organising their first trail relay in the UK soon and just waiting them to announce the location and date so I can see if it fits in my race calendar for next year. I did my first team relay at Endure 24 Leeds this year and loved it!

Great video and footage! Thank you. As a hot, humid, flat running Houstonian, what was the impact on your paces/effort with altitude, elevation gain and low(?) humidity? I'm vacationing in Bend, OR (only 4k-5k altitude) soon and curious what to anticipate.
my resting heart rate was anywhere between 30-60% higher than normal.
8 or 9 minute mile pace was a challenge on the easy loop with the least climbing.
i aimed for 12 or 13 minute miles on the intermediate loop during inclines (although i focused mainly on my power number from my footpod)
for the tallest climb (2,000 feet to a height of 10,000'), i think we were usually around 15-18 minutes per mile. we did a lot of hiking.

UPD: Due to the fact that you ran one run at night - I decided to try it too and today at 2:00 I ran out of the house and started running! I ran 8 km at 5:10 pace. It was very unusual and interesting for me, really good experience!

Nice video and experience in the Ragnar trail event!! The 2nd one looked really technical... Quick observation... you were the only Asian guy there...lol.. (probably the only non-Caucasian).
I wasn't the only one, and there were some other minorities there. I want to say that it's not a racially diverse crowd, but that would likely be an over simplification by assuming that all white people are the same
@@kofuzi It varies by event, i suppose. Chicago Marathon, of course, is a melting pot!! In contrast, I ran Grandma's in 2015 in Duluth, MN, and there were very few minorities...
