- 🛑RESCUE SHIP IN 22 METER WAVE🛑 • 🛑 #storm at Sea The L...
The Full Storm at Sea Experience without actually being there.
Filmed from the bridge of an ERRV, 100 Nautical Miles NE of Shetland. Watch how the storm gradually increases until waves reach 21 meters (65 feet)
#StormGladys,
I sailed around the world as a deck officer until chief mate in the merchant navy for many years. North Sea, North Atlantic, these are very rough, as in this video This was my regular 'day at the office'. I had to stop for medical reasons 30 years ago. I've been working in an office as a finance director since then. Every day, I wish I could be back on the sea. Every single day. When you have lived it, you don't want anything else. And, believe me, it pays much less than a job at the office. Thank you, guys, for posting this. And bringing back so many memories.
To prawda - zawsze ciągnie na morze !!!!
@@justinconrad5185 bruh re read his comment before attacking him
I spent four years in the US Coast Guard....without saying more, I do agree with what you assert.
I want to cross the Atlantic and the bay of biscay
Same here. Almost (navy, surgeon; how much I got knocked about below depended on who drove the ship upstairs)...But the sentiment fully shared
Once you've seen this in real life , this can be addictive to watch . The pure magnitude and strength of the ocean makes you realize how small and mortal you really are .
Exactly!
But I don't think, that a lot of folks in this thread have. 😄 This ship is a darling, taking all, that Mother Nature dishes out at her. Id feel safe ANY day onboard this vessel. 😎👍⚓🌊
@@jasonheberling7508 what in the hell are you blabbering on about? Getting wasted and talking in caps on TH-cam is really a way of showing people what an idiot you truly are
John you are 100% correct my friend.
The oil rigs in hurricanes really get me that footage can look other worldly. Ocean during a storm is crazy.
Like the waves I filmed a couple of months ago. Only 22 meters but hypnotic to watch. It was a privilege to be there

I watched from beginning to end. Fascinating. And it gives me done insight into what my late father dealt with. He was a radio officer in the merchant navy in the 1950s, sailing across the world, and while he may not have seen storms as bad as this, he certainly will have seen his share of rough seas.
Thanks for doing this - and for doing long videos, not just 30 seconds TikToks.
Thanks for watching our videos. I’d imagine that your father saw more than his fair share of storms at sea.
My father was a radio officer in the navy. His ears were trained to focus on one sound. If he was watching television he couldn't hear us talking to him. It was funny sometimes...I would say things to him I'd never say if I thought he could hear me. 😝
@@miapdx503 My wife was in the RAF and must of had the same training. If she is watching TV, conversation is pointless 🤣🤣
A salute to the designers and builders of this vessel!

Back in the day when I was a young sailor, my first duty station was on a ship that was going to Hawaii. Our ship got very close to a very bad hurricane. The result was that this ship was taking 45degree rolls. While just standing there, the deck would come to you. It was scary and exciting at the same time. When we reached Hawaii, with the ship moored to the pier, we went on liberty and the solid ground felt like it was still moving. Thanks for helping me relive some fond memories of being out at sea........wishing you all fair winds and following seas.
will meneses Glad we could bring some of that back to you 😊

How about this one. The largest waves on the planet at the time of filming 🌊🏄♀️
th-cam.com/video/1qxaWXBqgME/w-d-xo.html
An incredible piece of equipment. Quiet as a mouse. I was on a brand new LNG supertanker in the 80s. In 65 ft seas on the bridge, the whole ship would shake and vibrate and creak and flex. It was intense. Thanks for the memories.
Question: Do you sometimes feel like you're rocking with that ship when you watch videos like these?
I’ve worked on a ship like that. Every time a wave hit the stern it would send shockwaves through the hull and cause a rippling effect.
I thought I’d hit something the first time it happened 😂
I filmed this a few months ago.

The water looks like a giant alive thing or creature during storms, cant find the best word to express the feeling. My head started to feel a bit dizzy after watching it for some minutes. The ocean seems to be the best "TV" ever) Cant even imagine how incredibly cool it must be to experience such view in real) Inspite of the external danger coming from the water, it has very calming and tranquilizing effect. The water takes away all the thoughts and make you just adore it. Relly beutiful to watch. I dont think its ever possible to get bored by watching it.
Quite agree.

Not many for sure. Out of the people that did their first trip at sea in the Southern Ocean in seas that are like this on average, only about one in four could cope and go on to work at sea for years, but also had to weed out the ones that could not do the work or caused trouble with the crew etc. It's the tiredness that gets them more than sea sickness does. We call it being broken. They do not know how to get that second wind over and over week after week.
Agree..

I have never been in this position but to tell you the truth there is distinct possibility that I would be scared to death. Kudos to these men of steel.....and salt.
I can’t swim very well but I remember I was 13 at the time of the British ferry leaving Zeeburge, Belgium 🇧🇪 ⛴ to Dover and sinking in 1987 with the loss of 188 souls drowned due to poorly carried out safety procedures of staff. The bow door was normally left open for a period of time letting in a small amount of water while leaving the port, unfortunately the crew member on duty was sleeping in their bunk, later this was found out not to be a unusual practice. 😴 The sea 🌊 filled into the lower cargo level moving the vehicles 🚗 around the ferry then it capsized. The crew member should have been awake and shutting the bow doors. I haven’t been on a ferry since. Scared the life out of me.
I think anyone working at sea 🌊 are very brave as the sea can be very unpredictable and looks to be a harder way of earning a living with adrenaline rush . Beautiful but deadly. God Bless all at sea.
I’m afraid that this is the best I can do.

I’m at 3:42 and the view from the camera, is truly superb!! due to the way that you shot the video, it’s as if the person that is viewing it, it’s right there on the bridge and back right around the area of the camera. Perfectly priceless!! So many days in my life I remember that view and then I would turn and look out over, towards the stern. But to get a really outstanding view of the waves from the stern on a ship, one must go back, to the stern. That is one of the reasons that I truly loved absolutely loved working on deep sea-going Tugs. I did that for right about 7 years in my 30 plus years of going to sea. The Tugs, all 5 was a sister build, identical to the 1st one. The Ocean Wave. 155 feet in length, 80 feet in breadth. Fully loaded with fuel fresh water, lube oil, she would draw 24 feet in depth.
I’ve just taken a look at Ocean Wave. She’s quite some vessel.
Getting a view over the stern is not easy on this vessel since we have all those cranes, davits and railings in the way. No one seemed to have filming in mind when the layout was arranged.
My previous vessel was much better and can be seen on my older videos.
@@Bigwavemaster1 I understand. She is an excellent vessel. And there is nothing like being in the North Sea. Except if you ever sail off Cape Horn. The Drake Passage. Named after
Sir Francis Drake is best known for his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577 to 1580. This area is also called, “Tierra del Fuego” and it is the southernmost, smallest, and least populous Argentine province. The territory of the current province had been inhabited by indigenous people for more than 12,000 years, since they migrated south of the mainland. It was first spotted by Ferdinand Magellan.
Never been down that part of the world but very familiar with Sir Francis Drake. We are both from the same part of the world.
Here he is most famous for his part in beating the Spanish Armada.

We would go over a wave and our screws would come out of the water. Waves were coming over the flight deck
90 feet from the flight deck to the water. Some waves went as high as the 011th deck.

I'm reading Goncharov's novel Frigate Pallada right now:
@@sd3named It sounds like the very first trip that I filmed. Unfortunately I was only filming 1 second a day so did not capture the full story.
We had 2 bridge windows smashed which sent water all the way down to the engine room.
After that, every time we hit a big wave and I could hear water running into the deck I would think it was running inside to the engine room.

I envy you. Like someone says in your video: This work is like a free VIP tour! It was joke of course.
I always dreaming of living through storm at ship. But I have no illusions. My vestibular system doesn't give me a chance. So if I ended up on a ship, my acting role was lying down and hating the whole world.)

To be on the sea, and feel its strength and ruthless mystique is dangerously enchanting. There is an allure to its magnificence, and its sheer overwhelming capricious nature. Riding the sea during a storm, is like being a flea on a dragon's back during full flight. It's terrifyingly awesome.
I love it 😊

@@Bigwavemaster1 Wow thank you for pinning it, I just came across your vids today and I love watching them already
Glad you’re enjoying them. You can also follow the crew on Facebook on our “Life at Sea on an ERRV” page. We are at sea at the moment.
Joe Lee Thank you
How often do you encounter a rogue wave? BTW, great video! Many thanks to you and your crew for letting yourselves be filmed.
Rogue waves are fairly common. Don’t be fooled by the Hollywood hype. A rogue wave is simply a wave that comes from a different direction from the rest.
Three sisters often?
Some of those looked a bit roguish....Was watching the whole vid, and 1:09:20 looked a bit of a'different' one {to a landlubbers eyes} as it was 'two in one'... with a crest at the top..but at least it was coming from the same direction...so maybe not a 'rogue' but still a mighty big bar steward.
So no waves like the giant one from the movie Perfect Storm?@@Bigwavemaster1

You know it's a bad one when you go up to the bridge and the Norwegians are standing there with their survival suits ready.
Aquila Rossa Ha! Even when we had smashed bridge windows, nobody panicked like that 😂😂
hypnotic windscreen wipers, that refuse to work in unison.
I would guess there's probably a reason they don't work in unison, like avoiding having all windows covered in sea foam at once. Or maybe the trouble just isn't worth of cost making sure they sync up all the time.
14:49 , 15:11 #feelsgoodman
Shawna Annable yeah syncing them is adding extra unnecessary cost, it doesn’t matter if they’re in sync or not so why bother
its not about economy, its the random action i like, so many things are just so predictable. also, each wiper is separatley powered so that failure of one wiper can not stop all the wipers therefore allowing visibility should one or two wiper motors fail.
Think the wipers made me more sick than the waves lol.
Awesome video. Takes me back to my navy days. Hopefully, someone was able to fix that middle windshield wiper.
Our wipers are crap 😂
Awesome to watch ur channel Graeme..... Fantastic....the best

Mesmerizing footage of forces of nature and professional crew.
I was wondering if you can make any real progress (relative to land) in those weather conditions or is it more of an up/down movement? Bow into waves/wind and enough power to remain in control and then wait for the storm to pass?
calculus77 You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head with the last part of your comment except we aren’t actually trying to get anywhere. We are looking after a couple of oil platforms.
@@Bigwavemaster1 Cool. I'm sure an ERRV is one of the most capable ships in rough weather conditions, regardless of size.
That's not a job for me, for sure. :D My vestibular system wouldn't be able to cope with it, but I have massive respect for you guys. You are the fire and rescue department for those professionals who are already at the mercy of the elements.

Interesting to observe different wave trains that occasionally reinforce to a really big wave.

More to come 🙄
Hello, Wanda !!! I've been waiting for this to come in, and it is well worth the wait. You guys have the best seats in the North Atlantic, and the best equipment I've seen. What a great engineering crew you have with you ;-). Thanks for the video, and maybe slap Wanda's tail fin for me. My wife got on last night after a layover in Iceland, @ 66 N. Stay safe, lads.
She was taken in for a bit of a refurb and paint job after the latest storm.
@@Bigwavemaster1 ~~~
The amount of roll you lads deal with is just stunning. Wanda looks darn good for being on deck 24/7. Great refurb.
1:00:10 look at that wave, it's as high as the ship.
On sailing ships (historically ) they would rig canvas behind the
helmsman so he couldn't look behind him.
Presumably because the sight of mountainous waves would be
so disconcerting he may freeze and stop steering.
vinm300 I would like to think that in the days of close quarter fighting and boarding ships a sailor would not need to be protected from the sight of a following sea?
And, of course, being aware of a following Sea that is about to broach the vessel would be a very handy thing.
@@Bigwavemaster1 , many sailors were very fatalistic. One English mariner, working as a prisoner on a Spanish ship said, "All the Spanish fell to their knees during the storm and only the English worked to save the ship". Obviously there's some exaggeration but one can assume a great many Spaniards stopped working and started to pray.
vinm300 Yes, I’ve heard that story. It’s still not an uncommon attitude amongst the sailors of certain nationalities who have more faith in their god saving them than their own abilities as seamen.
I’ve done a bit of research and found out that open fronted shelters were quite common on American ships. The British were just told not to look behind them 😂
I like the fish pointing the way!
