    Brings back my US Navy days. Smaller ships, which didn't roll so much, almost all motion was pitching. The tallest waves we hit were in the Black Sea. Bent some railings on the 04 level.

    If you are familiar with the Asterix series of books, you will appreciate Albert Uderzo's majestic illustrations depicting a stormy ocean from the perspective of a small fishing vessel blown off course and accidentally crossing the Atlantic. His towering waves in every way reflected those seen in this video. "Asterix and the Great Crossing".

      Yes it's to repel pirates but they will have wire cutters no doubt, why not connect it to the ship electrics. Shocking suggestion..

      Hi, former cargo ship first mate here. Worked the transatlantic lines back in the early 90s until a few years ago. I cant speak for every shipper but for us the barbed wire was added to many ships in the early 2000s. People often think its due to pirates, or sea birds. Its actually to keep the Maritime jahova's witnesses from approaching the boat while they travel from boat to boat.

    • @HighlanderNorth1
      @HighlanderNorth1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm impressed at the footage as well, but I'm offended that it's still being called the "Indian Ocean". Its 2022, and we progressives prefer to call it the "Native American Ocean"!

    Amazing! I would have expected better weather in July. I estimate the tallest of the waves to be 8-10 metres high. Bulk-loaders pose specific risks on rough seas. Short but beautiful depiction of the engine room and the main engine whine. I gather this is a slow-revving diesel with direct drive to the propeller so at 120 rpm you are just about sailing full ahead. Surprised to see that the engine control room was not manned especially in these conditions.

    • @jasonmoyer9492
      @jasonmoyer9492 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that myself. I was a engineer and I was thinking where is everybody at. Maybe he was in the machine shop keeping QMEDS and wipers and oilers busy? But u always want somebody in the control room. Especially during big seas.

    I noticed all of the concertina wire stretched all along the sides of the vessel. I assume this an anti-piracy measure, being in the Indian Ocean. Could you imagine a wave washing over the deck of that ship and catching a seaman unawares? It would wash him/her right into that coiled nightmare of razors! Still, it's a good anti-boarding measure, and I'm sure there aren't that many options available.

  • @DR_SOLO
    @DR_SOLO 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    From the deck standing level where your feet touch the deck how far is it from that to the surface level of the water? Kind of seems like a short distance but it could be deceiving me because of the angle. Obviously the barbed wire would be to deter any unwanted passengers from boarding. That's what gave me the thought of what is the actual distance between the two points maybe it is a short distance
