I bought one of these in nice, very nice shape. It was quite expensive for what it is but in perfect shape, last model year of 2008, called the "Classic" in Sweden. Also the 2.4 NA engine which is a fantastic engine. Not very powerful but reliable, as long as you take good care of these things they last a long time. Mine, which has been serviced and taken care of at Volvo all its life still has a lot left to give, and I'll keep it for a long time. I recommend the V70 2.4 to anyone, especially the manual, which makes it even more reliable - not having to do gearbox services like on the auto.

Thanks Robin for a nice drive and review of the big old Volvo, they're great cars but even they have components that wear out. Thanks for the update on your future plans also. Take care and all the best. Stevie

I bought a V70, 2.0T, 180bhp, 2007, 215k klm(130k mls approx.) here in Ireland for €1,100. Spent €900 though to mechanic, timing-belt, two front discs, bushings, links, service, filters(oil, air, pollen), spark-plugs (it had the wrong spark-plugs in it, from an earlier model I'm told), I think that's it.
I had to give it a big, big clean inside(dogs!!!) & a big, big clean outside, it was left up for a good few months. But it's spotless now.
Everything works except reverse sensors most of the time.
I bought boot mat & tray underneath above spare-wheel, roof-rails & fitted them. I couldn't find rubber floor mats.
I love the sound of it, lovely rumble.
Gave it to my brother & family. He's very happy with it.
I now want an XC70. Maybe even a 2WD, they are more economical & cheaper to tax. Road Tax in Ireland is crazy! The V70, 2.0T costs €710 per year to tax.

I had a Volvo XC70 on a 16 plate, it was the best car I've had, it had a cream leather interior, WOW

Old bangers for the win Robin! Buy it cheap, rag it 'til it falls to bits, scrap it and repeat. You don't have to worry about it getting stolen, or scratched in a supermarket car park. You don't care if the dog gets muddy prints on the back seat. You don't worry about how much its price is depreciating, because it's already as low as it gets. I think my best buy was a Hyundai Accent that I bought at an auction for £275 with a faulty driver's window winding mechanism. I bought a replacement regulator kit off eBay for £20 and fitted it myself, then never spent another penny on it for the next 3 years until the engine finally died a death. I then got £100 back off the scrap man. That works out at £65 a year for a car - that's cheap motoring. :)

If my dog set paw in a car like this one, it would be dragging its ass in a sling for a month :) Repairs won't be cheap (on the car) but overall the car seems to have been cared for, cosmetically at least.

as a mechanic if you want a reliable big car then you cant beat a honda crv 16 or 2.2 diesel... brilliant and ultra reliable....

as a 9 times volvo owner, most under the £1000 budget, they can be addictive, i prefer the v70's over the smaller volvos.

insurance wise, i think they are expensive because they will write off anything they hit.

does your automatic have the winter mode and sports mode switches, winter mode makes you pull away in second, sports mode changes gear a lot earlier when going up through the gears.

Not sure why you say that. Prior to parting with this Volvo I had fitted four new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres, new discs all round, new brake pads, two new front flexi brake hoses, new rear exhaust section, brake fluid change, coolant change, PAS fluid change, air-con re-charge. Sold to WeBuyAnyCar for £750.00. I now have a 2006 Volvo XC70 that’s just had close to £3,000 of work carried out and still to replace windscreen, have a new PAS pump fitting, refurbish and powder coat the alloys and have a 2 stage paint correction done. I’m only keeping the car until summer 22’ when it will be sold to someone who will inherit a very very well looked after car. I have my cars serviced every 6,000 miles or six months regardless so if you do buy from me you sure have a great past history - literally with no expense spared!

I did - SLK 350, since buying it (my second actually) I’ve had a new stainless exhaust fitted and had it remapped by Celtic Tuning along with all new suspension it’s really brought it alive. Lovely little classic rocket. Popped out today in it for the first time in 4 months, washed it and now back in garage. But I’m close to pulling the trigger and buying a Tesla Model S and saying goodbye to engine cars and have them just for the odd weekend outing.
