Thanks Mark. Prince Phillip was such a natural, everyday man. And underrated in his time!!

Prince Philip was a real man of honour.
He was also a master of dispatching fools.
    God rest his soul.

I worked as a Groom for HRH Phillip for 2 seasons when I was young. He was and will always remain my hero. If he was alive and well today there would be none of the nonsense with the two who shall remain nameless.
I also worked for his friend another wonderful character, Sir Anthony Tippett Vice Admiral Chief of Fleet Support .
Both were very bolshy, straight talking, hilarious men.
Then i went into the RAF because im seasick on a pond😂
Interesting fact about HRH...he was really fascinated and did alot of research into UFOs.

I used to work in the City of London, in shipping, and through my work had the great opportunity of visiting Trinity House in London. HM Royal Marines Band came that evening to play part of the 'Beating Retreat' Ceremony. It was quite something and, by reacting to this video today, you've brought all those lovely memories back to me. Thank you Mark.

The odd thing about safety in UK waters is that it's split between Trinity House and Irish Lights. All lights and buoys in Irish waters (and that includes Northern Ireland) are done by Irish Lights. On the other hand, the RNLI have bases all around the Irish coast, probably (along with the Legion) among the last Royal prefixes in Irish Society.

There is Trinity House, then the Northern lights and Irish lights. It's a matter of speculation as to whether they are separate or the same. Ireland still shares services with us. They are separate, but not.

Appears to be a very pragmatic and logical man.

The Corporation of Trinity House, is its shortened name. Its job is to serve the mariner. Glad you got to play it. The Princess Royal, Princess Anne is now the Master. Her brother King Charles is a Member of the Elder Brethren. Phhung on to his role for as long as he could, before handing over to his daughter. The Lighthouse service is one part. There were also light vessels, which had various stations around the British Isles. Pilotage was also another function, ensuring safe passage of shipping through hazards. There is also a charitable aspect, where they will support distressed seafarers. Philip played down his role and did frequent the House. Finally the demise of personnel was in part to the Priminister of the day, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, who felt they were fiscally somewhat extravagant. Just a nice little taste of a Corporation that goes under the radar. I have the privilege of being a Trinity House dependent.

There are Trinity House units & buildings in Scarborough, Hull, King's Lyne, & London etc.
The Scarborough building is in the heart of the old town, & is a neo classical building containing a grand meeting room. The Hull building is similar. There is an old lighthouse on Flamborough Head, built out of chalk & of the 17th century, which must be one of the oldest in the country (except for the ruined Roman remains at Dover). The chalk lighthouse at Flamborough is no longer used, but a more recent lighthouse stands nearby. Mark, the lighthouses themselves remain in use, their lights are still valuable visual aids to navigation around the coasts of Britain, not every boat has GPS etc, especially small pleasure craft, & the lights provide a reassurance for anyone venturing to sea. Notice how Prince Philip had a totally unstuffy way of speaking, down to earth, relaxed & to the point, not at all pretentious as one might expect a Royal personage to be. This is typical of him, & the rest of the Family have followed his example on the whole. They can be very formal & correct when the occasion calls for it, but in more intimate circumstances they are much more natural.

Sadly it is a fact of life now. Lighthouses along with railway signals, are now operated many many miles from there location. Is it a safety issue? I think not, like Prince Philip said, what can they do more in person, to prevent a castrophy than a person hundreds a miles away? Except to watch the horror 1st hand. Interesting vlog Mark, certainly a good discussion topic.

The Lighthouses are a physical navigation marker hence the subtle differences of each even if its just painted stripes red or black which enable visual confirmation of where you are they also broadcast a morse code signal every one a diffent letter to destinguish which one they are & at night the the light flashes in a different patern so as to determine which Lighthouse it is!! So the Lighthouses will always remain because they are a Fixed navigation marker in more than a flashing light & many have meteralogical data collection stations that relay Windspeed & Direction, Visability, Current Weather Conditions,& Barometer Readings all sent back to the Met Office to produce the twice daily Radio Shipping Forcast (Another one Worth looking up) So despite moderniseation Lighthouses are an Intracate part of Marine Navigation & will be around for many years to come??

Hi Mark, have a look at the Flannan Isles lighthouse, at the centre of an unsolved mystery around 1900 when all three Lighthouse keepers disappeared without a trace. There're all sorts of theories about it.

The Fresnel Lens is a bloody interesting thing in itself. From ancient times to today, the lighthouse has been a beacon for so many.

Interesting that Mark - still think lighthouses will always have a place automated or not- like the wheel, no-one has come up with a better alternative have they? ! At times I thought the interviewer was on auto pilot! More life in an urgent note! Thank God for Prince Philip!! ! Snog the mogs and hope our Leo has found a comfier napping spot ! X 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
