  • If you've followed my channel for a while now, you know that I absolutely LOVE photographing Owls and I'm completely OBSESSED with Grouse! So, what do you get when you combine the two? Well, let me show you! Join me on a multi-day photography trip as I find and photograph Short Eared Owls and Sharp-tailed Grouse.
Each spring I try to get out with Grouse as much as possible. Sharp-tailed Grouse are a smaller Grouse that live on the grasslands of the western United States. They're a charismatic bird, the males "dance" to try and attract local females. It's an amazing spectacle, something I always look forward to seeing. This year, one of my top priority species to photograph are Short Eared Owls. Since they inhabit the same areas that Sharp-tailed Grouse do, I thought it fitting to spend some time to attempt to find and photograph them as well. I was rewarded with multiple sightings of various Owls over the couple days I was in the area and am excited to share this adventure with you!
As always, I appreciate your constant support so very much. I hope you're well and wish you an amazing week full of wonderful wildlife encounters.
Come photograph Alaskan Brown Bears with me next summer. This is one of the most enchanting landscapes I've ever visited with some truly amazing wildlife. I hope you join me next summer, please let me know if you have any questions. www.jimmybreitenstein.com/pho...

Lovely photos. Amazing birds both of them. I did not even know that short-eared owl courtship includes such a wing-clap dive. Thanks for taking us along! Looking forward to pt 2

Thanks so much, Ott! It really is neat courtship behavior to watch. I wish I could have picked the audio up on the microphone, but that's something I'll need to continue to work on.

Great video Jimmy and it looks like a real fun trip. Some great video footage and some excellent images of both the Grouse and the Shorties. Shorties are one of my favorite birds to photograph. I had great trip photographing Shorties in December but they are in a completely different type of environment than the ones you are photographing. Ours are hunting and feeding in saltwater marshes along the coast on the Pacific Ocean. They mostly feed on mice, voles, rats and the occasional duck. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and have a great week. Looking forward to part 2.

Thank you so much Keith! I can see why they're one of your favorite species, I'm already itching to get back out with them! That's very interesting, I've always heard you had them up your way, but I never knew what habitats they were found in up there, so thanks so much for sharing. I've also never heard of them taking ducks before. That's quite the feat, given they're not the biggest Owl to begin with. Thanks again my friend, I hope you're doing well!

Great setting to backpack into! And to have both of those species at once is great. I can see why you are obsessed with grouse. I have to say out of all the western species I don't get to see, things like sage grouse and sharp tail grouse during are probably on the top of my list to get out and photograph. You got real nice shots of the sharp tail and the video clips were smooth given the wind you were dealing with. We get short eared owls in the winter out here in the coastal marshes or interior grasslands of the northeast, but I have never seen the courtship wingclap you captured. The ones we have go up to Canada to breed but I just checked the range map and it looks like they breed in the northern parts of the west too. Thanks for taking us along again Jimmy!

Thanks so much, John! I don't know why I haven't paired these two species up in a single adventure earlier, they're both so much fun! If you ever make it out west this time of year, let me know and we'll go find some Grouse 😁 The wing clap is really fun behavior to see and hear. I tried getting audio of the sound, but the microphone had a really difficult time picking it up, so that's something I'll have to work on.

Those grouse definitely remind me of Native American dancers.

I totally agree. I definitely think there is a lot of inspiration that comes from wildlife in many aspects of those cultures. Both the birds and the people do a splendid job!

I’ve been going out in my neighborhood to this forested area with a creek, and want some tips on how to actually find different species there, I’ve gone out there early morning and late evening. Also great video 👍

Thanks so much. I've got a video that I posted a few months ago talking about how to actually find species in a landscape. There are multiple methods I use and I think those videos I've done on the topic will help. Check out my playlist about photography tips, I think it'll be worth it! Thanks so much for your support!

Hey Jimmy, great video again and great shots of the short eared owls. I do have a question about the music you are using. You've been using this specific piece in a number of videos, for a good reason I think, it is so goooood. Could you please share the details for the music you use? I think probably Epidemic. Thank you.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback and support! Yeah, the music I use is mostly from bensound. Great website, I feel like the songs there fit my videos better than most of those other music websites.
