Supposed to be more like 1/2" down when nailing and nail at a 45 degree angle so it sits flush once complete

My shakes keep breaking when I'm trying to remove them. Should I he using something like a dasco roofing bar to rip out the nails?

I would recommend getting at least 24 inches long shingle ripper to rip out the nails.
