Thank you very much for this great video! Question, how often do you recommend to clean this type of roof, and what type of chemical do you use? Thank you
Hi! Great video, thanks! I have a question… I am in the PNW and am planning to build shake awnings over my doors, can I get away with it because it’s not a whole roof and the pitch is different? Or are shake shingle just not good for anything in the PNW?
I have been searching for a video on how to repair the underlayment in a specific spot on my shake roof. the boards that cross under the underlayment are in great shape but one of them over my garage had a large knot hole in it and I stepped right on it, it broke the board at the knot hole and punctured the underlayment enough that it leaks in heavy rain and when snow sets on that spot in the winter. so far i am having zero luck. it seems obvious to me but also, sometimes things that seem obvious to me are a huge mistake waiting to happen. LOL I can get to the underneath part easy and the part on top but I am still unsure how to go about this as the board is broken and teh underlayment is pushed to the point of the tear, its about a 6 inch tear. I am still searching
Many of the installation procedures displayed in this video are incorrect and will result in premature failure of the roofing system. It should not be followed for roofing advice. For example; the felt interleaving is exposed and will degrade rapidly from UV exposure leading to leaks, the denuded fibers will also wick moisture up under the shakes and hold it there leading to rotting. Insufficient overlap of keyways will also lead to increased water penetration and leaking, in one spot of the video there are three keyways aligned meaning there is no roofing over that section of the roof at all, it is completely exposed to the elements with nothing but tar paper over it.
The asphalt roofing paper is not supposed to be exposed to the sun or the weather. You show this new shake roof with the black asphalt felt paper seen between the side gaps. . This is incorrect. This felt will deteriorate in just a few months if not by the end of the first year. At the three minute 40 second mark of the video you showed diagram which shows the correct installation of the roofing felt. Why aren’t you following this diagram ??? If you think you are knowledgeable enough to make a video then why are you showing a incorrect installation of wood shakes ??? Also the one part where you have your finger showing nails and splits caused by the nails you’re showing incorrect type of nails. Seems like you cut and pasted other videos without knowing what the hell you’re doing.

What is the best way to clean cedar shakes once they start looking very gray and forming what looks like a dirt on the tips of them?

What is the recommended “to the weather” exposure for 3’ handsplits in extreme wind locations??
@5:11 what kind of underlayment is that?
That is the cedar breather. Felt paper or ice and water Shiled is/should be under it.
You should not be able to see the felt paper between the cracks like that
Exactly
Isn’t done correctly
your felts too low its visible never should that be! thats 58 years installing shingles and shakes everyday! check the red cedar bureau!
